Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

Hi I'm ne to the whole forum thing and I have a specific reason for joining, curiosity... I want to know if anyone can help me with my problem? How will I go about to determine the mass of an unknown object without dusing a scale of any kind or density, i.e. the displacement of water. Thank you in advance

what do you think about this? Should we have a poll? Should we have a debate? Or is it a non-issue. Can you treat someone with kindness and respect and at the same time laugh at them? Suppose I or some other staff (some supermoderator or local expert or the like) makes of their own volition a pompous statement that seems ridiculous to you. Suppose you cant think of any reasonable response but laughter----it seems too silly to argue with. What should you do? Well probably this has never happened. Our mods are cool people and they never pontificate and say clueless stuff. BUT SUPPOSE SOME TIME ONE DID! What would be the legitimate, socially responsible reactio…

How are gasoline prices going elsewhere (I am in Oregon, USA)? We are back over $3/gallon, and finally, polls say many people want smaller vehicles, and hybrids. I do trust the market here to force people out of their bad habits. There are many 'hog' trucks in a little rural city like Grants Pass and if these people are hurting I am not sorry. Are Europe, Australia, etc., seeing such a rise from your previous price levels? (I get 30 mi/gal in my Subaru wagon with piano tuning tools and parts),

I ask this question as the risk of being OT (i) to find out more about where eveyone is coming from and (ii) to get some good picks. My list would be, although not necessarily in this order: 1. The Navigator (not Flight of the Navigator-it was a complete suprise to me) 2. To Kill A Mockingbird (no one did decency like Gregory Peck) 3. House of Games (the characters were so appealingly twisted); 4. Saving Private Ryan (I thought I appreciated the Greatest Generation but after the first few minutes I knew my gratitude did not run deeply enough; any movie that can instantly change your POV within the first few minutes is a great movie); and, 5. Contact (not…

I'm working on a "short film" of sorts and I'm looking for computer-generated animations of atoms. I'm not talking about cheezy little gifs, I'm looking for something that's good quality. Anyone know where I can find some? Also, anyone know the legality of using short clips (~10 seconds) of other peoples work in a free film? I'm guessing it's not legal without permission...but I see them all over the internet.

This is a film put out by the Immortality Institute. I'll be the first to admit that these people are a little nuts, and the whole film comes off that way. But still, it's awesome: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6581761732541483047 The basic ideas are: Immortality is the ultimate goal of medical science. Medical science will soon be extending human lifespans in faster than realtime, i.e. procedures will add more time to human lifespans than the time it takes to develop them. Once this happens, humans (who have access to life extension technologies) will essentially be immortal. The film also discusses transhumanism and the Singularity. Yay!

How hard is it to raise a GPA??? Will I ever be able to raise it to at least 3.5 by the time I graduate??? Any tips??? I really need to get myself on track so my life isn't screwed.

I'm sure many people have done this...in fact Dave Gorman created an entire show, where he met the people who shared his name, simply by googling and arranging to meet with them. So far I've found two people that share my name. One bloke is in a gay calender called 'naked ambitions.' He's an engineer, and is posing with a tape measure. tee hee The other is currently studying his masters in mathematics...somewhere in the states, I can't remember exactly where, off the top of my head...though I have thought about getting in contact with him, as I'm starting maths at the end of the year. Has anyone else googled their name, and found interesting results ? E…

Ok so i've noticed that in a lot of threads just now it all seems to be going horribly off topic before being closed by a moderator and ending what could have been a good discussion if it had its own thread. Since i'm a bit of a fan of how a discusions topic can change over time(how me and my friends got from a debate about the matrix trilogy to the monarchy of sweden i will never know) i wanted to start a thread where there is no set topic and it just gradually flows from one subject to another, hopefully without being shut down by a mod. Just call it an experiment. So, now to start off with were going to need a topic to begin a half decent disscussion that every…

Somehow I managed to stumble across the website of one 'MC Hawking' - a rapper who likes to rap about science. If you think I'm making this up then just read the (somewhat hilarious) lyrics to his song about entropy: So far I have been unable to find an audio file, but if you want to read more lyrics from such classics as 'E=mc Hawking', 'F*ck the creationists' and the somewhat less science related 'All my shootin's be drive-bys', then go to http://mchawking.com Seriously I can't make this stuff up

I was recently nominated to the national dean's list and I had to write down some professor/educator that inspired me. I'm going to put the first biology professor that inspired me. I don't think he inspired me intellectually, but he inspired me that a person can be and smart at the same. His knowledge on a subject was always there whenever I asked a question about biology. However, I'm suppose to use a prefix. Now, I called this guy up on his cell--about me choosing him--but he never called me back or shot me an email. I don't know if he has a doctorate's or some other type of degree. He may have a masters, but I don't know. What do you think I sh…

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,19130870-421,00.html?from=rss I presonally agree with that 100% - copyright should only be enforced where people are gaining money from selling copies and stuff... its about time a country stood up to this damn madness - they have taken copyright way too far. Cheers, Ryan Jones
