Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

You have identified the major problem with the "Does God Exist ?" debates -- there are at least as many unstated concepts of God as there are debaters. I strongly doubt that any consensus on a definition could be reached. Ergo, the debate is pointless. When you address the question on a personal level you are free to formulate your own definition of God. It is on that definition that the outcome of your personal decision process hinges. If you define God as some sort of entity that not only can but with some regularity does intercede in natural physical processes, then there is a great deal of objective evidence that no such God exists. In fact, the existence …

  3. Would the world be a better place without religion? I think it would. Religion creates groups, it forms boundaries between people...that causes many problems.

To the believers here who, oddly, chose to post to predominately science discussion forums, what is faith and why do you have it? Perhaps you've discussed this topic variously before and, if so, I entreat your brief indulgence further. My perusal of discussions here suggested to me that some of you do not seem to have a clear perspective of what distinguishes faith from science. Most often arguments against science are used as justification for faith; however, those arguments do not appear to define a basis for your religious faith. As I perceive, faith is a shield believers use against life's doubts, insecurities, and traumas. Some of you may view science as an atta…

Many accept as a matter of fact that Jesus, as described by Christianity, was a real person and it is only his divinity that is up for debate. I grew up believing as much. As an adult I realized that I have never read credible information that proved a historical Jesus. In discussions with people through the years I have found that challanging a real life historical Jesus quickly becomes battles where I am asked to prove he wasn't real person. Ultimately there seems to be a general lack of proof either way. So I ask the forum for thoughts. Is the Christian story of Jesus based on an actual living man named Jesus who live around 2,000 years ago? Here is what I find…

  6. To go with the flow? To congregate with a "responsible" group of people? Because of a spiritual or God experience you had? To find a "good" girl? Because you were just raised that way? Because it just makes sense, in a philosophical sort of way? Just to be on the safe side? Because it was written?

Can you at least have some respect to theists who have a scientific mind? I may be a Christian/Catholic, but I base scientific conclusions on scientific observations. Have some leniency here. Moderator note (swansont) I have split this off from the science's purpose is to explain God's creations thread as it ended up being a pretty sharp break from the other discussion, but was not clear exactly where the best split point was. Further, this is moved to Religion, since the basis of the discussion is not a claim consistent with Speculations

  10. According to the bible Jesus Christ was a supernatural character who could walk on water, occasionally talked to Satan, and could turn water into wine, amongst many other marvels. Can you be a scientist and still believe in this stuff? As far as I am concerned, you should not be called a scientist or be allowed anywhere near any scientific endeavour if you believe in fictitious myths. Am I being too aggressive in my attitude? Probably, however science and the scientific approach to research application is a serious technical field that should not be sullied by ridiculous fairy tales. >Please move to the Religion section..

  11. Was there a REAL person, at the heart of the Christian religion? Of course, if you're a Christian, you will answer yes. But most atheists (like me) would probably say yes as well. There is so much detail written, that you would think that there probably was a real person, around who the tales were woven. That's been my position for years. I have heard of claims by some people that there never was a historical Jesus, but always thought that they were a bit like conspiracy theorists, bending reality to match their obsessive belief. On a whim, I thought I'd have a look at the evidence for a historical Jesus, at the root of it all. And I was amazed. At the lack of it…

  14. Both scientific objects and God cannot exist in the external physical world. Either scientific objects exist and disproves God or God exists and disproves our notion that scientific objects exist independent of the mind. in theory I think that the reason a lot of people still believe in god is that at one time we didn't understand how the world works so the easiest explanation for many of are questions is god. now that we have many answers to are questions. it is very easy to question the existence of god. The reason religious people seem sometimes not to ever consider that god is not real is that to them there is a hell. Hell is the most negative and painful thing possible. so its like bags full of water repel fly's. the myth busters have proven with experiments that bags of water do not repel fly's so we can all agree on this but lets say half of us where told since we where born that i…

  17. According to the Copenhagen interpretation a quantum system remains in superposition until it is observed. If God was omnipotent he would be all knowing, implying that he observes all. However since the cat's state remains in superposition we can infer that it has not been observed, and therefore God is has no knowledge of the cat's state. That contradicts the initial assumption that God is omnipotent, but if God is not Omnipotent then he is not God at all, and therefore God does not exist.

Can science prove God or afterlife? Is there any evidence for that? I'm not asking about an evidence that proves 100% these ,i know it's impossible ,i'm asking that kind of proofs that increases the chances of a God to exist . If not ,then science disproves God?

  19. No offense, but I have always been against religion. I know most of the bible and some of it is just plain horrible. I'm going to give you a few of these quotes; Psalms 137:9, 1 Kings 20:35-36, Genesis 19:5-8, Deuteronomy 22:28-29, and Numbers 15:32-36. I got more than that and if you don't believe me read them for yourself. I was always told as a kid that "the universe can't come from nothing" and this proves God exists. It wasn't until I watched a science video until I learned the truth. The basic idea is that the universe started at a heated and condensed state. Energy (not nothing) had transferred into particles of matter. These particles later combined because of…

i was bought up a christian. went my own way in my early 20's. now i am completely neutral simply cause 'the jurys still out'. i tend to lean towards science because i like the thought of something that can be proven rather than just believed. for me, logic overrules feelings. something i sometimes wonder. for me to turn from a strong believer to on the fence, all i had to do was simply read the other side of the story. hear both arguments. why doesnt that work for everyone? sometimes i find things like this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1211511/Why-born-believe-God-Its-wired-brain-says-psychologist.html https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-peo…

  21. Honestly, beheading infidels shouting the name "Allah O Akbar" and releasing videos of that over the internet to threaten all the pagans and infidels falls under the definition of religion according to you? I asked where does religion stop women from taking up higher university education and not what some people do in the name of religion, the latter doesn't fall with in the definition of religion.

Mark 13:25 King James Bible And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. Question... How Can The Stars Fall From The Sky? 2000 years ago they didnt know what the stars were.. They looked up and saw specs of light in the night sky.. Didnt know they were huge balls of fire billions and trillions of miles away. The Scripture is Literal, It means those specs of light, Not comets or metors, but the specs of light they called stars.. If one single scripture has been disproved it undermines the whole bible and the belief system. How can God be wrong?

  23. The need for some sort of legal definition of when life begins is necessary when considering abortion, but that's more of a political discussion. I'd like to know if your religious (or simply moral) views allow for abortion at any time after conception. When does life begin according to your beliefs and can that ever be reconciled with the laws that need to exist to allow for abortion? And if your spiritual answer is, "Life begins at conception," then how can we deal with that legally when, under that definition, any miscarriage of a pregnancy might potentially be investigated as a murder?
