I am curious of the economic outcome if America had a small happenstance in its economy. Please allow me to entertain your thoughts. Consider Americas economy to have establishments that will give all its registered citizens $60 cash once per day. Every day but holidays. These establishments are as abundant as fast food places and gas stations. All a person needs to do is show up and wait their turn in line to collect the money. The money does not come from government funds. The money being given is projected to reoccur for at least 10 years from multiple civilian contributions out of pure generosity. However, the money is taxed and 25% to 30% of every dollar given went …

The scientific method is always accompanied by a description of the standard experiment that holds everything constant except the variable of interest, [math]x[/math]. Suppose it would be very difficult to design an experiment that separates [math]x[/math] from [math]y[/math], so your experiment instead quantifies the effect of [math]x + y[/math]. Am I right to think the problem is solved if you can run experiments to quantify [math]y[/math] or alternatively [math]x + z[/math] and [math]x + y + z[/math]? If the scientist can verify that there's no interaction, it should be simple math. There might also be the option to decompose [math]x[/math] into simpler variables t…

I agree. Science has resulted in medical improvements that have increased the human life expectancy from 20-30 (before 20th century) years to 67 (now). I think philosophy, especially secular humanist philosophy is second, and art is third. What do you think?

I remember hearing a fellow student talk about how it was a bad idea to teach community college physics. I'm just curious, would it really be that bad to teach at a CC while looking for a research position after obtaining a PhD in physics? Why would this hinder your opportunity to get a real research position when I would think the teaching experience would be a good thing?

I was just thinking about how high technology is changing certain aspects of life, such as education. A lot of things have been replaced, such as paper notebooks. The simple fact that I have to use the word 'paper' (I don't know what else to call them) to indicate that I mean 'notebooks notebooks' and not portable computers, says something about the present. When you search for 'notebook' on Google, you'll get instant results of portable computers, but not any results for paper notebooks that top the page. Of course I understand why, but that's not my point here. There are people who call me a nostalgic person because I prefer certain ways of the past centuries over cert…

On my tumblr, I create strings of art that have particular meaning together, and it takes more pattern recognition than thinking in words, after a period of time you'll start to fall into a trance or euphoric state where everything seems perfect, you'll then be able to imagine psychosis, and ways it may come around, by example and not doctrine. An example of the types of things you'll be thinking: "waking up is like a Sunrise, at first your head is in the clouds, you feel groggy and argumentative, but then like the Sun you rise about the clouds into a new day, and all becomes clear". I will provide an example here (a string of art with meaning), if you study the pictures …

The Renaissance was a time of profound tectonic cultural shifts in intellectualism, belief, creativity, and innovation. It was a time marked by new connections among groups, indivuals, and even among brain cells. Are we experiencing something similar in our modern world, a cultural displacement or paradigm shift writ large? Do you think the changes we're currently experiencing will be a good or a bad thing? Does your answer change in any way when viewed in context of the immediate-term versus the longer-term?

Gentilice is french. Gentilicio is spanish. Volksbezeichnung in german. Gentilico in portuguese. -AFAIK- Is there such word, or perfect translation/meaning in proper English? I thought having seen such word somewhere within English text, but may be confounding the spelling to look for it. I do not want to believe in on-line dictionaries for this one.

I am currently a fourth year student in a mathematics department. I am aware that only science can help to survive humans in future. How do we attract more young people to science? I want to start to do something for it. I want to lecture in university to train younger students, but I afraid that many will laugh at me.

This is one of the oddest thigns I've ever seen: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/08/bros-and-my-little-pony/375793/ If you don't want to read the whole article, there is apparently a lot of young men (average age 21) who are fans of the cartoon My Little Pony, and they have conventions where they dress up and do all the other typical stuff that happens at conventions. What is not explained at all in the article is what the appeal is. Has anyone read about this before and can anyone explain what the appeal is?

Today, August 13th, is Left Handers Day. On this day, we celebrate the lefties, and we appreciate their effort to adapt to the right-handed world. Obviously, the left-handed people must adapt to the simple things, such as scissors designed for right-handed people and fish knives which are only useful when held in the right hand, but there are many more examples. Did you know that left handed people must make a huge effort to read the text on a pen or pencil, as it is always upside down when they write with it? So, look up some left handed people today, and thank them for their efforts!

The other night I was playing around with a couple of magnets I have, they are very powerful and were sold as toys for a short time but injuries to kids caused them to be pulled off the market. The magnets are oblong, thinker in the middle than the ends, about 2" long and maybe 3/4 of an inch think at the middle. The poles are centered in the middle instead of the ends. The idea of them being a toy was that you could throw them in the air and they would find each other and orbit each other for a fraction of a second. They make a rattling noise as they come together and orbit each other. I was eating boiled eggs, yes I like boiled eggs, and I put an egg that had …

Could not find an open thread on movies so if you've seen something good put it here maybe. Try not to give spoilers.. I just came from an advance screening of "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY" and we found it to be a hilarious space romp. We enjoyed it a lot. There are some 80's references so if you're younger you may want to look up the movie Flashdance or you'll miss a funny reference. Earlier this week we saw "Lucy". It was also well done, and somewhat unique. Both are science fiction so might appeal to a science crowd more than most.

There's no antonym for suicide/suicidal, so I'm going to make one. The opposite of suicidal is conservavite, from Latin conservo and aevum meaning to preserve age.
