Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

I like to engage mathematical cranks, occasionally, and mathematical cranks like to throw Wittgenstein back at you. But when I hear what things he gets quoted for, and besides which I am not an expert who knows every quote in advance, then I just think that, well, this guy is famous and supposed to be knowledgeable about, uh, some things, in particular having done a lot of thinking about mathematics. But how is it possible that he could have misunderstood so badly how mathematics functions and what mathematicians try to do? So I just want to ask in this forum, what is your personal favorite quote, opinion or observation about mathematics, which was astute, on …

  2. Hello, are there more approaches in quantum mechanics than deterministic and indeterministic, because if not, we certainly don't have free will. Thanks for answer.

"Nothing is good or bad; thinking makes it so" To what extent is the premise of this statement true? There are numerous examples out there that have highlighted some validity for the statement. For e.g.. the concept of demons and angels. For some reason...demons are being viewed differently in some aspects. Yes intrinsically their characteristics model "evil" but it is their actions that is the end game yes? I see this a lot in animation and games and the saying reflects it. Could anyone relate it to other things in reality?

  4. if karma existed then why are there children's hospitals and children committing suicide? I know some people will say oh its something they did in their past lives, but I think that is a BS excuse to not admit that life is not fair for some possibly many people. if there were past lives why dosent it work that the people get punished in them rather then a different life wouldn't that make more sense? I just found out that a child I used to babysit and play with commit suicide. I did not even get to go to their funeral because they are in Europe. She did it because she was spanked at home and bullied at school and it all just got to her. I talked to a few…

  5. I am a tinker, not a scientist. Years of experimentation and questioning everything has often lead me into situations where I am basically ridiculed for asking what I consider to be reasonable questions. While nothing I am working on should have any connection to “free energy”, I find the suppositions and rationals surrounding it to be more than puzzling. I believe much of it comes down to semantics. I believe “free energy” is abundant but “free electricity” is not. I believe free energy is not free. There is a source even when that source is beyond Newtonian physics as I understand it. In class for milling and machining a couple years ago, magnet…

Some believe the universe has always existed in some form. This is about getting around the idea of something coming from nothing. I have a problem with the idea. How did we get to now? An infinite amount of time is impossible to cross just as an infinite amount of space is impossible to cross. And yet people believe there is an infinite amount of time before this point we call NOW. How did we get to NOW? Seems to me that if you figure in an infinite past then no event can ever happen because it can always be set back infinitely. Not my idea but the idea of a greek philosopher.

  7. Science is the power to manage power intelligently, the power to master power for science produces the deep intimate knowledge needed to master something. The power of science is that it allows us to investigate reality, including power in all its forms and variations. It enables us to investigate everything from mechanical power to institutional power and provide us with a detailed understanding of how, when, where, why and what. The physical sciences like physics and chemistry are providing us with the knowledge we need to harness natural powers so we can turn that energy to our advantage. Scientists are studying the fundamental interactions: the nuclear, electroma…

Hey so my question is the following. How would you create a perfect society from a philosophical persepctive. Like would you set any rules, how would your society run and protect yourself. Also that society must be able to exist in the real world.

  10. Is there a sense in which it might be expected that one or the other process is fundamental to the ways events unfold (not in our subjective lives but purely on a physical level **) ? Is there also perhaps a meeting ground somewhere where it can be said that both happen? I am curious as to whether ,if it is is posited that the universe is ,by its nature (or on the level we observe it) probabilistic a question could be asked if there could be any mechanism that lies behind this and whether that itself might be subject to examination in an experimental way. **perhaps a false distinction.

Hello, 2045 initiative is promising transfer of human brain into a computer. It is weird to me already 2045 it could be theoretically possible and even you wouldn't have unlimited resources like ai at beggining, you would get exponentially smarter as quantum computers advances. Currently 2018 there is no biological upgrade for brain. You can only exercise and eat healthy and train brain, which very important. But you can't like expand you brain, or add 50 000 neurons, or whatever and 2045 it would be possible already to transfer human brain into a computer. I don't know if you know red alert 3, when russian traveled to past and killed einstei…

The true meaning of life is..... to know that there is no meaning , now here me out , you see people always try to make meanings to life like always be happy or keep on liven so you can go to heaven but no the true meaning of life is to just do what you want to do when you want to do it see if you follow the religious meaning of life, the religion can constrict you of doing something that you want to try or do even the 'always be happy' moto some people... just arn't happy and they can express and live they're life like they want to not to always be happy or always sad. I know this sounds depressing but its the truth and if you think about it you will truly be alive.…

  15. Mans love affair with technology has left us with greater emptiness, suffering, loneliness than ever before. True these tools enable a greater population to exist on earth; but is that a plan for a greater tax base which feeds a more sinister technological development?. Today many people run the gauntlet of the world behaving like rats chasing invisible cheese pouring most of their fruits of labor into a machine which fosters a agenda of the clandestine few. Sadly many of the young are blind while in the search for recognition through cell phones and some of their peers have committed suicide and gun violence in cries for attention. America is so fat from choking on M…

  16. This topic talks about the difference between necessity and contingency and it's relation to our universe. This words are common on metaphysics. It talks about existence. When we say a thing necessarily exist if it should exist in all possible worlds. Examples are shapes, numbers etc. Contingency on the other hand can not exist. It is not necessary to our reality. Examples are certain animals like monkey, it exist in the actual world but it is possible also to not exist in other possible worlds. Other is unicorn. It doesn't exist in the actual world but possible to exist in other possible worlds. So base on this I concluded thru my past philosophical studies, that our univ…

I would like to make a philosophical proposal, please bear with me because this is my first one and I want to become better at this over time in terms of organization I would like to propose a new idea, maybe new, which I would like to define as the "The Response." Proposal for "The Response" [ Abstract ] "The Response" is what I would like to call a "virus of the mind and not of the body." Just as nihilism is a mental disease of a man coming to terms with the removal of there "true world" the response is a mental plague which affects us all and by automatically denying it's existence you may be proving that it exists. [ Body ] The forma…

The good in humans seems so much weaker and less able to influence than the bad or corrupt; power and money is so seductive that it seems an unstoppable force. So why, when that power is at its apex, does good prevail?

Per my promise to Eise, the following is a copy of a post that I wrote many years ago. I copied it from another forum, and it should be considered as a first draft, as I can already see that I made changes in my ideas since that time. There is no reference to Established truths like Laws of Physics, Laws of Nature, Universals, or even Mathematics, and I had not yet determined that emotion is real, so there is no reference to Emotional truths. Please note that I was not looking to find truths, but looking to categorize and rate as to reliability the truths that I understood. So please consider: Like all philosophers, I have spent a lot of time contemplatin…

Claiming that someone else has responsibility for one's own actions. For example: Villain in a movie says, "If you don't pay the ransom / release the prisoners then you will be responsible for the death of the hostages" Trump blames the Democrats for his government's actions against immigrants Julian Assange is hiding from the law and claims he is being unlawfully detained etc Does this rhetorical tactic have a name?
