IMG_20170813_0002.pdfI want to produce a drawing of an oddly shaped aquarium. The shape is so odd it's difficult to visualise, doubly so if i want to help someone else to visualise it. Does anyone here know how to draw objects, something like a mechanical type drawing. The actual shapes and proportions are more important that dimesions. The aquarium consists of three round tubes, It's easier to state sizes so the three round tubes are 48" in diameter, the center of each tube would be at the vertices of an equilateral triangle. Each side of the triangle is 96" long and each tube is connected to the next via a rectangular tank 48" long and 24" wide and the heig…

What's the best piece of software for organizing projects, charting goals, seeing what's on your agenda for the day / week / month / year, etc? I looked at iMind Map and it looks decent. Looking for something that will help me become more organized and efficient in executing my plans.

If God appeared before your eyes and told you that this world we are living in currently is actually a video game and that there is an afterlife that you automatically go to after you die with no conditions/requirements/strings attached but no Heaven or Hell, how would you change how you live your life today?

Maybe it is a boring theme, but if someone wants to comment, I will be happy to read. What do you think is happening to Venezuelan society? Can this be called a degradation? Or is this only a fluctuation on path of progress? Or is this actually a progress when looked from a different perspective? Or is it just a logical consequence of some external pressure? To me, Venezuela is an interesting example to study as it has plenty of natural resources. My personal opinion is that this already can be called degradation. When I look at individuals in this society I understand that the each individual strives for the better. Yet, the society as a whole spirals down…

Wouldn't a small capsule - that has external arm/gloves - be more practical for working in free fall than a space suit with legs? Seems like legs are mostly not used on space walks and having space suits with them adds complications that serve no real purpose. You could pull your arms back inside a capsule and scratch your bum - do all those necessary things like eat, drink, piss, blow your nose or wipe off sweat. Also you could have access to the essential hardware, in case. A capsule wouldn't have to have a lot of internal space. It would also be possible to have mechanical grabbers and tools operated by internal controls. Any designs for such a thing out there?

I am about to get a new monitor. I am stuck between a 22'' and 24'' Dell monitors. They are the same quality and resolution, the only difference being the size. Now, everyone is suggesting I get the bigger one because it's - bigger but I don't quite get it. Can't I just buy the smaller one and bring it a bit closer to me? That's why I don't get it when people buy 30+ inch monitors and keep them far away from their eyes. Everyone seems to smirk at that remark, the argument being - ''well it's bigger''. Can anyone give me an actual reason why a bigger monitor would be better?

Hey everyone Does someone know what programme is used to make graphs as in the figures attached? Doesn't look like SPSS or R, but they seem to be the product of the same programme, and their layout is very recurring among scientific (medical) literature. I'd like to adapt that style so I'd like to know what programme they were made in. Thanks. Functionella blah blah

Does anyone know when and if the bog standard TV coax plug has changed its specification or better can provide any dimensioned drawings? It a long time since did any wiring of coax aerial cable but I have a box of coax plugs and other fittings from the mid 1970s (new). Needing to wire up a new TV and aerial I fitted these to new cable and plugged in the aerial. The TV steadfastly refused to acknowledge the aerial and I noticed some trouble plugging in. Sourcing some modern new coax plugs and fitting one of these resulted in immediate life in the TV. So I inspected the older plugs and compared them with the newer ones. Average ce…

Is it just me, or are most political threads just devolving into ridiculous childlike finger pointing and name calling? And I mean rapidly. A thread started about a potential presidential candidate devolved in just 1 page to complain about the failures and qualities of the current president. And moreover, there's a massive gap between two sides of the debate. If someone takes, and let us be real here it's usual conservatives vs liberals(not libertarians or something), a conservative standpoint they're immediately accused of supporting EVERYTHING that the conservative parties support. Likewise, if someone takes the liberal standpoint they're imm…

I kindda liked this site despite its shortcomings because there are some very knowledgeable people and a few real scientists. I don't have to say goodbye because of the incessant splitting of threads and disruption of conversations and, quite frankly, I wear my high negative rating like a badge of honor since so many of the negs came for my best posts. No, I'm leaving because I've essentially been banned for speaking the truth. It seems most people here only like to see truth when it agrees with their own understanding of science. Not even simple physics can be accepted when spoken by a "crackpot". Before I log out forever I do have one sugg…

Hi all, I'm going to be in London on Sat. 6th Jan 2018 with my wife. I'm looking for suggestions of interesting exhibitions that have a science/technical/engineering theme but don't require a BSc to appreciate. For example the Science Museum has its History of Indian Science, which looks like a good candidate. Thanks Ian

Speaking of money problems I was thinking a lot about suicide recently. I can't get a drivers license because of mental health issues and now I can't get hired for a well-paying job because of it. And most jobs require a driving license and I just can't have one and now I can't get a good job. I also have tons of health problems and I'm not feeling well most of the time and I also vomit very often so I cannot go to work because of my health problems. The way I see it is either to commit suicide or live in poverty or in a crappy low-paying job for the rest of my life and depending on others all the time.

Trying my hand at making Posca a drink primarily consisting of vinegar and water, reportedly favored by Roman soldiers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posca For the first run I went with a "Sweet Recipe", 2 cups simmering water with 4 spoonfuls of honey and 3 spoonfuls of vinegar. Surprisingly good. Was hesitant after getting a whiff of the vinegar, but it has a good taste to it. Other loose recipes variously suggest additions of salt, melon and/or ground coriander. Going to try whatever ones I reasonably can and see how it goes.

Hello everyone A small nitpick for those who love typography and typesetting and such. In my thesis, I indent the first line of all paragraphs but the first ones. However, I'm wondering whether I should indent the first line of new paragraphs starting under tables or figures, when the table/figure is aligned at the top of the page? It looks a bit silly when indented, but it might indeed denote the separation of this paragraph from the former one on the previous page, and might therefore be obligatory (as far as we can call something obligatory in typography). What would be your personal preferences? Thanks! Baccalaureus functionellus
