Hi everyone ! I started research at university this year in the field of chemistry, and especially organic chemistry. I'm fluent in english (french is my main language) and I have no problem to communicate my results and problems with the staff. However, writing papers is another thing and I noticed a lack of skills for building nice-looking but efficient sentences. Do you have any resource for self-learning and improving the writing skills for the scientific field (no need to learn how to write poems) ? Thanks a lot and have a good day !

Hi, I'm probably going to sound like an idiot asking this, hopefully it isn't too generalised as a question. I also hope I'm posting this in the right section of the forum-what sort of mathematical skills and disciplines are commonly used in entomological fields? I'm just asking as I'm very interested in hopefully having a career in the future in something to do with entomology. I'm also asking as I don't currently have the best math skills, but I am studying at the moment and hope to get better with maths as I progress with said studies. Anyway, thanks for looking, just thought I'd ask out of curiosity.

Now, I'm not sure if anyone has tried to compile such a list, but I'd like to suggest a joint effort to compile a collection of several books, resources, websites and the like, that allow you to learn about all sorts of things. I think I'm not alone here when I say I want to learn a MILLION things, but I don't want to get 30 different degrees. I want to study, and research and learn and experiment, but without having to pay thousands of dollars in tuition. I'm looking for things like khanacademy or Udemy. Youtube channels like Crash Course. Good books like the ones they usually have us buy for college. A compilation made by learners, for learners.…

My 11 year old is taking college precalculus this semester and will likely take Calculus I next semester. She is mostly interested in Cosmology as a career and I want to find a summer program that will encourage that interest in the topic; entertainment is more important than challenging her intellect. She is already pushing herself hard enough during the school year, so I want her to see the summer camp as a reward for working hard this year, but I also want her to see the possibilities of a future in science. Most of the science camps for kids her age are below her level so she is just bored. I'm wondering if anyone on here has found a really high class summer camp …

Hi, I want to run an experiment and to do so I need to create something that will function as a semi-permeable membrane. It must let water through but not oil. I’ve looked about a lot but all options seem excessively expensive. If anyone knows a cheap option, or a way to build something that would work it would be much appreciated. Thanks

https://phys.org/news/2019-06-physics-life-d-universe.html Researcher shows physics suggests life could exist in a 2-D universe by Bob Yirka , Phys.org James Scargill, a physicist at the University of California, has written a paper reporting that the laws of physics allow for the existence of a life-supporting two-dimensional universe. MIT's Technology Review has reviewed the paper and found that the work does show that such a 2+1 universe could exist. Because we live in three-dimensions, it is difficult for us to envision a universe in which the third dimension does not exist—or one in which there is a fourth or fifth dimension. But philosophers and …

I need some direction with research I want to do. For background, I am a junior in high school and part of a program from which I got two publications into the NCBI for isolating proteins from a plant called duckweed and doing some rudimentary bioinformatic analysis on it. I also had the chance to 3-D print the protein with its important domains/ligands highlighted. I want to take what I have (a DNA sequence and extensive knowledge of the structure) to make a claim and write a full fledged research paper. Without further lab experiments, I am not sure about what direction I can take what I have to write a proper research paper. Any tips/advice would be appreciated. Also I…

The director of my masters course implied that I should choose my research project (thesis) based on how quickly I want my name in a journal. It got me thinking about the benefits of having a publication on your CV so early in your career - and if there really are any? Do prospective employers actually look favourably upon candidates who have a publication history? Would you be 'worse off' on the job market if you graduated your masters without a publication - especially if others on your course DID graduate with one? Or is publication history mostly only relevant if you want to continue in academia? Is choosing a research area based on how quickly/easily it can get pubis…

Is it possible to study on your own and apply to write an exam only in the university. For example I'm studying quantum mechanics equivalent to the quantum mechanics module in a university and then I apply to write exam for quantum mechanics instead of sitting the whole semester studying the course, is it possible to just write an exam and get the credit.

Recently a super massive black hole has discovered by the scientists of the event horizon telescope . The name of the back hole is Messier 87. A black hole usually absorbs the light so we can't see it. But it has an event horizon which we can see. It's theory is given by Stephen Hawkings. We can see a black hole and it's event horizon by "Hawkings radiation". More about "Hawkings radiation" go to https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawking_radiation&ved=2ahUKEwj0j--d9tvhAhWaXSsKHQwbDXsQFjAOegQICRAu&usg=AOvVaw1JubLngqjOiptxbOgCJTJ-

This is a pair of posts of mine that seemed to fit well here, and I didn't see the boon reviewed in other posts. The book itself is a reflection on setting up novel science education systems in two North American Universities. Part 1: Synopsis of the content Part 2: Criticism, and comparison to another local program

Hello Everyone! I'm new to the forum and thought I should introduce myself. I'm in Denver Colorado and majoring in Biology/Botany. I will be starting my junior year in Fall 2019. I joined the forum hoping to get some more information, network a little, and learn about the industry. My first goal is to redo my resume as I was a service tech prior to going to school. Does anyone have any suggestions or industry preferred templates? I know everyone will have an opinion but I should start somewhere. Cheers, Andrew

Hello, I have my nephews this weekend and I am doing a bit of research before they get here because I would like to be able to guide them through a science experiment that they’ve been asking me to help them with for ages. The experiement is the reaction that occurs when Aluminum is exposed to mercury. They are wanting to recreate the exact reaction they saw on YouTube. I’ve got all the materials to do it (in theory) and luckily I decided to conduct a test run before they arrived. My problem is I can’t get the reaction to start at all. I’ve tried to contacting the person that made the video but I haven’t heard back yet. 1.) Here is…

Hello, I will be attending college soon and wanted to ask someone preferably in one of these fields, which do I choose? Ultimately I want to end up in aerospace engineering, however I have heard this can be very limiting to fresh college graduates as a position in aerospace may not be available. At the same time, if the position should be available, would it give a pretty big edge over a Mech E major? What about dual majors or certificates offered by some colleges? On a side note, what are the best colleges for engineering currently?
