What, in your opinion, is the best free forum software that can be placed on your own domain name (instead of yourforum.freeforums.com, it can be at yourforum.com)?

I read on HowStuffWorks that 64-bit RAM address space equals 2^64 bytes of RAM. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/microprocessor6.htm Why is that?

Just a quick question, before I jump into helping Rajnish Kaushik with his C++. How hard is C++. Is it to the point, or is it crazily stupid and has horrible syntax like JavaScript does.(I strongly dislike JavaScript, JQuerys fine though) How hard is it going from Java to C++. Is it an OO language. And do you peoples have any good links. Thanks Joshua

Hi all, I have a question. It's regarding chess software. The strongest playing chess playing chess program currently is Rybka 3 developed by Vasik Rajlich. Now there are two compiles of Rybka: there is a 32 version for 32 bit Windows and a 64 bit version for 64 bit Windows. I realized that the 64 bit version playes quite stronger than the 32 bit version. What is the reason for this? Why does the 64 bit version play much stronger?

In the very recent textbook from the University of Pennsylvania, Physical Models of Living Systems: Probability, Simulation, Dynamics by Philip Nelson, November 2021, there is a little section in the introduction for students, which I have attached below. My questions for the discussions are: Do you agree with these limitations of computers? Are they temporary or fundamental?

In the book Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python, Professor Guttag asserts that scalar objects are objects that are indivisible and lists int, float, bool, and None. He describes non-scalar objects as objects that have internal structure such as strings. This makes sense to me since a string is, in a sense, an array of characters. I was digging a little deeper and stumbled across an article that defines a scalar object as "an object that can have a single value" and includes both strings and complex numbers. This also makes sense to me if you follow this definition, so which is it? https://jpt-pynotes.readthedocs.io/en/latest/scalar-types.h…

First of all i hate biology.... The living things have being considered as those whom present some characteristics. Growth - You can make a computer that repairs itself and add itself new stuff with a nice coded program. Metabolism - Energy Supply, Batteries, with a nice program that makes the computer indetify energy supply. Motion- Computer would have to move to repair itself.. Reproduction.- Nice code and mechanisms to make the computer build another. Response to stimuli - Kerboard? Sensors? Cameras?

I recently discovered ARP.exe (windows version). I have heard that using arp you can route all data coming in and out of your computer, this is how many hackers can learn usernames and passwords and listen in on your instant messaging conversations. When i run "arp -a" it returns: Interface: 192.168.0.5 ---- 0x10003 Internet Address Physical Address Type 192.168.0.1 00-0f-b5-7c-7f-20 dynamic My computer(192.168.0.5) is on a local area network and 192.168.0.1 is my default gateway. Can someone please explain to me what the information above means? Does it mean that all information entering and leaving my computer goes through 192.168.0.1? Is…

I was looking at a book called The Filter Bubble: What the Internet is Hiding From You, but it seems more opinion oriented rather than factual. The author said, "an engineer told me there are 57 signals that the site uses to figure out who you are." That's great, but I want to know more about how they do it. Let me talk to the engineer. I want something that will build up my knowledge from the basics. If you took classes, please recommend the textbooks used in your computer classes. I like buying the slightly outdated or international editions of textbooks for cheap. I'll just read the introductory chapters and anything that pertains to my interest. I can print out …

I am currently running windows 7 on my pc. However a lot of employers are looking for knowledge of the Linux command line. Considering buying a second pc is out of the question I was told it might be possible to partition my hard drive and install Linux on the partition. But I am scared of doing it because if it didn't work properly I would lose my copy of windows 7 and any files I have. Does anybody know how to do this?

I like to think this is more of a hardware issue, and more specifically a chemistry issue. Do the busses in the motherboard just wear out over time due to constant current? CPU eventually warps over time? I dont know much about computers, so sorry if my theories seem really fundamental. ~ee

do you think that this will EVER happen? about a month ago on TechTV, they were explaining that quantum computers could crack ANY code within seconds/minutes. one example that they gave was the CIA's code...it would take months to years to crack it using todays computers, but only a matter of seconds with quantum computing... for the past months, ive been tempted to write an encryption algorithms that cannot be cracked, but by todays standards, it would be semi-impossible... what are your views on this?

I just checked out an OS called Minix3 and I'm actually quite impressed. It sounds like what they're working on is a pretty good idea. I'll be it, user space possesses normally run a little slower (l4Linux for example runs slower than the the Linux macrokernel), and codding a microkernel is a lot harder to do, but I think a fully functional microkernel might prove to be superior to a macrokernel. My bets are on GNU/Hurd, but people have been "betting on it" for more than 15 years now and I doubt there will be any great releases running the GNU/Linux API any time soon. Tanenbaum (main developer for Minix) is the guy that had a flamewar with Linus in 1992. I don't…

Has anyone else looked into car alarms with expiring code? I want a car alarm that augments its rolling code with code expiration. It might not be an expensive feature—it seems less like an added feature and more like a security update to the code. Theives can intercept and replicate the signal from your remote key, so your keyfob communicates with the "brain" of the alarm system through a special dialogue called "rolling code" or "code hopping". Rolling code systems expire each used code and generate a new code for the next access attempt. Unfortuantely rolling code is no longer enough, and expiring code is the change that will close the hole exposed by Kamkar's …

I can't stand it anymore... Everytime I try to do something admin-y in the control panel, try to change something in the device manager, etc, it just crashes. Also (and this is turning into an annoying persistent problem) whenever I'm connected to my uni's wireless network, it periodically stops working, without disconnected; it says it's a "limited connection" like I'm getting kicked off the local network without actually disconnecting from it - which could actually be my uni's fault. But, on my gf's XP computer, I can just reconnect to the network, and there's no problem. On my computer, if I disconnect from the network, it gets removed from the lis…

Dave Thomas of the Pragmatic Programmers recommends learning one language a year (although probably doesn't himself) What's the next one you're interested in learning? While I'd really like to learn Lisp or Scheme, I think the next one I'd really like to learn is O'Caml. At one point I tried to learn plain vanilla ML, the language that O'Caml's ancestor CAML is based on. O'Caml was created by functional programming wizard Xavier Leroy, and combines modern declarative FP approaches like pattern matching with an extremely fast runtime. O'Caml has seen extensive use on Wall Street for stock market analytics, and was also used extensively by VMware for virtual serv…
