Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

You have identified the major problem with the "Does God Exist ?" debates -- there are at least as many unstated concepts of God as there are debaters. I strongly doubt that any consensus on a definition could be reached. Ergo, the debate is pointless. When you address the question on a personal level you are free to formulate your own definition of God. It is on that definition that the outcome of your personal decision process hinges. If you define God as some sort of entity that not only can but with some regularity does intercede in natural physical processes, then there is a great deal of objective evidence that no such God exists. In fact, the existence …

Would the world be a better place without religion? I think it would. Religion creates groups, it forms boundaries between people...that causes many problems.

According to the bible Jesus Christ was a supernatural character who could walk on water, occasionally talked to Satan, and could turn water into wine, amongst many other marvels. Can you be a scientist and still believe in this stuff? As far as I am concerned, you should not be called a scientist or be allowed anywhere near any scientific endeavour if you believe in fictitious myths. Am I being too aggressive in my attitude? Probably, however science and the scientific approach to research application is a serious technical field that should not be sullied by ridiculous fairy tales. >Please move to the Religion section..

Many accept as a matter of fact that Jesus, as described by Christianity, was a real person and it is only his divinity that is up for debate. I grew up believing as much. As an adult I realized that I have never read credible information that proved a historical Jesus. In discussions with people through the years I have found that challanging a real life historical Jesus quickly becomes battles where I am asked to prove he wasn't real person. Ultimately there seems to be a general lack of proof either way. So I ask the forum for thoughts. Is the Christian story of Jesus based on an actual living man named Jesus who live around 2,000 years ago? Here is what I find…

To the believers here who, oddly, chose to post to predominately science discussion forums, what is faith and why do you have it? Perhaps you've discussed this topic variously before and, if so, I entreat your brief indulgence further. My perusal of discussions here suggested to me that some of you do not seem to have a clear perspective of what distinguishes faith from science. Most often arguments against science are used as justification for faith; however, those arguments do not appear to define a basis for your religious faith. As I perceive, faith is a shield believers use against life's doubts, insecurities, and traumas. Some of you may view science as an atta…

To go with the flow? To congregate with a "responsible" group of people? Because of a spiritual or God experience you had? To find a "good" girl? Because you were just raised that way? Because it just makes sense, in a philosophical sort of way? Just to be on the safe side? Because it was written?

https://www.gotquestions.org/Pascals-wager.html So you may or may not believe in God. However, rationality or reason cannot take us all the way to pure belief. Disbelief may not be 100% either. does Pascal give us a reasonable way to live, with eternity in the afterlife to follow?

Can you at least have some respect to theists who have a scientific mind? I may be a Christian/Catholic, but I base scientific conclusions on scientific observations. Have some leniency here. Moderator note (swansont) I have split this off from the science's purpose is to explain God's creations thread as it ended up being a pretty sharp break from the other discussion, but was not clear exactly where the best split point was. Further, this is moved to Religion, since the basis of the discussion is not a claim consistent with Speculations

interesting but i dont think the atheist is 'betting' on anything. i think they are just being honest with themselves. I for example, dont think belief is a choice. I could try to believe ,but then i will have these constant voices nagging at me with questions like "but what about this? and what about that?". you just cant believe in something which doesn't hold up.

Vexen: I am brand new to this discussion forum. If there is a sub-forum designated for introductions, please feel free to point me in the right direction. (I briefly had a look around but found nothing obviously intended for that.) Nevertheless, I belong to the set of Religious People you were inquiring after. I am specifically a fundamentalist evangelical Christian. Since your question is one that I personally find interesting, I wanted to take a crack at it. Although the view that I will be presenting is my own religious perspective—by which I mean that it's not an official teaching of any particular Christian church, so far as I know—it is derived from and c…

in theory I think that the reason a lot of people still believe in god is that at one time we didn't understand how the world works so the easiest explanation for many of are questions is god. now that we have many answers to are questions. it is very easy to question the existence of god. The reason religious people seem sometimes not to ever consider that god is not real is that to them there is a hell. Hell is the most negative and painful thing possible. so its like bags full of water repel fly's. the myth busters have proven with experiments that bags of water do not repel fly's so we can all agree on this but lets say half of us where told since we where born that i…

Both scientific objects and God cannot exist in the external physical world. Either scientific objects exist and disproves God or God exists and disproves our notion that scientific objects exist independent of the mind. An improved religion is one that lowers the percentage of wishful thinking to allow actual knowledge to take it's place in the heirarchy of it tenents. The question is what and how to base a new religion, and preferably be one that is information based, to the degree that the information is reliable and trustworthy. If the the universe is a set of mathematical structures, or simply guided by them, then based upon where is the largest amount of information in a objective sense in our physical realm, it is the black hole at the center of this galaxy, called sagittarius A star. This should be the new focus of attention, not a local ad-hoc arrangement of historic attention g…

Discussing and examining the rational foundations of Religion. One can see that the early word of mouth or assorted testimonials were very moving for people. The book of "Acts" is the book of the actual work of spreading a Formed Religion to other Nations, peoples, and races besides the Chosen People. In 300 AD the Byzantines put together for the first time what we know as the Books of a standard Bible most used today. Many commonalities between the Hellenist religion of Europe and the religion of Christ can be seen. The Greek god of the underworld hades is defeated and the souls of the dead are released to heaven. The Trinity and Chalcedonian Creed controversies, they re…

Hi: Most people know that Hindus believe that we might come back as lower life forms - bugs, animals I want to correct some misconceptions on this issue First, these ideas were not limited to Hindus alone - we don't do that - We are ALL God's Children and His/Her rules apply equally to ALL of us Second, most religions view God as a Master - reward(Heaven) & punishment(Hell) is how he operates. Hindus view God as a Parent/Teacher - a Parent/Teacher instructs, Teaches but does not punish So, being reborn as a Dog or a cat is not a punishment but a Choice that we made of our own free will Thru Life God has taught us that we get to stay in the nes…

Jesus said, 'I am the truth, the light and the way.' I think God is a part of the old Jewish religion, and does not apply. Jesus never said he was the son of God - others said that about him. Jesus called himself 'The Son of Man,' just to let us know. His prayer, The Our Father that he taught us, is not a prayer to God, but to Our Heavenly Father. There was a time when everybody in the world turned against God. This is in the bible, I'm not making it up. That's right, everybody in the world turned against God - except for one man, Noah. Now you remember. I thought you would. Anyway, God killed eveybody in the world except for Noah (and his family.) Then, ever…

What does everyone make of this? It is a little misleading to the public. Why do you think the cross neclace is such a popular accessory today amongst our non-religious youth? Would you ever wear one if you were not Christian/Catholic?

i was bought up a christian. went my own way in my early 20's. now i am completely neutral simply cause 'the jurys still out'. i tend to lean towards science because i like the thought of something that can be proven rather than just believed. for me, logic overrules feelings. something i sometimes wonder. for me to turn from a strong believer to on the fence, all i had to do was simply read the other side of the story. hear both arguments. why doesnt that work for everyone? sometimes i find things like this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1211511/Why-born-believe-God-Its-wired-brain-says-psychologist.html https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-peo…
