Thousands of members of the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon have been injured when handheld pagers they use to communicate with one another suddenly exploded without warning this afternoon. https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/lebanon-pagers-attack-hezbollah/index.html The wave of blasts in Beirut and other areas began around 15.45 local time (1345 GMT), causing mass panic and many hundreds of signficant injuries. The casualties reportedly include Mojtaba Amani, the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon. According to Reuters, Hezbollah spokesmen say the incident constitutes the biggest security breach of their communications infrastructure in the history of …

Sorry if this has already been posted, but this has been bugging me for a while and a search didn't turn up anything. We keep talking about alternative energy sources everywhere when there is a constant energy around us all the time. What I want to know is, could gravity be used as a feasible source of energy?

I have been having discusses about different propulsion system looking for ways to bring the space cost down. And after looking at the different propulsion system it seems chemical propulsion is the only option --- Anti-matter ( very very very costly (way more than chemical propulsion) cannot be controlled or stored has fuel. Also hard to make you have smash atoms and it only last for second or so the anti-matter If there was breakthrough where we can make lots and lots of anti-matter very cheap and can control it and store it and use it has fuel it be banned for use in , earth thus only used for deep space has a size of rock would destroy all of New York.…

n 2022 the BBC filmed inside the OceanGate Titanic submersible that has now gone missing during a dive to see the wreck of the Titanic, which lies on the seafloor about 12,500 feet below the surface, and around 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-us-canada-65958697 In the screenshot below, Stockton Rush the Chief Executive of OceanGate who is believed to be one of five people missing aboard the submersible is seen explaining how it works “It’s got one button, and that’s it. We run the sub with this game controller - It’s made by Logitec, but it’s basically a Sony PS style controller” he says - What could possi…

When new sources of energy are being proposed there is often an impetus to subsidize them. Currently we have a lot of wind farms being subsidized. I am of the opinion that this is pure theatre and self delusion. If the energy source cannot survive without subsidy then it is clearly not producing more energy that it consumes. This discussion often gets bogged down when people try to redefine the word 'subsidy' and include things like tax rebates in the definition. So I will use a definition here - a subsidy is a net flow of energy into a system from outside. I will also add that as a corollary to this the Cost of something is a very good measure of the…

It has been discovered that worlds petroleum source is going to end within 100 years.. and if the consumption rate is going to be high then 100 years will be shortened to 50years.. so the need of an alternate source is necessary.. which is going to replace petroleum products??

Was anyone watching this? It took a long time for the news to even mention that firefighters were trying to get close. It took a half hour for ONE fire hose to start on the fire. Can anyone figure out what is wrong with the performance of the Paris Fire Dept? I suspect that the fire trucks had trouble getting through barriers for terrorists. Why not scramble tanker planes to drop water on the fire? Were there any local fire hydrants? Can anyone figure out how to prevent this happening to other historical buildings? Maybe install a sprinkler system, I don't know.

Here is the idea. If an air conditioner was powerful enough, with intake and exhaust designed properly, you can remove Coronavirus (or any virus) from the air by the A/C moving the air faster than normal in an upward direction. You want the air to circulate so fast that if someone sneezes the water droplets will remain inside the room only a few seconds before it is sucked out the ceiling vent. For cooling the room, the idea is cool air enters the room near the floor and the warmer air exits through a ceiling vent, the "return." For heating the room you would also introduce warm air through low floor-vents, then the exhaust exits through the return in the ceilin…

Majority of Western European countries have outlined the date when they will prohibit cars based on internal combustion on their roads. Typically these dates range from 2025 to 2040. The similar initiatives are attempted in India and China. I have hard time to believe it is realistic. Do you? What technology are they going to implement to make it real? Maybe what they've meant is plug-in hybrids rather than all-electric? https://money.cnn.com/2017/09/11/autos/countries-banning-diesel-gas-cars/index.html

Could the advent of long rage ramjet powered artillery shells, Laser point defense, nuclear power, and light weight armor as used in aircraft carriers be used to bring back the battleship? New technologies would seem to indicate that a powerful battleship platform could again be an important part of the Navy, the idea of either redeploying old battleships and or redesigning the old battleships has been around a long time but vulnerability to air power and missiles has always stopped the idea from fruition. New technologies could turn that around. This development might be part of this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy_(countermeasure)

I am attempting to build a working Battery-free flashlight flash light. It would be powered by coils around a pen tube with a rod magnet inside. When you shake the tube the magnet goes up and down reversing polarity inducing a charge in the coils. The only problem is I can’t seem to get more than 0.9 volts out of the thing. I need at LEAST 3 volts. Not to mention that the current output is pitiful. The coils I wound are PERFECT. The layers are on top of each other with no overlaps. There are somewhere between 500 and 1500 turns. I can’t even begin to guess how many. So does anybody have any ideas? I have attached a schematic.

