Mods: Is this acceptable, I am not asking people how they made the stuff, where they got it etc. I'm just wondering what the most dangerous thing you think you've seen / used I saw these when we were clearing out an old cupboard in the chemistry lad last week: I think the most dangerous chemical I have ever seen was something labelled [ce]Hg(ONC)_2[/ce] and it was in the back of one of the school chemistry cupboards... I did some reasearch and this stuff is explosive. My chemistry teacher said he never knew it was there - he said it has probably been there for years, the next day the bomb squad were called up to remove the stuff... I just wish I could have seen i…

The chemistry of pyrotechnics? I've always been interested in fire and fireworks as I know a lot of other people are, I think this is what actually sparked (HaHaHa, spark ignites explosives...) my interest in chemistry. I would also like to show through this thread that people are sensible with their knowledge and chemists is a bomb-crazed maniacs! So I was thinking about a thread related to pyrochemistry and let me state before we start this is not a thread related to the making of any explosive / pyrotechnic devices just a discussion on how they came to the recipes (Not actually positing them) and related subjects. I was thinking we could talk about: Wh…

I've been fermenting all sorts of vegetables recently to reduce spoilage waste in our hot, humid climate with a highly erratic power grid. No issues with the rapid fermenters like cabbage and tomatoes, but the slower ones, like carrots, peppers, radishes etc are becoming susceptible to Kahm yeast. Putting together the full sterilisation/oxygen exclusion kit out here is logistically challenged. I've not come across anyone doing this, but it occurred to me that floating a 1 cm layer of vegetable oil on top of the brew might be a fair substitute for airlocks etc and keep it sufficiently anaerobic underneath while allowing the CO2 to escape. It appears to work a treat, but I…

What are some common chemical compositions for materials used very commonly. An example would be water is [math]H_2O[/math], salt is [math]NaCl[/math]. I'm not asking things like carbon dioxide ([math]CO_2[/math]) because that's not used by the average person (besides in breathing and photosynthesis). And obviously not the ones that I said above.

i took an aluminum tube, 1/4 inch dia. and 2' in length, filled it with KNO3+sugar+sulfer at a ratio of 63:27:10, made a nozzle with some putty stuff that i had, and then i took a BBQ scure and stuck it down the middle, forming a cone shaped core. my experience with this type of rocket building is limited, so i had no idea how the rocket motor would perform. i straped it to my homemade scale(regular scale with an aluminum V spot welded to it, and a hose clamp attached. so i threw it into the hose clamp. due to its length i figured it would probably get in the 5+ second range for burn time...well, i clocked it at 6.35 seconds of burn time, and get THIS, 14LBS PEAK THRUST!!…

I need the answer for this issue because i cannot find it on internet, if this is possible or not. Or the difference between a neutral atom and one that is ionized, about the heating and freezing. The importance is when it should not or there is a difference, then we could ionize oxygen atoms and prevent them from freezing, that would be nice for splitting molecules. When they should freeze, you would say that + and - frozen atoms will attract themselves like a magnet...

Just watched the least creditable show on discovery channel "Myth Busters" And they talked about mystery bullets. A bullet whos properties prevent it from leaving any ballisticks evidence. Like something made of ice. They did tests with frozen H20 bullets which weren't able to reach their target bue to vaporization. So I was wondering if any other substances could be frozen fired out of a gun and do damage to a target then "Dissapear". Also I'm wondering if you could have a bullet made of a highly reactive metal like Rubidium which would react with the victms blood. Could this work?

What are the conditions that favour the set of ,eg blackcurrant jelly? I assume the proportion of pectin to fluid volume is one of them. What about temperature....is that fixed? And does continuing the boil after the liquid is starting to set cause the set to deteriorate?(how fine is that judgement?) Any other parameters?

Hi I would like to know how to make the following materials using HOUSEHOLD MATERIALS. After exhausting my chemistry set, (no I am not 12, ((I am 14))), which reminds me Potassium Iodide and something reacted to make an opaue black solution can you tell me what was going on there? Anyway could I have some ideas to make/buy the folowing:- HCl- Apart from being ill HNO3 HF- Dont worry I will be careful Aqua Regis- '' '' I no it is HCl and HNO3; but what quantities? Alkalie metals- How do I get the temperatures CaO- '' '' '' H2SO4- Without a car battery Cl2- Hmm I think i need i lisence but what the hell Hdrogen Cyanide- mmm ahem (shifty eyes)…

I need to purify some water, but I don't have one of those fancy moonshiner gadgets. I was wondering what you guys use to distill things. Would a clean cup-at-a-time coffee maker distill the water well, since it heats the water to steam which then condenses and drips through your coffee?

i have been researching this compound and sources are conflicting one another, some say it breaks down to a chlorite or chlorate, others chlorine and oxygen, also some say it can be a liquid, others only a gas, some say explosive, some merely say it breaks down. Can anyone give me a DIFFINITIVE list of properties

I'm very interested in electrochemistry and I believe that I can learn a lot from it, but I can't even get it to work for more than a few hours. So far, I just have been using wall outlet power supplies designed to supply power to phones or what ever. These are rated 9-12 volts and 300 mA. I understand a higher amperage would be more efficient, but the power supplies heat up quickly and eventually die. This is apparently because the power supply is almost shorting out or something. Maybe... Anyhow, I'm ready to invest some money into this hobby as it has become to me, so what can I do about getting something that would stand up to what I am doing? Of course, my Dairy Que…

I have read a post somewhere that said that iodine can be extracted from seaweed. How much iodine is present in seaweed and what kinds of seaweed has the highest yield? Living in southern california there is plenty of Kelp and sea grass off the coast and i am very interested in the potential for iodine extraction from these plants. If anybody has any info and even a procedure for the extraction i would greatly appreciate it. ps. if there is another source of cheap iodine that anyone knows of please share. thanks.

Interesting. here is another method for cleaning silver that you could try......from wikipedia http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0022508883900954 I assume it works simply by destablising the sulfide tarnish thus allowing it to be rubbed off easily. But you wouldn't want to leave the silver in it for to long as you may end up converting the black sulfide tarnish to crusty chloride deposits. This patent, found via google scholar, also indicates that ammonia is capable of converting silver sulfide to diammine silver plus free sulfurous by-product. Hence ammonia is useful for cleaning the tarnish from silverware. http://www.google.com.au/p…

Do any of you know a way in which I could succesfully extract sodium from salt? Obviously displacments out of the question as I cannot get my hands on any highly reactive metals but would electrolysis be succesful. If yes what solvent would be needed as I guess water could not be used due to the formation of NaOH? Realsitically is this possible with my limited apparatus or completely out of the question?

i am thinking off building one off those sugar/KNO3/sulfur rocket engines BUT i want the case to be desposible and the rocket too... so what i was thinking for a cheap solution was MAYBE... i could use duct tape (tightly rapped together), I know this is probaly the stupidest thing i ever said but, would it work? (doughts) if not do you guys have any suggestions...
