I saw a programme today on British television which showed the inside of the Grand Temple of Freemasonry - the United Grand Lodge of England. This was pure propaganda for the Freemasons and showed, at one point, light emanating from the genitalia of one of the Grand Masters of this movement. Freemasons were trying to show it as a charitable organisation which is involved with the improvement of the self. I don't believe them! In my opinion, it looks, from a perfunctory reading, that Freemasonry is a religion with religious rituals and is set up to organise mutual backscratching to the point of illegality. Freemasons that I have come across in the past have …

  2. So I'm working in research, designing diagnostic kits...private industry. The science involved is mostly protein chemistry..fairly basic biochemistry and bioseparation. My degree is in biotechnology, and I have a fairly good understanding of genetics. I'm interested in eventually getting into genetics...specifically gene therapy..but I'll do what I can get. Can any of you grey hairs give me some tips on this potential career transition? Would I be qualified for such a change? ~EE

  4. For a specific project where I seem to have exhausted most possibilities, any relevant suggestions would be appreciated. I need a list of substances or substance-like things which need to be particularly unique in some way, likely more general than specific. The substances could be anything from wood, rock, halogens, oxides, plasma, magnetic monopoles, neutronium, alcohol to anything with noteworthy properties. However, I cannot use substances that are purely fantasy or created out of thin air in movies and games. At the least they must be accepted as scientifically plausible. It also would not help to be overly specific. It wouldn't be worth mentioning acetic acid since …

  5. Enjoy Life to mean life for GPs GPs will no longer be allowed to leave the profession, according to plans drawn up by the Department of Health. An imminent change of law will make it illegal to stop being a GP. The move is expected to eliminate the current shortage of 5000 GPs within a few years. The news follows a call from the Royal College of General Practitioners for urgent action to halt the exodus from general practice. Under the proposals expected to be announced by the government next week, the GP contract will become binding on both parties. A government spokesman said: “GPs have long enjoyed the protection of a contract for life, but they were fr…

I'm currently in a life sciences career. BS in Biotechnology, R&D, $38k /year). My boss tells me that life sciences isn't a good, long-term career. Don't expect to be making above $50k in your career, and to get out later on, or find a managerial position. Better career options would have been computer science or engineering. He's not being cold or rude...he's pragmatic and honest. My boss is a successful PhD, he knows life sciences well, he's trying to help me early on. Any suggestions on what to do with this info...any experience from your careers you can share? ~EE

  9. If the apple didn't fall on Newton's head, could mankind ever get his priceless theory? What would have happened to the present world if Pythagoras never discovered the famous theorem? Could modern trigonometry develop without it? Or, is it more probable that some other person would have invented them? Could modern science be developed without Faradays' experiment or Maxwell's explanations about electromagnetism? It seems that if those legends hadn't been born, our world would have never come to this level. What do you think about this? Any thoughts or ideas or imaginations?

  10. hey guys... If you have interest in science and enjoy learning and studying, does this necessarily make you a hard working employee should you join the workforce? In what situations would this be the case and in what situations would this not be the case? What is everyone's personal experiences from viewing the world? I heard people who enjoy learning about science tend to be quite lazy and this explains why they have so much time to ponder upon scientific/philosophical questions ordinary folk don't even bother looking into or thinking about. thanks, mad_scientist

Can someone remember the title/name of a sixties television show/program featuring competitive, athletic type of activities, with creative challenging games ? -Not standard sports- I remember little as being black and white; same exact era Shindig! was aired; usually took place in stadiums, participants were mostly teams of universities? or countries. By some reason I think Germany had some to do with it, but unsure.

  19. Hi guys, I recently heard that now there are glasses that you can buy if you are colour blind to see the missing colours from one's regular vision (http://enchroma.com/). I am just wondering and have been thinking all humans are actually all colour blind to a large extent as we cannot see the large range of light out there except what is in the visible light spectrum. The mantis shrimp for example (http://www.livescience.com/42797-mantis-shrimp-sees-color.html) has 12 colour receptors in its eyes and has excellent vision. Will science ever advance in our century enough to provide glasses which we can use to see light from the infrared, UV and other ranges so…

I've got a sudden chess tournament coming up tomorrow. I haven't practiced or studied, but I would still like to do well. I have identified that my most major issue in chess (and other things) is lack of concentration. It happens more often than it should that I have a good/better position then I blunder after a long game because I lose focus and just wait for the game to be over. That's why I'm disproportionately bad at blitz (speed) chess as opposed to classical. It's not just chess. When I studied for college, I would often just stare at the page for a long time not reading anything, because my mind tends to wander off too much. Does anyone know of any good wa…

Brilliant use of the comma in a recent moderator decision: And, while we are at it, there is the Oxford comma: And the comma of direct address (more informally known as the Donner Party comma) which makes the difference between: "Let's eat, Grandma!" and "Let's eat Grandma!"

I didn't see any general discussion immediate bitcoin threads on SFN in the search the last time I looked, so I am making this thread. I'm outsourcing. If you don't know about bitcoin, you may want to start here: https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf I have read and read about the bitcoin project, and it seems great. I took some accounting classes in high school, been paid a paycheck, had to experience what it's like to "know the value of a dollar," so I understand the principles of what is going on. What I like about Bitcoin is that on a more mature level, it's like it's auditing the value of a dollar so that you REALLY know what it means to earn that dollar, thus r…

  25. Instagram, twitter or Facebook have been a thief of a teenage's time and mostly some adults. Back into the big question "How a teenager should manage the social media?" the answer should be to control the time that we spend on it? we just delete our accounts? how much care we have to have? And i mean, when we post a picture on our profile is a past in that. How we add the effects, why we choose that photo. The media is taking ourselves more dependent of others. and thats is good or wrong? Should we spend many time a day checking others life...? the cyberbullying is increasing because more people care about this medias. Whats the right and smart solution? Put your account …
