What are you watching right now? I watched Downfall: The Case Against Boeing on Netflix. Great documentary about how Boeing abandoned their robust safety culture after a takeover from McDonnell Douglas, in which the main pursuit became short term profits over all else. Tragically, this infestation of greed and corruption at Boeing lead to the two tragic Lion Air and Ethiopian Air crashes due to the deeply flawed MCAS system. A good documentary for those who perhaps followed the story intermittently as it broke, but want a comprehensive summary of the extent to which Boeing defrauded the FAA and misled the public, with some direct accounts from Boeing em…

When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer BY WALT WHITMAN When I heard the learn’d astronomer, When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me, When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them, When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room, How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick, Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself, In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time, Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars. Perhaps Walt Whitman came to the…

  5. I am studying artificial intelligence for exam and came to a point where I need to revise everything I stuided. It ofc takes more effort in brain than learning the concept watching tutorials and reading blog posts as you need to memorize it(for exam). Any guidance, on how to crack this position and start revising in such a way everything enters my head? Will yoga and meditation help? How do you guys do yoga and mditation at night? My room is filled with dirt so It is not possible to do yoga here. I feel lazy to do yoga in morning outside. Should I go outside(top of my house) to do yoga and meditation? Will that help? Please guide? Sorry for off topic. Really bothering …

  6. Case study In 1986 the Space Challenger crashed. Seven people died. As far back as 1977 Engineers knew the O rings were potentially fatal. Managers would not listen. The maker of the seal would not listen. Budgets and deadlines were just too tight. Professor Feynman was appointed to investigate. NASA smiled helpfully but knew his findings could prove embarrassing. Staff were scared to tell him publicly what they really knew. The solution eluded Feynman. It was only resolved when Feynman was invited to dinner. The chief engineer remarked on his car engine. The seal at low temperature failed so the pipe joints leaked. Bingo. All that was left was to schedule next day’…

  8. Just as a thought experiment lets say that on June 25th the Pentagon confirms that UAPs or UFOs are indeed crafts of some sort from another place driven by the little grey guys so often described as being their pilots. I am going to add a poll for the four possibilities that cover what is being reported by people who see and or interact with the crafts.

  10. I recently had my first sexual experience and was surprised by how painful I found penetration. Once my penis was inside, there was no pain, but the entry was quite painful, to the point I was wary of it and I'm wondering, is this normal? I would say I am of average size, certainly not large, my partner was wet, so dryness was not a problem (and the problem was narrowness, not chaffing), my partner has given birth to two children (to the extent that says anything about her narrowness, not to be crude). Is entry supposed to hurt? Is this just me not being used to the experience? Could my partner be particularly narrow?

Novak Djokovic is a Serbian tennis player who some regard as the greatest of all time. He has won all of the "Grand Slam"titles, the US, Wimbledon, French and Australian Open, 20 titles in all. He is rightly and understandably seen as a cult hero in his home country of Serbia. He also in recent times, during this pandemic, expressed his opposition to vaccinations in many arenas, contracted covid19 and disregarded isolation and travel in the days following his positive reading, and most recently applied to Australian Immigration for a visa for the Australian Open next week, and put forward some manufactured dispensation with regards to vaccinations. While th…

Is there a book, or a few, that not many people know, but blew your mind? The rules: 1) Scientific books: Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Linguistics, Mathematics, Paleontology, Physics,... The lot! But mainstream science. 2) Not "bibles" of the scientific literature, but can be relatively unknown books from famous author. For example: Dirac's Principles of Quantum Mechanics is not allowed, but Dirac's Lectures on Quantum Mechanics, could be OK. Not best sellers. 3) They can be either technical, or popular science Here's mine: The Quantum Theory of Atoms, molecules, and Photons by John Avery It's a book by a quantum chemi…

