Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

As usual I'm trying to "figure out" obscure subjects. I stumbled upon a Qanon believer when I was listening to music on Youtube. It is a nice version of Bob Marley's song "Babylon System." If you want to listen to it, I posted the song at the end of this post. In the song Bob Marley sings: Babylon system is the vampire, yea! Suckin' the children day by day, yeah! Me say de Babylon system is the vampire, falling empire, Suckin' the blood of the sufferers, yeah! Building church and university, wooh, yeah! Deceiving the people continually, yeah! Me say them graduatin' thieves and murderers Look out now they suckin' the blood of the sufferers A couple of …

Yes and no apparently. This isn't news or a question, I wasn't sure what to do with it so I stuck it here. Hot water freezing faster than cold water is a 'fact' I've heard several times now. Searched for an answer and found this. Found it an interesting read, Thought I'd post it. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-it-true-that-hot-water/

Itseems to me that Science is a bit of a pyramid scheme, with too many people doing PhDs and higher stages to progress far up the academic career ladder. What successful careers have people had after half a career as an academic?

This short video details the idea of a nuclear saltwater rocket. This rocket is pretty much a continuous nuclear explosion propelling the space craft. The vid is short and informative not to mention wild! Should development of such an engine be pursued?

Is there such thing as a paint that looks like a glossy metal (like stainless steel or nickel-plated steel). For example, a cheaper sink tap might have a plastic handle, but 'painted' to look like metal - is this a paint or what? Is it something that I can simply buy in a store (I have no experience... maybe it is just that easy)? I need to make some ordinary carbon steel parts look shiny. I am thinking about nickel-electroplating but it seems a bit expensive where I am (and I am also afraid that there are different steel grades welded together in these parts and I am not sure if this can cause problems when electroplating). So, do I have a paint or some other option…

I want to buy a good chair as I spend most of the day sitting for work and had some pain in my arm because my current chair is just a wooden one from the kitchen. I have no idea what is a good chair to buy and there is so many brands I have never even heard of. The local furniture store has one that looks like this for 160. One person I know has a secret labs chair and he says it is very comfortable but they are very pricey so am not sure about it. Work uses IKEA chairs but am not sure whether I would be more comfortable in something that wasn't mesh. https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/p/jaervfjaellet-office-chair-gunnared-dark-grey-80363596/

Suppose we wanted to leave a message to another civilization in the event that our's came to a bad end and so we could inform others of our failure (or our successes) ,how could we be sure that our message would be understood if it was ever come upon and read? Would we need to invent some kind of a universal language that we could be confident that any (or at least many/ most ) advanced civilizations would be able to decipher? What basic principles could be employed to ensure that the "reader" would firstly understand that our message was worth the effort to understand and then that it could be understood? Has this subject been already explo…

I have used the word guns to make it easier But even bigger bullet weapons are included. 1. Camera helmet Has anybody ever thought of putting a camera on a military helmet. So it can enable the soldier on the battlefield,to see through the camera not through the camera not through the expensive gargles. it should be remembered that a device like a smartphone will be required for the camera to send that view on its screen so the soldier wearing the smart helmet. This would enable soldiers protect their eye sight with metal.which would be cheaper) Because the whole helmet would be made of metal. No expensive gargles needed this time It s…

For whatever reason, a question that has been in my mind for many years, "what ever happened to Laika?", popped up again yesterday. Maybe it's because I tend to feel sad in Christmas. It's a recurring theme for me. Christmas seem to be all about loss. And I'm a Cold-War kid. In recent years I've learnt from paleo-anthropologists that we probably owe much of what we are to the presence of dogs in our lives, that goes back tens --if not hundreds-- of thousands of years at the very least. https://phys.org/news/2019-02-prehistoric-humans-dogs-death.html We owe them so much. Anyway, I found this story answering all my questions. It's not a happy story, I must wa…

