Discussion of computer problems

  1. Started by antimatter,

Well, lately I've been thinking about making the switch from Windows XP to Ubuntu, not that I've really been having issues with XP, but just because I like Ubuntu a little better. As a few of you (Cap'n Refsmmat, insane_alien) may know, I tried to boot it up on my sister's old laptop, and in the process of making a partition, the laptop shut off, and I still cannot turn it on. On the computer I'm using now, a more powerful desktop, I tried using the Live CD to run it, and it seemed to work fine...with the exception of it not having internet... Also, I've heard from some people that Linux doesn't support as many programs as XP does, is this all that true? One of my frie…

I am having some trouble with another computer here. It is exactly like the one I am on now, same software and such..but of course, it is not this computer. Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Since sometime around noon yesterday, whenever the computer is turned on/restarted, just before it gets to the logon screen, a blue screen comes up with the following error: STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error) The Windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x0000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down. I have searched for quite some time now and found no information on this error on Windows XP. Somewhat interesting is …

  3. Greetings. The flag bearer of computer idiots again. Get the DNS probe error in a Chromebook. Before was also in the Linux machine. Power cycling all several times allowed me to enter the internet to post this. There is nothing Windows in my home. There is nothing wireless in my home. Have three ethernet wired devices to the gateway (modem?): A Linux computer; a Chromebook computer, a tuner that receives internet television from the whole planet. Most of the time all works well, but something gets the 'period' and I cannot solve what cannot understand. Reading related articles on the web; they assume everyone uses Windows+Chrome+Wifi and do not apply …

I know the pros of a laptop over a desk top. Whatever purchase we want to make anywhere, everyone can quote all the reasons why we should. They leave us to discover the negatives after purchase - a bad time to find out. I am considering switching from a desk top to a laptop. Please tell me the negatives. I know the positives but what will I be sacrificing? If I know those, I can make an intelligent decision. Thanks.

I need some help (I work on a Windows XP hp pavillion laptop (zd7000)) I kept getting all these spyware warnings over and over. Then the screen froze down. I tried running Ad aware. Everthing froze. I removed the battery which broke the circuit and shut the laptop down. (I'm not sure if this was the best move). I then reinserted the laptop battery and everthing was fine and it came to the Xp login screen. I then clicked on my login (limited account) The screen is just an enlarged version of the wallpaper with no icons showing. And its frozen in this state. The day before I had run ad aware 3x and quarantined all spyware. I don't know why …

I just bought a new laptop for college!!! Now what I want to do is transfer stuff from the desktop I've been using for the past few years to the laptop. What's the easiest way to do this? I'd assume setting up a network but I really don't know what's involved in that. It should be basic stuff transfered like a few word files and some music. Can anyone tell me the easiest/cheapest way to do this? Thanks.

  9. My mom had a lap top from a couple years ago, and she let me have it. I installed XP on it, but it's really slow. It's a Latitude CPi A366XT, has a Intel Pentium II processor at 363 MHz, 128 MB of ram, and 4.52 GB hard drive. First, I need to know how to protect it. I have the free version of AVG, spy-bot search and destroy, and AdAware SE. Are these enough to protect it? And second, I need to know if there is any way to make it go a little faster, it's so slow! Can it take XP? Will other non-free virus/spy-ware protections that would slow the computer less? What should I do? Thanks for your help, I'm not as good with computers as I would like to…

  10. Hi Guys (and Gals), I've really got to learn Visual Basic, but haven't had the opportunity yet. I'm struggling through something which is probably painfully simple, but I've not come very far using my google-fu. Here's the deal. I've got a Form in Access that we are using to fill out information about our training programs. The data we enter should go to an Output_Table, so I create a Form with Wizard that grabs all of the Fields from the Output_Table. Inside the Form, we have a field called Course_Code. The selection here should be pushed to the Output_Table. I have made this a combo box which pulls data from another table called Courses_Table. …

The problem: I'm moving to a caravan at the end of the 260m garden. I have a desktop, running windows 10 and not wifi capable. The house wifi can't reach the bottom of the garden. Can anyone suggest the most cost effective way to connect with the house internet connection, with the minimum effect on bandwidth.

For some reason, my network connection's folder is blank. My LAN connection is fine, but the wireless (on my laptop) isn't. I ran through a bunch of trouble shooting techniques http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826/ ,but none of them worked. I'm running Windows XP Home sp2... Also, I can't get out of Windows classic mode, even through my Window's themes say's in the "XP theme." I wonder if those two problems are related. Thanks.

Just bought a new router, and learned how to boost the WiFi signal. Thought I'd share it. Indoor WiFi uses a weak radio signal (I knew that), so to get the best usage, you need to know where to put the router, and how to adjust your antenna(s). The antenna(s) broadcast in the opposite angle of themselves. If they point upwards (vertical), they transmit horizontal. Like this: So to cover the most of your house, you'll need two antennas forming an "L" shape, like this: The best place to put the router is in the middle of the house, elevated with air around it - never hidden away, and preferably not close to any electric devises, like a monitor/…

Is there a desktop manager for XP where it'll allow you to have different icons on each desktop. basically i want to set it so i have a "technical" desktop(all the AV and maintenance and diagnostic stuff) a "work" desktop(MSword and so forth, but no games) and a "fun" desktop(the ma…

I connected a 1920 x 1080 monitor via HDMI to my laptop, which has a 1366 x 976 screen, and the monitor has a large black gap around it; the screen is not filled. Does the laptop's hardware/software limit the size of the image? Can it be made to use up the full monitor screen? I suspect the pixels used up on the monitor is currently the same as the laptop. W10 is the OS.

  23. Okay, I downloaded that game Guild Wars and although didn't have a good enough video card to keep up with it hoped I could set it on lower qulaity setting and play without trouble (as I am able to do with such other games as Knight of the Old Republic) Cutting my self-loathing rant short, my computer is now stuck in 640 by 480 pixels with 16 bit medium color quality, and it won't let me change the settings. Is there anything I can do? ---edit--- I use Windows XP home edition

I started off with a command like this: echo echo Restarting the pc in 10 seconds..... shutdown.exe -r -f -t 10 -c "Windows XP will now restart in 10 seconds" And I wanted to make it shutdown instead of reboot so I learnt to replace the -r with -s and I also found out that by using a command such as: shutdown.exe -s -f -m *computername -t 10 -c "test" replace * with \\ (whenever I do it it makes it a hyperlink). It would shutdown a remote computer called (in this example) computername. However this doesn't work, the computer I'm trying to shutdown is called Oliver and here's what happens everytime I try to use run the command (below), my question i…
