Ethics

Discussion of ethical topics relating to science, medicine, religion, and so on.

  1. Do you think someone can be spiritual even if they pay someone to kill an animal so they can eat meat? What if that person is a millionaire or billionaire and donating to charities all over the world yet still support the suffering of people, animals, and the environment by eating meat? Let's say that a rich person donates to charities that help with climate change and world hunger. Is this person using his/her money to relieve the symptoms but not necessarily getting to the root of the problem? What do you all think?

  3. Okay, this topic is pretty broad, but given how invasive technology has become and the number of hackers there are (more every day) and how easy it has become to hack phones and computers (just about anyone can do it these days) there is an increasing chance that this could happen to you. Also, remember that hackers tend to associate with each other and create groups to protect themselves from revenge. Say you found out you were being stalked by people who traced you through either your phone or computer. You know these things about them: 1. There is more than one person involved. 2. They know where you live. They know where you work. They hacked your …

https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting How many times have I seen an American movie that fires massive amounts of ammo, at the protagonist/bad guy, in the futile attempt to stave off/kill the protagonist/bad guy, only for that protagonist/bad guy to be be stopped/killed by the guile/intelligence of the hero, mostly without ammo. America, are you trying to be obtuse?

I myself do not like that man. He is perfect and ideal to be charged. Last week I heard on television how they said that a woman was released after 23 years in prison because the judges and jurors were wrong and the witnesses were just... It is easy to believe that Weinstein committed those crimes, but at the same time I would not be surprised if those women invented it because they just did not like him for various reasons. Can you think of any changes that would help improve..?

  6. It is reasonably common for health professionals to make medical decisions on behalf of a patient who is deemed incapable of making such decisions due to deteriorating mental health. Next of kin are usually consulted, but for this hypothetical scenario assume there is no next of kin for whatever reason. In this scenario it is deemed medically necessary to perform surgery, but it is a private setting so the patient will have to pay. Health insurance won't cover it for whatever reason. Can the health professionals force the patient to pay? Do the courts need to get involved in this decision since money is involved? I'm interested in how this would work in th…

I became a vegetarian roughly a year and a half ago, where I'd been toying with the idea for much longer. Strangely, although I've not indoctrinated myself, pass not eating meat, I find the idea of eating any meat completely repulsive, albeit I've only cut it out of my diet. There is no other influence as far as I'm aware of to trigger such a response :). I chose to be a veggie for environmental impact reasons and also are lack of knowledge when it comes to sentience. So, just wondering what you sciencey types choose as a diet choice, and why ?

I'm pro designer babies, we could become the perfect species after modifying ourselves enough; smart, good looking, athletic etc basically we'd skip millennia of evolution so why not? playing god in my opinion is a bad answer because you could say the same for curing illnesses or not curing them so allowing people to live or die or selective breeding perhaps, both are very common. (I hope the poll works)

Say this pedophile, as revolting as he may be, doesn't cause the child physical pain, opting instead to just caress her or something. Should he really spend a veritable eternity getting raped up the ass for this. You see this is one of the reasons I think the Illuminati of the German Police Force should been dismantled and disarmed and shamed. Other than the fact that most children don't mind getting rubbed down enough to report it, the majority of child molesters claim they don't harm children physically. According to the FBI, only one out of ten cases of child sexual abuse is reported to law enforcement. So all a child has to do is fight back and mo…

I know this seems like a stupid question, but bear with me on this subject. Why is it that war is universally recognized as a tragic concept and yet wars are still being fought for "our countries individual pride or protection?" Should war still be accepted even when it could be as an act of self defence or preservation over diplomacy? If religions (such as Christianity) prohibit murder and yet war is still acceptable, then could war be used as a loop hole in religious belifs that murder is acceptable?

  15. Hi Everyone I am beginning to lose count of the times that I have had to stop watching a film or TV series I was enjoying because a dreadful scene of torture came up. Last night it happened while I was watching the second episode of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. I will not be watching any more of it. Is this really what most people want? The only emotional response I have towards torture is deep horror and the feeling that my blood has become very cold in a very unpleasant way. I am not in any way whatsoever entertained by it. I suspect that there are some people who think I have something wrong with me because of this. Well I don't. I actually believe t…

  22. I often see the word "bigotry" thrown around in discussions of groups differences, invariably thrown by those who believe there are no differences, at those who believe there are. It seems to be wielded as some kind of ultimate debate ending logical bind, as if "bigotry" was the greatest affront to the scientific method. Or is it just meaningless name calling by pseudoscientific political ideologues without any evidence on their side, which they have to resort to due to their absolute incompetence at discussing the issue scientifically? Perhaps here we can hash out a clear definition. Here's a case from this very website: Now I always thought bigotry meant be…

  24. Yes. I posted part of a chapter of the bible book of Revelation. That's called looking for trouble. The Revelation contains all the troubles of the world right now, with more to come, all the poison lakes and rivers and oceans .. the scorching and firey deaths of Global Warming .. the coming nuclear war from the angels in the Euphrates River running through Syria, Iraq, Iran .. one third of men killed in one hour by fire and smoke and brimstone. It's there in the Revelation. But satan doesn't want it talked about because 'fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.' Someone might repent, get their soul saved, go to heaven when the missile fly and the bombs fall. S…