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18810658/ So I've ruffled some feathers here saying such things as, "natural discovery is of an order higher than science," notwithstanding that I've also said, "science is one very useful way of looking at nature." I've been working at home with my own ferments, as a way to preserve and enhance foods. My methods are based on Biblical clues, and clues from Katrina Blair's, Wild Wisdom of Weeds. I've accidentally developed skills manufacturing kombucha and kefir, carbonated kefir. So in the abstract above, the paper isolates a bacteria from kombucha rather than studying the kombucha, and the kefir directly. This is why …

Some of the residents on sites like these have been interacting with the same people for over 10 years, sometimes across multiple sites. I was wondering, Do you ever keep in touch with anyone away from the site? Also, what's it like when someone you regularly interact with for a number of years stops showing up, do you ever feel like you've lost a friend. Sorry for being personal, tell me to f^*k off if you want, I'm just curious.

He's not been around in awhile, very strange. Does anyone know if his/their absence is permanent? Something i've noticed on several different forums now, is that when a new expert arrives and seems to stick around, one of the resident experts disappears. I was wondering, as these forums are kind of smallish, do staff/mods feel morally obligated to stick around longer than they want too until a replacement shows up, so not to harm the site?

Some children are better readers for one reason. Teach them: Twinkle twinkle little star equals The ABCs. It's the same tune precisely. Here's another: Leaning on the Everlasting Arms equals The Bear Necessities. https://youtu.be/WJizAYb7OAk

Who do I contact about consumer complaints in the UK. Samsung recently offered a free phone with my purchase but are refusing to give me the phone even though the terms and conditions said it was ok to order from Ireland and their staff reiterated that to me after purchasing the product they changed their tune to haha you aren't in the UK.

Let's say you woke this morning and found a space shback yard. For the sake of argument (all you Star Trek fans know what i am, talking about) it's the Delta Flyer. The door is open and when you walk in it tells you it will take you anywhere you want. Where would you go first?

Hopefully this post is appropriate for this location and forum. I'm debating quitting a lab tech position for a scientist position at a new company. They want to put me on a probationary period for 6 months, and I guess I'm ok with that, but it makes me wonder: Is it common to hire people to help establish a lab, only to let them go when they are through getting it established (procedures, etc.)? I'm just nervous quitting an established lab job for one just starting. I'm still new to science obviously, just wanted an opinion from people with relevant experience. My field is molecular biology if that matters.

It kind of reminds me of bodybuilding forums, the losing fat section, people come in with ideas of fat loss and how they think things are when it comes to weight loss. People usually are told to read the stickies or to simply go on a calorie deficit diet, all diets work by making you eat less than the amount of calories you burn. So with here people come in with ideas of science and how it works but people are usually told how to do stuff properly with common science methods etc... maybe that is one reason why these forums isn't as popular as other because people can't express their ideas without being corrected. Edit: Also, no offence, kind of seems like pointless …

I am a Christian, should probably do a way with fake stuff like this but for now I won't. My favourite hero is Achilles from the Trojan war, I learnt about him through Wikipedia and various websites and also from the movie Troy (2004) starring Brad Pitt as Achilles. I like the idea of Achilles because he is said to be the embodiment of grief of a people or tribe or nation according to the previous Wikipedia article about it him which is now edited differently but other sites still use that writing. It reminds me of a light coming forth out of darkness, someone rising from the bottom or a diamond found in the mines. Also I just like him because he is portrayed as some cool…

Accidentally discovered, or at least it seems like it, a novel treatment for an uncommon disorder.. Very close family members' case. Many readings and analyses done along with gathering professional opinions during physicians check-ups. Author is certain about treatment success, because even if the final outcome would be less positive than expected it would still be far more helpful than the only approach known in the medical market at this moment. The idea requires taking advantage of FDA-approved components available now or in 2-3 years timespan. Lets say that an idea is interesting and worth checking. Hearing a professional opinion is highly demand…
