  1. Why aren't jet packs out in the world? Doesn't have to be a commercial thing. Why not the military, or super-rich. Im talking rocket powered jet packs, not those pusedo-jet packs that shoot out water -Is it the physics, the risk? The Ford Pinto was a public car at one time, and you cant say that wasn't risky. ~ee

I saw this http://www.sciencealert.com/this-new-2-50-device-extends-disposable-battery-life-by-800#NowInvent abouta device that extends battery life by 800%, I thought this was a good little device, and noticed they where going to fund it by "indiegogo campaign later this year. Do you think this device is worth investing in, and as anyone invested in a crowd funding indie campaign?

Well... It's certainly a sensitive topic and there may be as many answers as people, but notwithstanding that, it would make a fascinating discussion. What I mean is not exactly economic equality but rather the economic standing of middle and lower classes. What I've heard, from people from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, is that the standard of living has been decreasing since roughly 1970s, with golden age being from early 1950s to the beginning of 1970s. (I even heard the same from Eastern Europeans and ex-Yugo people...!) Back then a person living alone in the US could live a fairy comfortable life on a minimum wage. Now two people living together on (each e…

As I understand, copyright is obtained by mere creation of an original work - including software. There is no need to request it... However, I want to abandon this right for my software (if this is at all possible). I understand that there are some licenses available that will do this, but I find all of them way too wordy (yes, I am serious). The question is... can I do it in one short sentence? Here is my try and I wonder if it has any legal weight: "This is a free software and this particular copy is now completely in your ownership."

So here I was talking with a colleague from Morocco and he was telling me about Argan tree goats that live there and how crazy and vicious creatures they are. Being not familiar with the animal in question I googled some images and then suddenly it was all clear! The great and long-sought after answer was here all along! Goats! Why else would prehistoric ancestors of humans get down from the trees? It's so nice and comfy there, hard for predators to get to you, but no, imagine you're sitting in the tree minding your own business and suddenly you're attacked by a vicious goat! How terrifying! I also had a look at some pictures of ancient human bones with so-called …

I've actually noticed a strange correlation between our traits and our hobbies. Most people tend to develop hobbies based around their strengths. It's almost as if evolution has equipped us with an in-born desire to engage in activities that play to our strengths. For example, I am very intelligent. I didn't work hard to get this intelligence, either. When I was a kid, I could sleep in math class, and still pass the class. In fact, the teacher allowed me to sleep in class BECAUSE I was still passing. That's not effort, right there. I was born with my math skills. I can't beat around the bush, here. As inspiring as it may be for a story, to say that I passe…

  12. Reference here. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/6408927/Internet-rules-and-laws-the-top-10-from-Godwin-to-Poe.html A half dozen threads here have crashed on one obstacle, it seems to be a characteristic problem of science oriented discussion in particular, and it would be handy to have a reference term for the next time it comes up. The pattern: The demand for "evidence" to support a misrepresented argument, used to block by repetition attempts to make an existing argument or even discuss some issue. Examples: The demands for documented examples of one step "macroevolution", complete sequences of transitional forms, disappearance of ori…

  14. Hi, I am looking for a title/catchy slogan for a new experiment idea. My lab group are trying to raise funds to build some large outdoor enclosures to study wild mice in a semi-natural environment. We are going to look at what consequences individual differences in metabolic rate have on fitness in a semi-natural setting. We are trying to think of something catchy to emphasise the advantage of studying the mice in these large, semi-natural enclosures rather than in laboratories. So we far we had: - "A House for a Mouse" - FREE: Free Range Experimental Enclosures Any ideas or advise would be welcome. Thanks

  15. This really is a really good place to discuss science and math, which is why I came back, but the other forums are such a persistent distraction. For the rest of 2015, I will not post in any of the Philosophy or Other Topics sections aside from Speculations, Suggestions, and this thread. If I do, bring this thread back. Wow, I screw all the thread title semantics. I just got all hot and bothered when I realized that my other, isolated laptop lacked a C++ compiler.

Checking out at the supermarket recently the young cashier suggested I should bring my own bags because plastic bags were not good for the environment. I apologised and explained, “We didn’t have these things back in my earlier days.” The cashier responded “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” Back then we returned milk pop and beer bottles to be washed, sterilised and refilled. We walked to the local shops and didn’t climb into a car every time we had to go two minutes up the road. Back then we washed babies’ nappies because we didn’t have the throwaway kind. We dried them on a clothes lin…

  17. The idea would be that because each planet(assuming that the aliens that are intelligent think this way) should have a common government, there would need to be a way to merge or develop a new world government in order to join this hypothetical galactic/universal government. Here lies the problem. If we try to found a new government, there could be two ways we would go: war or peace. War because if there is the development of a common government, there would be conflict with how to develop it, along with other conflicts such as racism and such. Will this happen, if intelligent life does find us and add us to this hypothetical galactic government? Or would we simpl…

One thing I've noticed of this site is a lack of FAQ pinned articles. I oft wonder why? On one side of the coin answering questions repeatibly generates threads for discussion. On the other side is site FAQs should be based on cooperative efforts. I would like to measure the sites interest in developing numerous FAQ articles, I can certainly assist in Cosmology and particle physics, possibly in relativity. Lol although my biggest weakness is keeping them short and brief. Would the site support such effort? (These two articles were originally intended as FAQ style, but got rather lengthy, though informative) http://cosmology101.wikidot.com/redshift…

Now this question needs an answer! Now imagine yourself as a rock, and there are three options that might or might not happen. 1. You either get picked up by someone and get thrown into the river. 2. You either get picked up and that someone keeps it. 3. You either get completely ignored and is left alone till another someone shows up. That someone is an alien or in this case not human... This is possible that there might be 'advanced' alien life somewhere in this universe that is very big. The word universe is latin for: Uni - Infinite, Verse - World Let's wait it out!

  21. How can I become more grateful of the things I do have instead of being envious of the things I don't have?

  22. Hi all. Tell what you learned from grannys. They can be very useful. And sharing is good... To start: If you get burned, fire or hot surface, steam or whatever, apply as soon as possible egg whites to the skin area. If dries, keep applying more for a while, pain will diminish. Will not blister nor leave scars and will heal sooner I have confirmed it in minor burns and a major steam burn from a hot automobile radiator venting. Perhaps someone can explain the effect of pure protein. I do not.
