Can anybody tell me what the estimated total displacement of all ships and other watercraft is and what the effect on ocean levels would be if all shipping were removed from the Earth's oceans and waterways?

  3. i have two plasma balls (the cool plastic sphere things with the purple lightning inside that goes to your hand when you touch it) and a touch lamp (turns on in three brightness stages when you touch it). when i got the first plasma ball i turned it on and noticed a couple things. 1. my radio became very unhappy. nothing but static, no volume control, clock counting down by minutes... very strange. 2. my touch lamp ceased to be a touch lamp. it is now a regular lamp only without an on off switch. when you plug it in, its on, when you unplug it, its... im gonna assume i dont have to explain that one... can someone explain to me what exactly happened to cause e…

MIT did a study a while back regarding tailgaiting and traffic jams. I can’t seem to find the actual report, but it appears looking at the graphic that the analysis was confined to a single lane. My hypothesis is that this effect is compounded in a multi-lane scenario, based on my observations driving in DC traffic. An additional source of trouble here may be people that are obligated to change lanes, but have to wait for a gap in traffic, thus slowing down their lane. The tendency of people to try and switch lanes to the faster moving lane may also exacerbate the issue. I would also expect that a sudden unsafe lane change (cutting someone off) could exhibit sim…

Is anyone else into Trail Cams? The idea of spying on wildlife is fascinating to me, watching their behavior when they don't know anyone is watching can be very interesting but there are also some trail cam photos that are... not sure the words I should use but they are are either weird beyond belief and portray unknown phenomena or are hoaxed in ways i would love to know how it was done. A lot like magic tricks, you know there has to be a catch but the trick is not evident at all. This one is pretty good, mostly just candid shots of wildlife. If I come across any of the weird ones that seem to need explanation I'll post them. There is one of a little girl in the w…

I have been on train for 1 day. When I finally reached my destination and came to home, I felt a little shaky. When I sit quietly and try to read a book, it seems like I am still in train and I still get shakes and jerks. The shakes vanishes on the second day of return. Any explanation how we get such shakes?

  8. What exactly is trance? And why does it appeal to some (or the esoteric few)? Is it the complete stabilization of emotional response, neither diffident nor bold, neither hot nor cold, neither perceptive nor ignorant? How is this state of "bliss" defined in terms of hormones and neurotransmitters? eg) when we are angry or agitated then this balance is disturbed which retroactively disturbs the balance even further. Similarly excessive shyness and aloofness are not sociable traits. In both these cases the energy balance is disturbed and there are kinetic vectors that drive an individual to anti-social behavior. Is there some nascent harmony latent in each indiv…

Many household appliances get power from the mains via a transformer. My question is that when a transformer is plugged in and the application turned off is there still current flowing through the primary? Yes: then there'd be an induced current in the secondary, where does that current go if the app is off? And it'd be a big waste of electricity. No: then the switch needs to go all the way from the appliance to the primary of the transformer (which for some appliances there doesn't seem to be a wire doing this).

My friend has this theory that transgender people can normalize their gender by taking hormones of their assigned gender. I have told him why it is untrue but he wouldn't believe it because he thinks psychology is soft science and he has his own theory on why. And he speculates that taking hormones for their assigned gender is already happening but just not reported. This might sound absurd but can anyone offer a clear explanation on why he is wrong? I can't provide one that is satisfying for him.

I was talking to my housemate and he raised a point I wasn't certain of how to explain, about how Earth's atmosphere was transparent. I mentioned about how the particles in gases were so widely dispersed compared to other particles, and he mentioned that other gases can block light... So I commented that eyes must have evolved to take advantage of nitrogen's transparency to what we term "visible light" when he reminded me that oxygen and carbon dioxide are transparent to those same frequencies too. So how do I respond to the fact that nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide all being transparent to the same wavelength frequencies of the EM spectrum when other gase…

i had this idea about 2 years ago and think about it now and then. As of now its just a dream. My thought is transporting electricity through the air for ex: like radio waves as opposed to a conductor like a power line. If this were possible the possibilities would be endless. Anyone have any idea(s) on how this would work?

Could trash be burned, and then the co2 and ash compressed into diamonds? And then, if it worked, the compression chambers could be made of said diamonds for superior efficiency of compression. I know I must have made a logical flaw. Otherwise someone would have thought of this. It's just so simple.

"Sometimes petrified trees are found standing upside down running through many rock layers. They certainly didn’t grow upside down and the layers cannot be different ages. Hallow`en 2moro = here`s a few neat ideas for the night and not all require a detailed chem knowledge Instead of using ordinary candles, why not make things a little different and have Green Fire! you`ll need a spirit burner (no pun intended), some methylated spirits (not alcy ghosts!) and some Boric acid (not Boris). in a heat proof glass jar pour in 250ml of meths and then add 3 teaspoons of boric acid powder, put a loosely fitting lid on top and place the jar in a bowl of boiling hot water, stir occasionaly until all the boric acid powder dissolves. let it cool an then either store it or pour it into your spirit burner, instead of candle yellow, or meths lig…

  19. Greetings. How much of it is illusion or how much is a real illusion ? Never seen it before. How does it work ? There is a tiny video in the advertisement. I'm currently using this simple circuit to power an organic LED that I want driving at constant current, using a 330 ohm resistor (so I supply 0.2mA) putting the OLED in the position of RL Now if I want to be able to change the current, I suppose I can just put a variable resistor in there, but what I really want to do is to have a single control that allows me to change the current for a whole load of these circuits with OLEDs in them. I guess I could just put the OLEDs in series, but as I am testing devices, if they're in series and one goes, then they all go and my experiment is ruined. Does anyone know how I might construct such a circuit?

I just searched this on Science Forums and saw it hasn't been mentioned. It should tho. Not sure where to post it also so, this is somewhat Tech Science. I first saw this on NextCNN a couple of months back. It seemed amazing and I wonder what Da Sci Members have to say. ** http://www.defense-update.com/products/t/trophy.htm ** --Stupid site puts the scroll bar on the left-- It pretty much stops incoming projected crap (anything from Missiles to gernades). Developed by some Israeli group. I don't have much to say other than it looks amazing. I can't find the video I saw, but it showed a missile coming near a tank and then just disintegrating. W…

I'm trying to find examples of statements that are neither true or false. The criteria for the statement is that it must state something about the nature of an idea or physical object, and it cannot be something subjective (i.e. feeling, emotion, etc). Can you guys think of any?

  23. Anyone here have an interest in the subject, or are experts in this field? I've had an interest in the creation of "Strong AI" for quite a while, and kept up with the research that is going on with it. Mind you, when I mean Strong AI, I mean computers that can actually think and have consciousness. There is some very interesting stuff and research going on in this field. In a show on Discovery Channel that I saw about 2 years ago, they described the various experiments going on in Japan and in MIT concerned with programming a computer to be sentient. Particularly in Japan, they are trying to program machines that have a genuine personality and emotions. In M…
