I hope this is the right place to post this, but where is imatfaal? I always enjoyed her comments. I wanted to get her opinion. I don't know her. She could be anyone, as this is an Internet forum. But I was wondering why she hasn't returned.

  2. When folks come to speculate, they often receive quick replies from members pointing out obvious flaws, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings. No foul there, this is a very informal peer review, and we should expect anyone coming here to want such critique. Unfortunately, picking at this low-hanging fruit almost always gives the impression that an idea is being rejected "out-of-hand", wildly or thoughtlessly or as a knee-jerk reaction. I wanted to create a thread here in Comments to discuss how to better deal with this problem in our conversations, and hopefully the next time someone brings it up, we can point them here instead of rehashing it every time. Just as…

This is a science forum. I go to check what goes on in Computer Science, and it will say "Computer Help". Like what is that supposed to mean: there is discussion on how to write programs, or how to repair a desktop? Judging from the titles of contributions, that is actually pretty much it. No trace of science here. I am not a computer scientist, but I do happen to know what Computer Science is, in real life. namely CS is a mathematical theory which deals with measuring the theoretical efficiency of computation. For example, the prominent open questions are problems like NP=P? and whether natural numbers can be factorized in polynomial time. But there are many more le…

  4. Started by wtf,

There's an instruction in a thread called "All about quotes" or something like that, saying to click an icon that supposedly appears right about the B in the markup row, but that icon doesn't seem to be there anymore. Is there a way to edit at the BBCode level?

Wasn't there a wacky post last night about NASA finding fossils on Mars "again"? Supposedly reported in the National Geo. Just wondering ,was it deleted or maybe did I see it somewhere else? I thought Mr dimreepr posted in reply to the effect that it was bs.

  8. Started by Strange,

On some forums, banned or (temporarily) suspended users get identified by their usernames being in a different colour, being struck through or their "title" ("Lepton" etc) being changed (e.g. to "suspended" or "banned"). On the old version of the forum software here, the username was visible but was no longer a link to the user and their posts. (Which was annoying because it made it hard to find old posts - to identify a sock-puppet, for example). Now we have nothing telling us that a user is banned (unless you follow the banned users thread, or a mod posts in the thread(s) they were posting in) so people may keep trying to discuss something with someone who is …

  10. I came across this jus now, I have no idea if this is relevant in any way (either than DrP's evolution state) or if it's on the server side or on my side but I might as well share. @DrP's status is "Molecule" in the main thread view but it shows "Beacon of Hope" in his profile view:

  12. Started by Manas,

We know when we make photo copy of a doc or use printer to print, the unique ID of the machine gets printed that is invisible to naked eye. So can we use similar technology in the screen shots or video taken by mobile phones? Now-a-days most of us have mobile phones and most of us use them in negative purposes. For ex: exam paper leaking, private moments spent with a gal etc. And then our wicked brain makes them viral. But if such technology could be implemented so that when a video is taken or a snap is taken then the source Mobile IMEI or mobile no would be automatically stamped and when sent to others that number too would also be passed. And hence the outcome …

  14. I have CFU counts over 10 days. What is the best way to present colony forming units in a scientific paper? I don't think a table would be the best method. Maybe a bar graph? I have 10^-4, 10^-5, 10^-6, and 10^-7 plate counts. I have 20 different samples for each dilution. Please comment with some scientific papers or examples! Thank you

Before when I clicked on the upvote, the number incread by 1 so a post that had no votes yet would change from displaying nothing at all to 1. Today I noticed that the click produces a number 0. If I leave the thread and return 1 is then showing? Also what is the point of/difference between 'likes' and 'upvoting', it's all to easy to get the wrong one if there is a difference.

At ----> https://www.scienceforums.net/search/ At "Search by author" entering a valid username and hitting "Search content" at bottom shows no results, and a message asking for a term. Is that wrong or am doing something wrong ? Or; How to search for all contents of a member in a single forum ?

Apparently, i was going to give myself a profile picture when it said: "You are not allowed to edit this profile". Did I break a rule (This is my first time posting here) or do I need to wait?

Earlier today I responded to a thread about differential equations in homework. But it seems to have disappeared. Can anyone say what happened to it please?

  19. This problem started after the last server repairs. If I recall it was on the New years when the hard drives were being serviced. Since that time my mobile phone has not been able to connect using data however reliably connects using my home wifi. The message I recieve is "connection refused." I tried both full and mobile version from my phone same message.

I just posted a topic in Earth Science. But the software here replaced the title with one from many weeks ago. It left the body of the text unchanged.

Is this site's software equipped for curtailing the length of posts in threads? Would it be a good idea to have a subforum where we would be guaranteed that posts and responses would be short and to the point? I accept my own intellectual limitations are not shared by all and that detailed posts are valuable and necessary but could there be an advantage to also providing for exchanges where just one point (of maybe two) at a time would be expressed?
