  3. Hey Guys: For my research project, I would need a python code that will enable me to extract specific lines from a textfile. The textfile has the following format: fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56424 step=1 0.000 0.001 0.001 0.002 0.003 0.004 0.005 0.006 0.007 0.007 fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56425 step=1 Etc.... In fact, I would like to obtain an other textfile without the numerical lines, in the following format: fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56424 step=1 fixedStep chrom=chr3 start=56425 step=1 Etc.... Looking forward to hearing from you soon, Best, JEFF O.

IBM and Toshiba have developed a new superchip called The Cell. It defies Moore's Law as it is well ahead of its time. It's clock speed it said to be over 4GHz (intel's best is 3.8GHz) It works by having specially tuned transistors (it has 234 million of them) and more significantly has 9 cores. You know Intel are showing off their dual processors.... this has 9 cores!!!!! IBM experimented putting The Cell chips together which allowed them to handle 16 trillion calcluations per second. Significantly it doesnt have massive power useage and does now nead extreme cooling measures. The blueprints for it were showsn at the International Solid State Circ…

I can't stand it anymore... Everytime I try to do something admin-y in the control panel, try to change something in the device manager, etc, it just crashes. Also (and this is turning into an annoying persistent problem) whenever I'm connected to my uni's wireless network, it periodically stops working, without disconnected; it says it's a "limited connection" like I'm getting kicked off the local network without actually disconnecting from it - which could actually be my uni's fault. But, on my gf's XP computer, I can just reconnect to the network, and there's no problem. On my computer, if I disconnect from the network, it gets removed from the lis…

I've tested the new Firefox 2.0. I believe it loads web pages well, but the user interface looks very bad. It still has the old "File" and "Edit" toolbar buttons at the top. Look at the interfaces of Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7: Why did Firefox keep the old interface of IE6 and Firefox 1? None of the upcoming Windows Vista programs I've seen have the "File" and "Edit" toolbar buttons anymore. Firefox needs to update their interface by next year or they are going to appear very outdated.

recently i went on a website which had a pop-up message saying: "click yes to enter the website" however the only option was to click 'ok' so obviously you couldnt enter the website, possibly it was done by refreshing the page each time 'ok' was clicked, but it wasnt just the same 'once off' pop up copy and pasted loads of times because i held down enter for a while, and the message just kept poping up, and there was no way it was copy and pasted THAT many times, so what is the HTML code for this pop up which yuo cant get rid of?

im learning how to wright html, and as an exersize im wrighting my first (offline) webpage. its just gonna be a simple jobby explaining to my barely computer-literate family how to use the antimalware programs, what to do if they catch some malware and how to do a few piddly things like defrag the hard-drive etc. the site itself, from a html pov, isnt going to have anything flashy in it: just a colection of text, a few links to other pages on the site and a frame up the top of every page with links to a few of the other pages, sum, umm, i forget what theyre called -- those things you link to by appending #blah on the end of the url -- basic stuff like that, no jav…

I have an old IDE cable at home (approx 13 years old), so you can tell this is an old computer component! what i wanna know is will this 13 year old IDE cable be as fast and reliable as modern IDE cables? old = faster: in the older days they would have produced more quality stuff, where as now they just want the cheapest new = faster: new technology = faster the same: IDE is a fixed speed and therefore it wont have changed. please state in your posts whethere this is something you 'think', have 'heard' (if so where from, how reliable?) or something you 'know' (and is therefore 100% certainly true)

  15. Carl Hewitt, in one of his papers, proved that the Turing Machine is incapable of full-fledged non-deterministic computation. I am too lazy now to look for this paper, I will retell this proof. Suppose we need to get a random number. The algorithm for a Turing machine will be as follows: add 1 go to step 1 or 3 non-deterministically stop It may never stop. For actors, the algorithm is as follows: Send to yourself 2 messages "stop" and "+1" The computation is guaranteed to stop.

  16. I am not sure where to post this topic, it both speculation and a serious possibility in the distant future, Dear moderator if I have put in the wrong place could you move it to where it should be, thank you? Could the Internet become a conscious mind? Source unknown , but I will try to locate where I got it from! Experts compare the Internet to a planet growing a global brain? As users, we represent the neurons. Texting, emails, and IM act as nerve endings, and electromagnetic waves through the sky become neural pathways. Like germinating seeds, this global brain continues to evolve and as some forward-thinkers believe, will not stop until it develops …

I have written a php/html script that will (maybe) allow you to bypass internet censorship at work, school, library, etc. I do not know if if works or not but bassicly it oppens the site in a frame at my site. However, I just realized that censorship programs might be able to track the URL of where the frame is at? So I'm working on something new that will completely send a site through mine w/o a frame but I cannot make images and apps show up on the page; jsut the raw html of a requested page. Another problem is that links would have to go through framed.php and I do not want the url tagging the end of it. This ultimately results in two diferent methods to…

This is my favorite hack so far. I've changed the text "start" on my start button to DEREK (my name) It even has a little picture of my head in place of the little windows icon, just for laugh's. Now i have a nerd friend, who has a nerd friend that supposedly changed the color of the actual button. I can't …

  21. I was looking at a book called The Filter Bubble: What the Internet is Hiding From You, but it seems more opinion oriented rather than factual. The author said, "an engineer told me there are 57 signals that the site uses to figure out who you are." That's great, but I want to know more about how they do it. Let me talk to the engineer. I want something that will build up my knowledge from the basics. If you took classes, please recommend the textbooks used in your computer classes. I like buying the slightly outdated or international editions of textbooks for cheap. I'll just read the introductory chapters and anything that pertains to my interest. I can print out …

Please note: the title is a joke. Click here if you don't get it Shadow asked a number of questions about why I don't like C++ and don't think new programmers should learn it. That said, I do think there are cases where C++ is useful, and depending on what you want to program it might be a good choice. So hopefully we can get into a little about that here instead of disturbing yourdad's thread. There's a few reasons: 1) Many companies are heavily invested in C++ with massive legacy codebases. Transitioning to another language is too costly. 2) C++ remains a great language for developing the core functionality of applications which you intend to…

I picked up the iSearch toolbar somehow, either in a Windows or an HP update and I never use it. Every time I open an Explorer window I have to get rid of it since it makes my screen that much smaller. I can't find a way to uninstall it. Any recommendations or advice? Does anybody use it/like it/hate it?
