Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

  1. So all things die, thats a given. There are also people who believe in a god, which is ok. But if there is a higher being we call god, then what's the point of death? Death stops humans from thinking, learning, sharing that knowledge, and possibly sharing their belief in god. There is the point of a afterlife, but why need a afterlife if you just don't die in the first place? Some would say that the afterlife is there to get closer to god, but then why doesn't god just communicate with humans in the physical plane. Whereabout science teaches that currently death is just there, and hopefully we can overcome death someday. Believers and non-believers alike can reply with yo…

It should be obvious to everyone that Trump's mannerisms are UNchristlike. He never follows Christ as an example for his behavior. His mannerisms look like he studied Mussolini carefully, and fancies himself a pro wrestler, since he is in the WWE Hall of Fame. So Trump is substantially the most prominent unchristlike person we know of today. That makes him THE antichrist, for our current times. With recent developments in the Coronavirus Crisis, it shows Trump and his supporters suggesting older Americans go back to work to boost the economy and it's ok for them to die IF IT HELPS THE ECONOMY, and therefore Trump's chances for reelection. I did some research on …

  3. It's incredible what's happening in Italy!! The previous government stopped immigration. A political rebellion created a new government(two monthes before covid-19 beginning) and reopened immigration. But now they stopped immigration because of covid-19!! (It seems a real miracle!!!) Is God against muslim immigration in Europe? Is God against Bergoglio(the Pope) who prayed for immigration?

This may be a unusual way to start a forum but i believe it is very necessary. So if i may appeal to your senses of rationality and intelligence i am starting this forum with a brief description of my experiences. In the year 2013 i started hearing voices as i am able to describe it to the only correlation that you the reader may understand. It was not in the sense that it was in my head at all but sounded always off in the distance like it was coming from beyond the other side of a building. I went through strange and unusual dialogue with the voices that even to this day i do not understand. Voices was not the only thing i was experiencing at this length of time i…

One of the things I admired about Witnesses is that they did their homework. When I was a believer I enjoyed the conversation but knew better than to seriously accept a challenge because, well, they do their homework. I have noticed what looks like research being done here in the religious section. Note - They also do their research. If you want to engage someone in the field in conversation you need to know how to respond in such a way that they will remain in conversation. If you have ever read their literature you might notice the similarities in how some of the questions are presented. I was never a witness and for them that became a problem. I had my own reasons for …

This section speaks of the rational foundations of religion. But there are no rational foundations of religion. It is all BS! About 20 years ago I wrote a book on this very topic. It is called "Our Holy Hell: The Causes, The Solutions." Though it deals mainly with the judaic-christian religion. If you want to read it, just google the title. You will find it. But just to let you know what you will be in for, I will tell you what the first four chapters are. 1. Stupidity and lies of the old testament. 2. Evil of the old testament. 3. Stupidity and lies of the new testament. 4. Evil of the new testament.

IN CONSIDERATION OF ATHEISM Being unable to negate the subjective experiences of my spiritual quest, I find it impossible to rise to any higher conclusion than the following, from my perspective, it’s fifty fifty. It may well be that God, if he/she/it exists, when making a plan for man, decided all that could be known was an understanding that God-ness has a chance of being. If there is a God who uses planning above our understanding, he allowed us the freedom to develop logical conclusions based on our ability to reason. Reason demands both sides of any argument must be considered and argued equally, especially…

Iv been reading Thoth and Enoch a lot and what I have noticed is that his creation story sounds like the basis to most religions and I know ppl say Egypt’s gods are Thoths religious views but it all seems like his teachings were corrupted by Egypt priests bcuz egypt was ‘We’re more of a 1 god view’not the many gods of Egypt. It seems like that his students were revered as gods and took advantage of this to rule and the idea of all Egypt gods were born out of this corruption

  12. https://www.gotquestions.org/Pascals-wager.html So you may or may not believe in God. However, rationality or reason cannot take us all the way to pure belief. Disbelief may not be 100% either. does Pascal give us a reasonable way to live, with eternity in the afterlife to follow?

