Which is the better franchise? And why. I know it's not quite comparing like for like, one's sci fi and mainly a series the other is space opera and mainly films, but still, just for fun. I've not watched the newest Star Trek offerings, or seen the Star Wars series but here's some of my thoughts. For Star Trek Star Trek actually explores alien cultures, Star Wars just shows them. Its aspiration for humanity clear and well communicated. Solves many (perhaps too many) problems by using 'science'.- you know, realigning the warp core manifolds to increase the power output of the deflector dish. Really celebrates science. Spock.…

Scrolling down the Activity list to the first break I find all the subjects are scientific. This is the first time since I arrived been here in april2012 that I have seen this and better still not one is from a crank. Is this a record?

  4. I'm watching this video with Quine and at around 1:29:00 he's talking about mathematical logic and he says how it was once "this trivial, stamp collecting offshoot of serious mathematics for pedants and playboys" until it became relevant for computer science. Now, I think I understand his general point, what I'm curious about is: 1) why does he call it a "stamp collecting" offshoot lol How was mathematical logic an activity akin to stamp collecting? 2) I get "pedants", but how was it the activity of "playboys" lol

Retailers often claim Amazon is going to put them out of business. They also said that about Costco and Home Depot, but even those big box retailers complain that Amazon eats too much into their brick and mortar business market. Part of me loves Amazon, since it let's me (seemingly) disconnect from the mainstream consumer train, only buying exactly what I need without having to mess with travel to a bunch of brick stores, being inundated by the general marketing once I'm there, and having to deal with all the people who dislike their jobs because of poor pay (because their employer has to compete with Amazon?). It pleases me to think Amazon knows who has just what I…

  10. So a friend of mine who owns and runs a couple of local pharmacies got divorced recently. We have sit downs from time to time to exchange knowledge - I give him some physics, he gives me chemistry/biology. He's back on the dating market, he recently (hes 44) met a girl (35) at some party, they ended up on his porch watching the stars on a stary night. She inquired that the stars look so beautiful but they're probably very far away - like 200km far away. She also asked him what is Oligocen water (theres a lot of wells here, everybody knows/uses them), weather it is called "Oligocen" because its holy water or maybe something else. The end.

I would like to propose a numerically measure for quality of post, our likiness to be a crackpot (trends of this ratio are likely to be a key predictor). The misconception ratio = number is misconceptions / number of words (units are cracks) As this tends to 1 as I tend to hit my head on the desk. I'd speculate that 0.01 cracks is a general upper limit for a post, although would value some input and analysis of real posts... I'd also like to know a warning level, no one is going to have a value of 0 cracks for all of their writings but is 1 millicracks acceptable?

  13. I get the idea the body can't deal well with (some) molecules like fructose or starch & so stores them as fat. (Versus e.g. glucose.) Instead muscle is broken down easier (or let's say faster, than those difficult fat deposits). During childhood & teens those specific fat deposits might not become noticeable. But later (in life, accumulating) things like "beer bellys" & "bread baskets" become noticeable on some human bodies. Those rounding curves don't get smaller on their own (either). The (natural) tendancy seems to be: getting "fatter" (no matter how hard trying to reduce (fat) weight). Considering: (many…

Hey all.... In a humble attempt to get to know some of my fellow SFers, I was wondering if you would be so kind ad to share with us what prompted you to choose the username you did? What is its meaning? What message were you hoping to convey to us by using it? If indeed there was one. And also what's the story behind your avatar? If its of, say, a TV or movie character...like our resident GOTG's Negasonic Teen....why did you want to use it here? As always.....much thanks for your time with this. I'm looking forward to reading some interesting and amusing stories and explanations. I'll share the origin of my username after we give a few if you the chance to …

So...now I can finally say I've seen a documentary that had changed my life. Or...at least my Outlook on life....my opinion on both our Government...and maybe even our future. I'm speaking of the Superb, chilling, compelling, and totally Game Changing, paradigm busting documentary by Dr Steven Greer. Unacknowledged. Filled with unimpeachable souces all testifying about how we've been visited by extraterrestrial intelligence for decades now. And how the government had spent billions trying to hide that fact. Yes. I did say unimpeachable witnesses. Like ex CIA directors.... military high ranking officers....the former Chief of Operation Blue Book. D…

Hey cats....I have a sort of off da wall, but I think fairly intriguing thought problem for you. We were chatting a little Saturday about terrorists and potential terrorist actions occurring in the US. So maybe some residue from that was on my mind this morning while I was watching the new Netflix reboot of the old Lost In Space TV series. BTW....it's very well done, I think. So....in that series, the Robinsons have this all terrain vehicle that's sorta like a Hummer on steroids. Thing can climb over just about anything. I was enjoying watching this thing do some impressive high speed off roading and thinking...Hey.... that's what I need for driving around here!…

  24. Everyone has life long goals/dreams, but many of us don’t achieve them (we procrastinate, and follow inefficient routes). One of the sources that block us from reaching our goals is the way we train up our emotional state. Why do our brains have emotions? To start explaining from zero… DNA is a molecule which contains the ingredients to manufacture our bodies. The competitiveness of the environment pressured this molecule to evolve in a certain way, so that it could engineer a human. The brain is the organ which coordinates how the other parts of the body behave. The framework of the brain is designed by information within DNA. This fra…

This is a bit of a silly thread but it something that has been annoying me of late. It seems that nearly all shows and movies coming out nowadays treat their entire plots as secrets. I understand some stories have twist endings or are center around riddles but all stories aren't mysteries. I am finding it increasingly difficult to even get a useful synopsis of stories. As a result I find myself simply watching less content. Since I can't get a feel for the story I just pass. For me knowing a bit of happens is not a bad thing and I feel like in the past this wasn't as big of an issue. How do members in here feel about spoilers? Does knowing a bit a story going in enhance o…
