Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Other than the almost universal taboo against incest, does your religion/belief system limit what goes on between you and your lover? Does it limit who you can have sex with? What kind of sexual practices are the most encouraged?

There seems some commonality of the flood traditions from around the world with the biblical account of the flood although there are also differences of them. See the image. My conclusion is these flood traditions seems to originate from a single source. Now what is your conclusion?

Can we say that NDEs are proof of afterlife? Sam Parnia sustained a while that NDEs experiences were caused by hallucinations as a result of the piils given to patients or cerebral damage. But ,after the largest study of NDE's experiences at Southampton university ,Sam Parnia changed his mind ,being convinced that soul ,mind ,consciousness or whatever we call it ,survives death. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHcZc-JJEFw&t https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnoIf2NwaRY&t Not to mention that he is a top doctor ,innovator of resuscitation techniques and others.

In the Bible the snake was the one who tempted Eve into eating from the "Tree of the knowledge of good and evil" telling Eve you will be like God if you eat it. I am wondering if the snake was a liar or telling the truth. According to articles I have read that snake is pretty much Lucifer/The Devil/Satan and he is supposedly the father of all lies and wants to lead all of humanity astray. So was the snake lying or telling the truth? Did Adam and Eve become like God in a way?

It is written that he had an affliction. That he was a prisoner, apparently a traveling one. That at least one person could care less about his chains and actively sought him out. I've read that he was beheaded which might go to show that someone named Paul existed if the act was officially recorded. And then... I realise that society was probably somewhat civilized even back then. But to haul someone around in chains from village to village and allow them to have company over to socialize, to send and receive mail, all seems well, a little bit too civilized. I realise that we can believe incredibly foolish negative things about the way other peoples in other societi…

Cats in Ancient Egypt were most times valued more than that of actual people. Which to a normal person is outrageous, yet most people don’t necessarily understand their beliefs. In Ancient Egypt cats were seen as gods, hence all of their gods having cat-like heads. Another factor that you can even notice today in the modern world is that cats act as if they were “superior beings” or they have “god-like behavior” not necessarily because they are immortal or anything because they aren’t, but because they don’t need humans, they don’t care for them, in a way that if you left your cat outside most likely it would just run off and not care to come back, even though some would …

While I lived in Canada, I made an agreement with Father Boniface. He was a Benedictine Monk.I asked him if Jesus Christ is the son of God, send a hawk to my house window after you die. After about six months after he died, I stood at my living room window in May 2012 in my house on Semmering Austria, and a hawk or falcon flew to my window and sat on my windowsill for a few seconds and then flew away. I have never seen a falcon here before and considered this a sign that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He came to this world to save and illuminate humanity with the Christ Consciousness (I.e Sermon on the mount and the Golden rule)Praised be Jesus Christ!!Peter De-Schuster S…

Was there a REAL person, at the heart of the Christian religion? Of course, if you're a Christian, you will answer yes. But most atheists (like me) would probably say yes as well. There is so much detail written, that you would think that there probably was a real person, around who the tales were woven. That's been my position for years. I have heard of claims by some people that there never was a historical Jesus, but always thought that they were a bit like conspiracy theorists, bending reality to match their obsessive belief. On a whim, I thought I'd have a look at the evidence for a historical Jesus, at the root of it all. And I was amazed. At the lack of it…

This post was written in response to queries from Lasse and is part of an explanation that I promised to Moontanman in the thread "What is a God" presented by Sci-man. It is too large to post in that thread and slightly off the topic, so I started a new thread. This post is in no way an attempt to validate the "God" idea, nor is it an attempt to invalidate the "God" idea, it is simply an attempt to understand the "God" idea. Part 1 of I think that most of us have questioned the "God" concept at one time or other; I was raised Christian and started my questioning 50 years ago in my teens. Even people, who were not raised with a religion, are inundated with al…

The existence of a starting point in the universe that all motion in the universe can be traced back to suggests that this motion is being intentionally created as the result of this event. The classical view is that matter is obeying the laws of physics as it travels through space-time. What is really happening is that a starting point is being created in order to lead to the motion in the present.

I don't believe believe in God or Gods, but I do believe that there must be reasons why humanity invented them. It becomes difficult to figure out all the possile reasons when conversations have to follow strict though sometimes ambiguous guidelines. How do you try to discuss why someone would invent a story about why a supposed God became a man without getting smacked with down votes and the thread almost immediately getting closed afterwards. One guideline is the conversation has to be rational. The sense is that preaching is not rational, I agree. It isn't, and never contributes to a conversation. It becomes a sense of the same old same old. A place where you go …

(Preface/Background) (You don't need to be educated for this discussion, I'm not educated, just be sincere, you can use any number of ways of presenting/simplifying information) (Nothing I see, at all, convinces me, that "Artificial Intelligence" is being produced ................. I don't see "build-learning" ... I don't see "independant, input and output, build-learning" ... finally, nothing resembles any of the complex qualifiers for cognitive process ..................... this is really only the beginning ...................... all I really see is, algorithm driven generators, super search engines, and "model based context building, not -build-learning") …

I read the book years ago while still in my early 20’s and didn’t pay enough attention to it to fact check what and how Hitchens portrays in the book. I came across the 25 minute documentary on youtube which we just watched with my missus who have not read the book. Whats your take on the ruthless Mother Teresa image that Hitch portrays? Has there been any debunks of the sociopathic doings of Mother Teresa?

Evil is real and we are experiencing it. We complain of the evil around us. There are different types of evil as we know such as natural-calamities, manmade-wars, crime, emotional/psychological, physical-illnesses. Now for a moment, can't we just think of the redemption from this evil and the justification of why it happened to the world? Can science justify or explain the evil or religion? And if religion I think it's Christianity that can explain and provide salvation from this evil? For you, what do you think?

Hello, maybe this should have gone in the religious thread but I believe it to be more so religious philosophy. Here goes, as of now, I am inclined to believe a creator. I'd like to note this is through my own opinion, my family is not religious nor are any of my friends to my knowledge. In regards to the big bang theory, it is obviously a form of scientific reaction right? Im not great at science so not very well aquatinted with the specifics. However, my argument is who created the science behind the big bang? As in who made the scientific properties necassery for the reaction? And who created them before? Nothing can exist out of nothing. Therefore, there are two possi…

@DaniWhite 1.) How can something be created out of nothing? When you say, there is no god, no creator, then matter needs to pop out of nothing into the world. How can this happen? Is there a scientific law that says, yes that’s possible? I mean isn’t it the biggest wonder of all, that there is something instead of nothing. That there is an existing universe at all? What if this is a loaded question? That there is no such thing of "something being created from nothing," perhaps the universe is cyclical, and constantly renews itself by the Singularity and The Big Bang. In other words, it's always been here, constantly recycling itself through infinite Big Bangs…