  13. Just a second ago this novelty of a thought suddenly struck me. I was thinking that, in the history of atheism, this posture of disbelief exploded exponentially in the latter half of the 20th century in free countries such a the U.S.A. and Scandinavia. Freedom of religion has existed in the U.S.A. since the 1700s, so why hadnt atheism taken off much sooner? What fundamental change in how people lived or how they thought brought this explosion in atheism on?

Think for a minute. Don’t think religion or science. Think belief. There is a difference between belief and religion. Do you believe there are other worlds? Not just in space planets but other dimensions such as string theory. Now you must decide if these worlds automatically exist or they were created. If the worlds were created, you must decide if the creator actually cares about the human race. If you do believe in a God that cares, you must decide if those teaching about him actually represent him. If you believe God doesn’t exist, you must question the meaning of life. I t…

  15. interesting but i dont think the atheist is 'betting' on anything. i think they are just being honest with themselves. I for example, dont think belief is a choice. I could try to believe ,but then i will have these constant voices nagging at me with questions like "but what about this? and what about that?". you just cant believe in something which doesn't hold up.

  16. Vexen: I am brand new to this discussion forum. If there is a sub-forum designated for introductions, please feel free to point me in the right direction. (I briefly had a look around but found nothing obviously intended for that.) Nevertheless, I belong to the set of Religious People you were inquiring after. I am specifically a fundamentalist evangelical Christian. Since your question is one that I personally find interesting, I wanted to take a crack at it. Although the view that I will be presenting is my own religious perspective—by which I mean that it's not an official teaching of any particular Christian church, so far as I know—it is derived from and c…

My true motive is to talk to somebody. I have no one else to talk to. I'm on a month suspension for calling an atheist on Facebook... woo, twice!!! He claimed I was personally attacking him! Well, anyway, I just came back from ... with the word Yahawa, ancient Hebrew name of God. I looked it up on the internet and found this link. https://yahawah-is.blogspot.com/ I'm not trying preach to anyone and I'm not trying to threaten anyone or make you feel uncomfortable. I have argued scientifically that a Creator is required to create the physical laws of this universe. The fact that I hear the name Yahawah, one can infer that the Ancient Hebrew God Yahawah created…

God showed me that the universe we see is only a wavelength of energy that seems solid because we are on the same wavelength. But when God tunes his own wavelength up or down our own dimensions either shrink to zero or expand infinitely. This gives God the ability to shrink the universe to zero & travel to worlds light years away in only a few moments. God demonstrated this to me over & over & let me hold the elements he uses that change the wavelength of atoms that come near them. He built gates from the elements & when we pass through the gates we expand a hundred times or more & enter a parallel earth; & at other times we passed through gates wh…

  19. In the bible Genesis chapter 3:16 we learn that man was to rule over woman, this really haunts me to this day since elections, could this be the reason Hillary lose??.i try asking people this but i end up sounding weird,i knew right before elections Trump would win because it couldn't make sense a woman winning and rule the world, because that would mean something totally opposite from the Bible...am i going crazy? Does anyone understand what am trying to point out? I got the feeling some people wondering whats up with me but is there anyone out there seeing some light in my point? Help me understand where am wrong Let me know your thoughts, thank you.

Worshipping God's seems irrational. So why have people worshipped God's for thousands of years? With all the evidence that shows that human beings have done just that, and the evidence is there. Is it rational to ignore a need that humans seem to be hardwired with just because the proof is lacking? We can demand proof, but with thousands of years belief as evidence can we rationaly say that humanity does not need to believe. Leasing to do you think it is wrong for me to say that must humans need God or God's? With all the many God's worshipped over thousands of years the only thing that seems irrational is the instance that there is only one God, which has become to …

To the believers here who, oddly, chose to post to predominately science discussion forums, what is faith and why do you have it? Perhaps you've discussed this topic variously before and, if so, I entreat your brief indulgence further. My perusal of discussions here suggested to me that some of you do not seem to have a clear perspective of what distinguishes faith from science. Most often arguments against science are used as justification for faith; however, those arguments do not appear to define a basis for your religious faith. As I perceive, faith is a shield believers use against life's doubts, insecurities, and traumas. Some of you may view science as an atta…
