Lately I've been wondering if there's more than two ways to fly... I mean, we've gotten so used to prop/jet propulsion over the last few hundred years or so that I wonder if we've forgotten or never even though of revolutionary methods? I've heard on a couple of tv programs that scientists are finding out that airplanes and boats have a lot in common or something; I guess like lift and boyancy are similar somehow? Anyway, I've been thinking about magnetic propulsion systems. Really creative stuff I think; like electromagnets spinning props that generate lift, or using magnets to somehow ionize the air and create lift that way; basically what flying i…

Would anyone happen to know what material this is made of? It's a friends and he says it's from a juggling set. I looked online and it looks like they call them "devil sticks" or something. Anyway, I'm trying to make a short star wars fan film with my friend and I think if I could get a longer piece of this material (about a meter; 3 feet) it would make the perfect lightsaber blade. Lucasfilm used carbon tubes but those are out of our price range... Better yet, I think it would be even better if we could find a rubber tube with small enough diameter so that it would fit comfortably. Someone said on another forum that it was fiberglass...but too me i…

  4. There are so many little options for everything from cars to refrigerators that sound great and supposedly add convenience but really only cost you money. And many gadgets that supposedly save time are just money-wasters too. I'll list some good and bad, feel free to add: BAD- 1. Hood bras for cars--what are you protecting the paint for if you never take them off? 2. Electric seat/mirror adjustments for cars--OK if the car has multiple users, but if you're the only driver, you set it once and then never need it again. Plus they're slower than adjusting it manually. 3. Ice-makers/water dispensers in the doors of refrigerators--savings in energy from not having to op…

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6092653.html It seems that Windows 98 and ME support is ending. XP is about $200 (or $100 to upgrade) (http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22&pcid=a9d2c448-eb05-4a2b-a062-9c711c533e0c&type=ovr). I think linux will get a boost. It won't be too hard for some to switch to ubuntu, right?

I could see where we've done favorite movies but not television programs. Hands down my favorite TV program right now is the new Battlestar Gallactica. I was not a huge fan at all of the original but the remake on the sci fi channel is awesome. One of my favorite actors, Mary McDonnell, is perfect as the President of the Colonies, the Cylons are multidimensional (not to mention sexy in their female form) and most episodes swing on political and religious intrigue more than in some continually penultimate battle.. They kept the best part of the old show - its story arc - and breathed life into characters who were at best card board cutouts in the original.

I thought I was going to die today Most people dont know, but I am the most insectphobic person ever. I run and scream like a little girl whenever I'm around them or see them. So today, around 6:30 AM, I was driving home from work and I had the windows rolled down, and the radio turned up loud, and I was minding my own business. Then at a stoplight, this huge insect (a grasshopper about 2 inches long) flies into my car and lands on my dash, and it scares me half to death, but I cant pull over to shoo it out of the car. The bug is just hanging out, looking at things go by through the window, so I wasnt worried about it... until it turned around and faced me... and…

Some people on another forum have been talking about the web site: http://www.whatisthesecret.tv According to them, it is a movie that reveals a shocking truth about science. You can watch the trailer for free, and it looks very interesting. However, why isn't this in regular movie theaters if it's so good? I don't want to waste my money if it is a bad movie. I tried searching for it on Google, but I can't find any good information. If anybody else has watched this, can you tell me if it's any good or not? Thanks.

  13. hello since i'm from the u.s. and know a lot of you are from else where, was wondering this. a lot of people on the forum say how they don't understand the people of an other nation, or ask 'why do they act that way.'. so before i've got to stop dropping by so often and get back to work (funding good), thought i'd pick up a few suggestions on the matter of some films or tv shows along the following theme. if someone wished to understand the people of your country better what films or tv shows do you suggest they watch. i imagine fairly commercial films that stand a better chance of being available in other countries. also films and tv shows that reveal…

because i didn't think 'the wisci discussion thread' would get as many views This article is scan-readable for your convienience. For my own learning, any feedback as to the the effectiveness of the scan-readability, in this thread or via PM, would be appreciated OK, first off: WiSci (ws) has the potential to be good. yes, wikipedia (wp) is cool, but it's not geared up entirely to science so suffers from certain failings (as far as science articles go) that ws could inprove -- plus, being scientists and what-not, we should be able to be innovative and push the 'wiki' technique to interesting new places. And SFN having a wiki offers more than the potential to…

Taking the world cup, soccer has been on my mind for some time. I was thinking of a formation which is rather unusual but I can't figure out if it is legal in soccer terms or not. Well my first formation was a Circle. This way the ball stays inside the circle, the opposing team cant get it unless they foul one of the players ( taking that the circle is tight enough.) But my brother suggested that if they pass it to each other behind a defender it would be offside. So i came up with a better plan. umm.. 1 player in center, 3 players on one side, 4 players on second side.. joining those sides, 1 player at both ends. looks like.. --…

The fact that redbull has warnings that say "red bull doesn't actually give you wings" in it's commercial make me very sad. Here in Canada Tim Horton cups have warnings like "This coffee is hot". -_-' The hell! How will this evolve? How far will it go? Commerical: A friendly message from your local police "Please don't step in front of cars." maybe shoes with instructions... Place feet in shoes. stand up, move one leg foward and then the other, balance is key. I tell you, it's hard to optimisic with this world.

  21. http://www.slate.com/id/2142547/ I think everyone can admit that mechanized production of meat, milk, and eggs has resulted in factory farms with deplorable conditions, and we should all at least feel bad for the way in which our food is produced (however it hasn't stopped me from eating eggs, milk, cheese, etc.) Is this the solution? Can we have our meat and eat it too?

Is it possible we will ever come to a point where we can not only decode the genome of other species rapidly, but learn how to program in the language of DNA? Is it possible we will learn how to use DNA sequences to create our own species, their own genome, cellular structure, and organs upward?

The ubiqitous light bulb that lights up our home with the flick of a switch is now hundred years old. In 1876, Thomas A. Edison set up his home and research laboratory on the site of an unsuccessful real estate development in Raritan Township called Menlo Park. It was in the Menlo Park Laboratory that Thomas Edison came up with his most famous inventions, including the phonograph and electric light. Christie Street was the first street to use electric lights for illumination. Edison subsequently moved his lab to West Orange in 1883. (Reference.com) I think Thomas Alwa Edison will remain on this earth till the last ray of Light remains.
