  2. Perhaps my search of the literature has been inadequate, but as best as I can tell, the situation with metronidazole is that it was conclusively demonstrated to be carcinogenic in animals, genotoxic in humans in vitro and in vivo and "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" and in spite of this, the drug continues to be in wide use with seemingly no urgency to run a study to settle the question of its carcinogenic potential in humans. Am I missing something or is this insane? You can maybe say there's no evidence of carcinogenicity in humans, but absence of evidence is not evidence that it's not carcinogenic, not if adequately powered, well designed st…

  6. What is the difference between circulatory system and cardiovascular system? According to my knowledge, both are the names of same system of human body. Cardiovascular is more anatomic term and circulatory is more physiologic term. So the system to which anatomists refer as cardiovascular system, physiologists will call it circulatory system. For more details on my explanation of cardiovascular system vs. Circulatory system, see my blog post "Circulatory System vs. Cardiovascular System"

  7. Hello everyone, I have this friend who has a slight strabismus. His eyes look away from me when speaking, but that means he is actually looking at me. I can understand how these people, brains may learn to ignore certain images and adapt to this condition. But how can his eyes physically look away from me, and still see me. Also in a case where both eyes are crossed, wouldn't it be almost impossible to see properly. Thank you

  9. Hello everyone, You usually get pulmonary oedema in conditions such as Left heart failure, where there is increased back pressure in pulmonary vasculature, which in turn increase hydrostatic pressure and then fluid in alveoli giving rise to the condition. Now my question is this fluid in alveoli is a transduate it does not contain blood, however the classic symptom of this condition is pink frothy sputum which indicates blood. Why is this the case. Thanks

I've always been told to wear socks when walking around the house bare-foot because I'm going to get sick - even when I'm standing on carpeted area. I've always walked around the house bare-foot, and even outside sometimes and never had any problems with it, yet I'm still told it's not a good idea. Is there any evidence to prove this idea that cold feet will cause you to get sick? From my personal experience this has never been the case.

Is it healthy to swallow your own burp? What if you swallow someone else's burp? Often while I eat I take a mouthful of water and while the water is in my mouth I burp. The gas enters the mouth from the throat and I assume the gas mixes with the water. If I open my mouth, would the gas escape through the water? Whenever this happens I never feel any bubbling sensation in the water nor do I feel any burp escaping, suggesting that the gas may be trapped underneath the water. I have no choice but to swallow the water with my burp trapped in this water. I could spit the water out but I often don't want to waste water or I don't have anywhere to spit it out.

Is the mighty dollar really so powerful as to seduce the world with such a drug and are we all equally culpable; given our collective need to accumulate imagined wealth?

  18. I work from home so during this whole ordeal the world's been having with COVID, I've been blissfully and irresponsibly ignoring it, but now I've been called up to take the Pfizer vaccine, so I actually have to educate myself a bit. I've been watching this video on data from Israel about side effects associated with the Pfizer vaccine (which I'll link to at the bottom) and they mention severe side effects (but don't specify beyond that), albeit very rare. Now, I'm thinking, the vaccine has at this point been tested on a large number of people, but without long term followup, whereas the virus has been "tested" on an enormous amount of people and been given a dec…

Inquiring minds want to know, a fatal dose of what drugs will it take for the express purpose of causing the immediate death of the subject? I want to know the drugs that will cause the easiest death, rather than other methods which are considered to be more painful. I know the subject could be applied in a broad sense to suicide, but I'm just curious, I do not have the intention of killing myself.

  21. Started by Marat,

I was living in England when the world-wide hysteria over the 'date rape' drug GBH first seized hold of public consciousness. Officials in the British government were alarmed that their laws did not permit them at the time to prohibit the manufacturing, sale, distribution, and use of the drug, so being naughty, I thought I would buy some and try it. I found it really salty -- so salty in fact that I couldn't understand how anyone could possibly slip it into someone's drink without the person noticing it, unless it were tomato juice already spiced with Worcestershire Sauce. I also found that while it made me slightly sleepy, it took about an hour, even at the highest…

My tonsils are a bit weird in appearance.. they have a few shallow circular holes in them, in which this gunky white stuff accumulates. I can dislodge the stuff with a Q-Tip, and it smells absolutely horrible, like rotting leather. I try gargling mouthwash but the next morning I wake up with a painful sore throat. In fact, the only illnesses I ever seem to have involve the throat region. What's wrong with my tonsils?

What I hate most is perhaps people making money by fabricating ridiculous ailments, manufacturing ridiculous products is no where near as ethically wrong. Examples of these somewhat ridiculous ailments proclaimed by the medical society are ADD (attention deficit disorder), CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome), depression, and dyslexia. To the medical society the universe is perfect and so should every human being, anytime a little thing is wrong with more than one person they call it a condition. These guys, these pretentious professionals declaring such flabbergasting ailments do not realize they are perhaps the least competitive and productive of all professionals. Engineers,…

This is kind of an idiotic question, and I really don't belong on this forum as I'm only fourteen and have next to no knowledge of Science, but is it possible to see a certain kind of color blindness using something, or to erase color blindness? Because someone I know sees green as yellow and yellow as green and I want to see what they see, or for them to see normally. I know there's EnChroma glasses they can wear to, I think, correct their vision.. but I don't know. Sorry if I sound stupid..

Hello, I'm looking for substitutes to caffeine. A friend told me that vegetable juices raise one's alkaline levels. Raised alkaline levels are supposed to increase oxygen levels and higher energy levels. Is any of this true? Are there other substitutes to caffeine for raising one's energy levels and alertness?