Frequently I encounter situations I cannot discern. Example: Touching the volume knob on a "smart" phone device, the screen shows an interactive icon among other things... Is that telling me that the bell is off or is it a button to turn the bell off ? How to know what these "intuitive" icons mean ? There is nothing that helps identify it as a button nor a signal. Do I need a second brain transplant ? Does it happen to you too ? How do you resolve the doubt ? What is crooked in my thinking ? Is implementing these things a product of intelligent or idiots designing operational interfaces ? Are these meant for intelligent operators or for idiots …

Australia just won the third cricket test and the Ashes, being played in Melbourne, by an Innings and 14 runs, going three up in the best of five tests series. For our non cricket playing nations, the cricket Ashes was born in 1882 when a combined team from the Australian colonies, (before we obtained nationhood) defeated England in England and a satirical obitary appeared in the English paper, lamenting the defeat thus..... test cricket is played over five days, six hours a day, with each side of 11 men have two innings to bat. The current test that just concluded saw Australia score 267 in the first innings against England's 185, and then bowling England out…

Ask some teenagers who is one cool cat on the block. Some will include Pope Francis. He is a peoples Pope. He has at least 2 bicycles (gifted by a cycling champion and admirers) He resides in the modest Domus Sanctae Marthae. The more resplendent Apostolic Palace is empty. He quickly dispensed with the Hummer like papal limousine for a humbler Fiat. He of course Heads the Catholic church which does good works worldwide and is universally respected (as with other major religions). He has my vote. He recently hit the headlines. He said its pure selfishness having no or just one child. Also adding childless couples should consider adopting. He criticised the easier opt…

  18. The lines are already drawn. We are a species that survives due to genetic diversity. Different responses at different times to threats ensure our survival or demise. A lot of our responses are already hard wired into our genes. The rest is conditioning. The serious science is heavy going. Some scientists concentrate 100% on science. A few take a 2 minute break and enjoy some light humour. The latter especially if they take climate change as fact and cycling as part of the solution. Your sleeping. An incessant tap on your shoulder draws you from your slumber. Dickens ghost of Xmas to come takes you firmly by the hand. All the way to 2050.Note he doubles as scie…

  19. I'm currently on a quest to buy some missing ingredients to make simple cookies, will probably happen sometime this week. I already have recipes and directions to make simple sugar cookies. But I don't have much of have cooking and baking experience. I know I just gotta watch cookies in oven bake to golden from time to time within mentioned 8-10 minutes (of course presumably dependent on amount of cookie made) or so instead of following the timing solely. My goal is to make the best default cookies ever. 😜

  20. TLDR-: student who feels like doing nothing eg not like to even read a page during some days. Used to happen a lot during exams. Is happening since 15 days, visited doctor, started taking meds. Meds might be doing their work. I need some guidance and advice that I might be missing. 1) I am Computer Engineering student and burnout is really a huge issue for me. I keep getting burn out(IDK the exact word for this tbh). I feel exhausted. I feel fed up studying. It feels like a brain fog. I don't feel like opening my textbook or watching video. I don't want to do anything at all. I instead browse reddit, watch youtube videos to pass my time. I feel so resistant to study…

Having helped crewed a three masted barquentine from Panama to Sydney in 1974, I have somewhat of a love of the sea, and the awesome nature that it brings for mankind to conquer. An annual yacht race takes place on Boxing day from Sydney to Hobart, a distance of 1170 kms, crossing the notorious Bass Straight..... This year has provided some very choppy seas which has played havoc with the 86 yachts this year, seeing more then 36 yachts retire...... Some extraordinary photos on some of the yachts after leaving Sydney Harbour over the years. Sadly though, Six men died, five boats sank and 55 sailors were rescued during the 1998 spectacle when a deep depres…

  22. Last year a report was released on UFO's/UAP's https://interestingengineering.com/government-ufo-report-military-taking-it-seriously It was of course nothing more then the same old, same old, in that some sightings are unexplained/unidentified at this time. Nothing new here. But there was I believe one factual assumption, that was while these so called "incursions" into a nation's air space, in the manner that they are/have been happening, ( you know, mysteriously flittering in and flittering out again, kidnapping individuals and conducting medical experiments etc) they can be seen as a threat to national security, due to their unknown nature. If they are Alien…
