Hello everybody and everyone... A December 2014 report about thyroid cancer saw 86 cases among 298,577 young people under 18 in the Fukushima prefecture. Lacking a reference report for Japanese people, I compared it with a French study http://www.invs.sante.fr/fr/content/download/7760/52112/version/1/file/bilan_cancer_thyroide.pdfpages 31-32 that saw 224 cases among 11 million French children under 14, that would extrapolate proportionally to 26ppm up to 18 years, or 8 expected cases amont 298,577 people. That discrepancy would be very significant, but The criteria of cancer may differ The populations differ genetically and culturally If I compare now with…

Seems I always tell my life's stories here, but if someone can shed some light, I'd really appreciate it. My problem with obesity started before I was a year old. My mother used to state with pride, that I doubled my weight within 6 weeks after I was born. I went to doctor after doctor. I asked them to check my thyroid - they checked T4 and it was always borderline "low-normal". For years I was told that my weight problem arose from me not being able to push myself away from the table. In early 2002 my husband was dx'd with diabetes, and was referred to an endocrinologist. Since we were both overweight, I decided to move to his endocrinologist, in the hope…

Hello everybody, First, I don't know whether his question belongs in a mechanical subforum or a medical subforum, as the questions contain both elements: If a human tissue shrinks, it is considered due to the amount of elastin and collagen content within the tissue. If you measure the elastin content (for example by measuring the amount of desmosine), is there a way to predict how far and fast the tissue would shrink?

To me, the question, can anyone become smarter, is like asking, can anyone increase their lung capacity. Unless you're a professional runner, and even then, this can be debated, you aren't close to realizing your potential. I believe that every human brain has a potential, and also, a set limit to which they can no longer improve, but this limit is completely unknown to most of us. Many people would say, there is no limit to the human mind, that it is like time and never reaching it's limit, but in this case, I would strongly disagree because time does have a limit (obviously). It's limited to it's parts which keep going forward. It doesn't increase it's potential an…

I've read too much calcium (Hypercalcemia) encourages Calcitonin secretion, which is linked in various studies to inhibiting GH. Is it possible too much calcium would stunt growth? I drink on average 1.6 cups (400 milliliters) of Coca-Cola per day. Is this too much? What is a safe rate of Coca-Cola consumption? Here is my basic knowledge of biology. Too much sugar in the bloodstream I don't think is that harmful, as there are many different types of sugars. However, the type of sugars in Coke are processed simple sugars (monosaccharides). How is this harmful as opposed to sugar from, say, fruits? Can too much sugar lead to diabetes or is diabetes influence more by genes?

  9. Hi everyone An aspect of my course of energy and metabolism is the influence of cyanides in our body. This is what I've written down during the course, which is confirmed by Wikipedia: Cyanide ion binds with the iron-cation in cytochrome oxidase complex (cytochrome a-a3), inhibiting its possibility to continue the electron transport (the reaction 2 cyt a3-Fe2+ + 1/2 O2 + 2H+ <--> 2 cyt a2-Fe3+ + H2O is inhibited), leading to suffocation. I understand that the blockage of this electron transport inhibits a normal ATP-production, leading e.g. to a reduced or completely inhibited function of the Na-K-ATPase, eventually leading to depolarization, eventu…

Hello, I have a simple question and do not mean to be ignorant, because I am not in the medical field. Here is the problem. Suppose a patient had a bladder infection and antibiotics could not be used because of allergies. So there would be no easy way to treat their infection. Or is there. Ultraviolet light kills bacteria and viruses, so if you were to treat the bladder once a month by inserting a ultraviolet light through a cathedore ; making sure to kill the bacteria without burning the bladder. I don't know what type of device would fit into the bladder. Maybe a fiber optic cable device with a mirror that folds to fit then expands reflecting the light. …

Has there ever been a recognised phenomenon where, when someone has taken a medication, it didn't have any effect because the patient didn't expect it to work? For example, expecting an antidepressant to not work, and so it doesn't - even after having taken it for 3 months...?

  18. The exact nature of sensory integration and coordination with the external physical environment represents one of the most fundamental questions of biology. Many animals are born with visual structures intact, yet never with fully developed visual acuity. Humans are no exception. So how exactly do organisms learn to measure and navigate their external environment? Eyesight does not provide the proper baseline "learning" mechanism, e.g. a fundamental feedback response that can be measured and evaluated and encoded. Yet it seems the fascination with HD tv's and "selfie" technology has completely taken over basic questions of biology; and science has been hijacked …

  19. Hello forum community, As a pre-med/pre-science student, I have found that reading literature, writing reflectively on the content in summary, and being able to synthesize data and findings to identify knowledge gaps and develop "research-able" questions are fundamental to the thinking required in medical school and beyond. In fact, I have written two successful grant applications in the materials sciences which apply the same rules. My question here, anyhow, was directed to synthesizing a review paper for the biological or biomedical sciences (I feel less experienced/underqualified to write a clinical review paper that's meaningful). I understand what goes into…

Hi all, My question is this: Can we ever hope to fully understand the brain when the most powerful tool in our possesion is the brain itself? Also, much of the brain is inaccessable to us consciously. Can a system (such as the brain) be "pointed" at itself? I'm struggling to phrase this correctly... but you guys are intelligent enough to get my gist.

  25. Hi all, 1. I was thinking last night of an awful situation I had a couple years back where I had drunk far too much alcohol.. then I thought: surely there's a better way of flushing it (without radical medical procedures like stomach pumping) out of the body than just "waiting it out" whilst someone is in such a state.. If Bob is highly intoxicated with alcohol after a good night out (that happened to go a little turbo..), could he consume a diuretic substance in addition to a good quantity of water to catalyse the flushing process? (Kind of a #2 but related to alcohol): Also, would use of a stimulant help reduce some of the alcohol's depressant effects? If both…
