I'm watching s12e1 of Curb Your Enthusiasm and there's a moment where Larry says to Leon, have you noticed that when you take a picture you don't look nearly as good as you do when you look in the mirror? Because the mirror is how you look to yourself and the photo is how others see you. This is exactly what I've also noticed and hearing LD say that on the show made me realize that this is apparently a universal phenomenon? Have you noticed this as well? I've always been struck by how much more attractive I look to myself in the mirror vs. how I appear in pictures, especially if the picture was taken by someone else and my feeling has always been the one Larry e…

For some reason what appears to be a world wide prank of some sort is being reported on. A monolith was found in Utah and now what are though tto be copies have been found around the world from eastern europe to columbia 4 or five have been found. If it's a prank it must be rather expensive to place stainless steel monoliths around the globe. Anyone have any ideas or new reports? My fave take!

"Daylight saving time was first introduced in the United States in 1918 under the Standard Time Act as a measure to save on fuel costs during the First World War by adding an extra hour of sunlight to the day.... "In 2005, Congress amended the Uniform Time Act to expand daylight saving time to the period in effect today: Starting on the second Sunday of March and ending on the first Sunday of November, according to the Congressional Research Service. This move was again for energy saving purposes. "A Department of Energy study following the amendment’s implementation found the extra four weeks of daylight saving time saved around 0.5% in total electricity daily in t…

First part here: Now for the second part, since it's allegedly "non-interesting." I do find it "interesting" how Sam is going to a foundry now, complete with a Government wig who's tagging along: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/events/ifs-direct-connect.html Now think about this for half a minute. He's not even building anything ground up- There's been zero indications of that. Every indication he's given so far points to "ready made" sources (see above post), either buying hardware outright (the GPU kits he tweeted about) or going to a foundry to procure silicon. It would be doubly puzzling/"interesting" why that he's asking $7 TRILL…

Ants are extremely strong for their size. Apparently ants can lift over 1000 times their body weight. As such, Im wondering how ants would be on planets with really high gravity, much higher gravity on earth. They would probably do just fine I would think.

For a long time, I'd like to get a smartphone with a large screen but I haven't yet got one because there are some trade-offs, e.g. weight and convenience. If I don't watch videos or play mobile games, I just use my phone to read ebook and information on the web (mainly text and pictures), will it feel a lot better by using a bigger screen? What's your opinion?

I know there is something like adhesive tape but it will not leave marks and is designed not to leave marks on paper. Ordinary tape is highly adhesive and could easily damage prints on paper if not removed carefully. What is the name of such thing?

Some told me that sneakers shouldn't require any delicate cleaning because it is supposed to get dirty, inside and outside, washing with water may even wear it faster. Some said that with proper methods of cleaning which usually involves regular use of professional or special cleansers, life of sneakers will be largely extended. In fact, I think any shoe should be cleaned but I don't think that it is good to throw them into washing machines, at least, I have not and I will not risk doing this. Generally speaking, how to clean sneakers and how often should I clean them?

Twenty one years ago today the space shuttle Columbia burned up upon reentry of the Earth's atmosphere due to failure of the heat shield because of damage to a wing from foam breaking loose during launch. All seven astronauts on board were tragically killed. RIP Columbia Crew.

"Britain’s media has reacted with fury and bewilderment after a US scientist claimed the perfect cup of tea is made with a pinch of added salt" https://edition.cnn.com/2024/01/24/travel/britain-us-scientist-tea-debate-intl/index.html Apparently a soupçon of salt takes away the supposed bitterness of the drink of tea. I can't see that catching on but then I myself drink very ,very weak green tea (obviously no milk -also no sugar) I was never aware that bitterness was a problem with ordinary black tea but perhaps there is to some.

One of my New Years resolutions is to stop trying to enhance RSA. Where is there a list of copyrighted content that is now public? The first Mickey Mouse movie now is public domain. Also, I thought that all my data analysis on crypto would benefit me in bioinformatics. Even though I am not a biology major or know much about, I thought I could still work with the statistics. Is there any online database of open source data to try and crunch and find patterns in genetics?

I realize I have a bad reputation on this site, and I can see why. I believe everyone deserves a fresh start and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Grayson, and I got on this forum to share my love of science. My favorite field of science right now is physics because I believe it explains the most about the universe around us. My favorite musical band is the Beatles. I like them because they give off a surreal feeling. My favorite song by them is in my life in the rubber soul album. Off of music, I like learning and shoving knowledge into my brain. I also like books in the non-fiction section about science. Now, I would like to dedicate this page to anyone who w…

What are your (favourite) recipes for cooking ham ? My family had used the following for generations and most folks we feed the result to seem to think offers significant improvement of the standard method. Use smoked or plain ham to preference. First prepare you ham by making small slits in opposite sides or ends with a very sharp knife. Then insert a sliver of fresh garlic clove into each slit, as deeply as practicable. Follow this up by inserting one or two cloves into each slit, tailend inwards. These are removed after cooking. Place the treated ham in a pot deep enough to cover with cold water and place on stove. Add a rounded desert…

Hi. Have a biggish hydraulic jack with no markings. Looks like the image below. Its pumping rod diameter is 12mm, its piston is 55.5mm I do not know what is the typical operation pressure of these things, or the typical force-length-leverage applied to the lever that plunges its pumping rod. How do I calculate its rating ?