Global Positioning systems are extremely accurate typically <10m, assuming there is good satellite coverage. Satellites have both high and low orbit, Inmarsat coverage is particularly poor. I would like to start a discussion ref the reliability and accuracy of the various GPS networks. I am particularly interested in how the accuracy, or time, of the clocks may be affected if they are in different orbits around the planet, or at different altitudes or orbiting in different directions. For example if in orbit around the equator, at higher latitudes or perhaps orbiting over the poles. The reason the question occurs to me is that I use GPS in navigation off sh…

Dear visionary inventors, megalomaniac engineers and audacious explorers, Chemical rocket engines aren't up to our desire to hop in the Solar system: go quickly to Mars, deviate Earth-threatening objects, and so many more missions. We need a higher ejection speed to save propellant mass, but this takes more energy than chemical reactions bring. One possibility is to tap Sunlight instead of transporting the energy. I suggest - as others did - to directly heat the propellant with Sunlight. Converting first to electricity would enable even higher ejection speeds, but direct heating is energy-efficient, so for a long weak thrust, the collector area is feasible - smaller…

Overheard a conversation about car tires. One person said that instead of air they just use Nitrogen. Why use nitrogen, what is the difference? Could we therefore fill our car tires with helium to make them lighter, or even .... float? What challenges would a helium filled tire face?

There was an article today on physorg.com detailing a long list of limitations spelling out a limited future to nuclear energy, if you didn't already know that. The exercising of great care won't be much of a factor when you consider the sheer volume of energy used worldwide compared to the limited amounts of reactor fuel (unless you plan on filtering out the few ppm of it from the entire ocean.) 375 GW Total energy produced by nuclear reactors 15 TW Total energy consumption worldwide 15,000 Total number of nuclear reactors required to meet worldwide demand Plus, the long list of dangers, hurdles and setbacks really just contributes to an effort in futilit…

in pure mathematics we commonly use >3D spaces. there will be many many types which are formulated. but I do not know whether we use any of them as an actual usage in life of science. I see at this document https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert_space hilbert spaces are being used at physics discipline and/or electric electronic engineering. I request anyone to provide any sample of direct usage of >3D space(s) as evidence if there exists or how its usage is. (note only formulizations are not acceptable, usage is required.)

I had just had a discussion with a friend of mine about whether a piston's motion stops before it changes direction. He argued that since it pivots on a circular motion from the bottom that it didn't. I say that if he was talking about the piston itself, then it did. Since a piston only goes up and down in the sleeve, then it would have to stop in order to go the opposite direction. I just wanted to get some of your thoughts. Does an object have to stop in order to move in the opposite direction? I believe the answer is yes.

I don't know a lot about electrical engineering but I'm trying to design a simple circuit system. Lets say I have a source generating electricity in a circuit and say just as a random number 30 amps from one second of electrical current are stored in a capacitor. How would I then release that electrical energy more slowly to power a small light at 10 amps a second for 3 seconds?

What to expect ? Without a driver being of mandatory presence in the vehicle, and if so, cheat placing a concrete block on the seat and send it its way ? Punch a button to bypass a valet assisted parking ? Send the car by itself to pick up kids from school ? Exit the car at the office building and send it to find a parking place ? Call the car on a smart phone to pick you up at the workplace main door ? Arrive to work place and send the car back home for the wife to go somewhere ? Send the car to the hardware store with a purchase list and get the goodies by your garage door ? Send the car to the mechanic for oil change/whatever and back when done ? Go ahe…

If you watch CNN about NASA payload is always the problem. The government is always looking at new material to make it strong and lightweight.. Well fuel is big problem it TAKES more fuel than the payload !!! I'm sure in the future we will have strong and lightweight material and advances in chemistry and nanotechnology will help. But the big problem is fuel .It takes more fuel than the payload . Ion rockets or plasma rockets have low thrust .So as of right now, they could never lift anything from earth do to the low thrust . Not sure about nuclear or fusion but I think they have low thrust too.Well Ion rockets , plasma rockets , nuclear or fusion have long…

hi; I have sent a letter to harvard and said them that I cancelled all considerations across this university. according to my contention the recommendation letter is quite fault requirement to make it mandatory. I respect everyone's ideas. But I strictly criticized harvard and cancelled the consideration. There exist some details. nature is in silence. as I understand they are willing to take articles from me. But I need economic support. this is unique necessity. I do not need anything else (MSc ,PhD any of these is not the thing which I am looking for.) because I believe I have ability to learn by myself at first and moreover ,while believe and I am willing to d…
