What interesting fact or trivia did you learn today? For example, today I learned that a shamrock and four-leaf clover are not the same. It seems that shamrock describes a three-leaf clover and, as folklore has it, was used by St.Patrick as a religious totem. The four-leaf clover, which is not associated with St.Patrick, owes it's reputation for luck to its rarity. So, do you have something interesting to share?

I want to invite anyone in the Baltimore, MD area to come visit us for one of our weekly meetups. We get together to work on all things related to science and technology. We mostly focus on the technology portion right now but I would like to get more people who are interested in science to start hanging out with us as well. Visit http://baltimorehackerspace.com for more information. FYI, this is not some lame group of guys. We have mathematicians, robotic engineers, bio engineers, and more all hanging out together sharing ideas and working on projects. Together we can accomplish anything.

Welcome to SFN! In order to help people who are unfamiliar with internet forums, I have put together a small tutorial to expedite the development of the posting abilities of the forum as a whole especially the new members. SFN is a great place to talk about various subjects with an amazing community. We have a forum for just about anything related to science and we even have a forum to talk about non-science related things. Most of the forums are open to all users. However, some forums do have restrictions in order to minimize issues inherent in boards with such forums. Politics, Philosophy, Ethics, and Religion are all restricted to posters with a minimum of 30 pos…

It is essential to ensure that ingredients are well mixed when bread making. I normally use 3 types of flour, sometimes more. How do you ensure a good mix ? I use a riffle spoon for the dry ingredients (including yeast), see the photo in the mixer bowl, before adding the liquid ingredients.

Paul Neil Milne Johnstone (1952–2004) was a real poet who lived in Redbridge, Essex. Johnstone had attended Brentwood School with Douglas Adams. There Johnstone edited a broadsheet, "the Artsphere Magazine," that included mock reviews by Adams as well as Johnstone's own poetry. His name was used by Adams as the author of the worst poetry in the universe in the original radio broadcast, and first edition of HGttG, though this was changed to Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings for all subsequent versions. Johnstone went on to achieve moderate prominence in the poetry world as an editor and festival organiser, including the 1977 Cambridge Poetry Festival. So here's a thread for b…

Last week I had a blob of chapati dough start to ferment on me, so I grasped the opportunity to try my hand at making sourdough bread roughly in accordance with: Good FoodWhite sourdoughMaster the art of how to make sourdough bread with our step-by-step recipe. Learn how to create a starter, levain and the loaf itself with our expert tips.I've just sampled my second loaf (bit of crust lightly spread with bacon drip) and can definitely declare it to be edible. Few questions: The recipe I'm using seems to involve an awful lot of faffing about. Is this all absolutely necessary? I've already upped the baking time from 35 to 45 minutes (at gas mark Nigeria). The crust isn't bu…

Good day. Since day one, I learned this was named gimbal : file:///home/externet/Pictures/Gimbal.png Unable to insert image 😡, can be seen at --> https://lanternnet.com/product/wp-solid-brass-gimbal-for-large-yacht-lamp/ Trying to look for a manufacturer/vendor, only get crap results for cameras. Any special term I should use instead in a search ? Do you know a provider for large ~30cm ones? Has its name changed ? Plastic would be fine.

(AP) - The president, following a 158th viewing of the 2013 film "Gravity," was briefly distracted from his usual routine of contemplating (and commenting on to staff) the firmness of Sandra Bullock's derriere by the scene which depicts the onset of a destructive ablation cascade. While it's unclear what drew the president's attention on this particular viewing, it became quickly apparent to the NASA officials and space tech billionaires who were summoned to an emergency meeting that he has now realized the genuine threat which Kessler Syndrome https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndrome poses to America's future in space. Consulting with a team of experts which inc…

Please do not put this in trash can or speculation please. I am trying to prove myself right. ask me any question or problem in existance and I will solve it. Riddle “I’m a bird of gay plumage, yet less like a bird, nothing ever in nature was seen.” “Touch the earth I expire, in water I die, in air I lose breath, yet can swim and can fly.” “Darkness destroys me, and light is my death, and I only keep going by holding my breath.” “If my name can’t be guessed by a boy or a man, by a woman or girl it certainly can.” -> Theory of Everything (Gaiven Model of Reality) -> Solution: 1. Name: Chrysalis 2. Description (Based on the Clues): “I’m a bird of gay plumage, yet less…

Hi. Stumbled upon and unsure of its meaning. What does the word 'constitution' here refers to ? 🤨 And; any majority has to start with one or few use events; does it mean that it is a wrong word until half +1 use such and then becomes right ?

What do you hoard in the fridge or back of the pantry ready for when you have an attack of the munchies? I've a few. Mainly defensible, but I've recently rediscovered my weakness for Flapjacks. The only non-Brit here who might really know what these are is @Ken Fabian as treacle (aka Golden Syrup) is an indispensable ingredient and there few places outside the UK where it's readily available. I have to make my own (but it's worth it). What's your guilty secret? (No more than 2 minutes prep time at time of need, or it's just 2nd breakfast)

I have a very simple idea, good at least for sci-fi novels. Currently there is a battle in the world between autocracies and Western democracies. According to MWI, some time later there will be two universes - in the first the dictators will finally win, in the second the democracies will win. But in the first universe, maybe in 22nd century, the humanity will perish in a big nuclear war; and in more prosperous second universe, in far future (maybe 2500 AD), humanity will establish the Time Patrol. The Patrol will affect the past via Mermin-Peres game (quantum pseudo-telepathy), and it will reduce the amplitude of the state |Dictators_win>. This means for us, that the …

The national lottery is currently running an ad campaign (It could be you), trying to persuade us to buy a lottery ticket. It got me wondering if the odds were 'significantly' different, if I don't buy a ticket? It's math above my pay grade, so feel free to work out the number's for me. 🙂
