Once more we see those celebrating brutally attacked with the promotion of terror and creation of hatred as the primary motivation of terrorist murderers. I cannot begin to imagine the shock and horror of those directly involved nor even those just in the same city; but my heart goes out to them. France - the birthplace of so much that is good and progressive is being recast as a place of callous division, and extreme hatred, but this is not true, will never be true, and the French spirit will not be subverted by violence. I hope that the citizens can remain strong - as they did after the last two, so recent, outrages; and that they continue to refuse to give in to th…

In June the UK will vote on whether to leave the European Union (known to my chagrin as Brexit). My intuition is that this will be bad for science in the UK in particular and Europe in general: collaborations between UK and European institutions will be that little harder, students mobility will be reduced and EU funding for UK universities will be lost. What do you think? Are there any positives to science for leaving. Any negatives i've missed?

To clarify on striker: I'm not being anti-the rights of people to strike, I'm anti the need of anyone to strike - which is to say that civilisation is wrong to exist such that people need to form unions. Housing, healthcare, education and food and beverages should all be free, able to be free because people make the effort to build the correct foundation.

The more I hear about this gorilla getting shot and killed because a 3-year-old was able to climb into the enclosure, the more absurd it seems that it would even be possible for an infant to get in. If an INFANT could get in, then a crazy but agile adult person would have an EASY time getting in there to cause trouble. The zoo seems terribly guilty to not make such a dangerous place less easy to access for anyone. What do you think?

In the wake of Brexit there have been growing calls for London to declare independence from the rest of the UK. I've lived in London for over 10 years and have heard such calls before, but now they seem a little more appealing. If we had a referendum tomorrow I would vote to leave the UK, preferably in favour of the EU. However, i'm aware that this may just be an emotional reaction: also i am not too versed in politics so would like to know some opinions on the matter. Does the idea have potential or is it a non-starter? How would you vote and why?

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/mar/25/ohio-anti-abortion-heartbeat-bill-passes-house Although unlikely to become law due to opposition in the other house and the executive - but still a state's legislators feel that they should, de facto, ban abortions in the state. And before we breathe a sigh of relief that the Senate and Governor are more sane and cogniscent of the rights of fifty percent of the population - it seems the reason that the bill will not pass through to law is that it is so unconstitutional that it may harm future attempts to constrain women's right to choose http://www.acluohio.org/archives/press-releases/ohio-house-passes-dange…

Hello guys, I wanted to try something. Now this is going to seem a little odd, but I think it would be fun. I would like to try and create a "perfect" government. Now obviously it won't be PERFECT to everyone, but it would do the best to make everyone happy, while also presenting the best possible life for the people ruled under it. I.E. protection, education, good living conditions, etc. Now someone once told me that the best way for deciding on whats good is too come up with that desired outcome, and then create the path to that desired outcome. So to get started, I would like it if we came up with our thoughts of a perfect government, then create "laws" and stuff l…

Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman and his wife Beth are ending their hit show Dog and Beth: On the Hunt in an attempt to save the bail industry, which is under attack nationwide. http://www.intouchweekly.com/posts/dog-bounty-hunter-ending-show-87099 It seems the TV show Dog the Bounty Hunter and Dog and Beth On the Hunt are making conservatives hate the bail industry!!! And conservatives what to kill the bail industry!! Why? Because they say it makes it too easy for the bad guys to get out of jail. The conservatives hate the bail industry!!! That it is too easy for the bad guys to get out of jail.

I have watched a german comedy show with the topic TTIP. I guess most Europeans do not want a free trade asociation with the USA. Very shocking for me even that in the USA asbestos is not banned!!! Even more they(us food industries and us-farmers) want GMO food exported to Europe thanks this shitty free trade association. Also very shocking for is that in the USA chicken desinfectized with chorid!Yuck! That's illegal here.

This isn't a would-you-vote-for-him thread. Or a Hillary vs Bernie thread. I'd like to discuss what The Sanders Movement would need to do to achieve the real change Sen. Sanders wants. Because it seems obvious that just being nominated, or even elected, just won't be enough. Some experts and polls think Bernie Sanders has a chance to beat any of the Republicans should he get the nomination. If he does, he admits himself he wants a movement on ideas, rather than a personality contest for candidates. So what do you think his movement needs, not only to get him the nomination, but to help him also gain the Presidency, and reduce the amount of obstructionists in Congress?

Here you can discuss various aspects of the current war in eastern Ukraine as well as post news about it. Quite an important thing happened recently - the new PM of the "Donetsk People's Republc", Alexandr Zakharchenko confirmed recently that training camps for terrorists indeed exist in Russia and that 1200 of them are in the process of being trained: Video removed by moderator Besides that, Igor Strelkov (aka. Girkin), the military leader of separatists, resigned from his post of the defence minister of DPR. There are unconfirmed reports of him being wounded. Girkin is a Russian veteran who fought during the war in Bosnia on the Serbian side, with reports…

What is the balance to be found here? Surely, there are valid arguments to be made about the importance of gun right protections and the ability of people to own them, and also valid arguments to be made that this has become a bit of a national health problem or epidemic that we should seriously consider addressing like we would a disease. To frame the discussion, consider these facts: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/27/guns-children-hospitalizations/4796999/ Every year since 2006 in the US, in a typical year there are 30 mass killings with 137 victims. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/09/16/mass-killi…

A recent study of traffic that determined most of the gridlock on the highways is caused by a few jerks driving badly and forcing everyone else to put on their brakes, robbing the system of its momentum. I say jerks mainly because these folks are completely oblivious to the fact that they ARE the problem they're spending so much time complaining about! They're so wrapped up in themselves and what THEY want, they fail to recognize themselves as the source of it all. When it's pointed out to them, they deny it vehemently, and insist that if everyone drove like them, everything would be fine. Are political conservatives being the tailgaters, lane-changers, and cutter-off…

I really respect this community alot, and love the discussion of scientific ideas...so hopefully this will be my first and last thread on a political topic. People who are advocating public restrooms, locker rooms and showers all seem to use the same scenario in defending their position: "Well, if a pedophile or rapist wanted to molest or rape someone, what's stopping them from walking into a woman's bathroom or shower and doing it?". Firstly, it's illegal, so I think it's going to deter a large percentage of the rapists/ molesters out there. Secondly, its not normalized for a man to walk into a women's restroom or shower. So, when a man does this, it kinda it stic…

hey guys, I was just wondering what was it that caused the Iraq war to occur? How did politicians from various countries manage to manipulate the masses in such a coordinated way as to be successful in fulfilling their objectives of starting a war?? Also, who have been the major beneficiaries of the war?? Did the Iraqi people do enough to prevent other countries from attacking their country? If you were a politician and Iraqi and wanted to prevent such a conflict what would you do? Do ordinary people have any power at all? What was it which lead to so many people being killed and so many people doing nothing? Typically, is it easy to start wars li…

To start, I don't want this to be a giant political argument. I want you guys to post your thoughts on each of the 4 candidates(Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Bernie Sanders. After that who you would probably vote for. Now you don't have to go into extreme detail, but the basic reasoning would be nice. If you post your thoughts on one candidate, please post your thoughts on a candidate on the other side as well, to keep it even. Also, try to use minor opinions, rather than just saying things that don't really add up at all. If two post counteract each other, or one is proven wrong, they really don't point out anything except that you didn't really research e…

Not all advocates for climate action are 'green/left' and not all are anti-nuclear. Not all advocates for nuclear are 'conservative/right' and not all are against strong climate action or oppose renewables. Yet that divide looks strong. Open and direct opposition to nuclear is well known and broadly popular - even if I think distrust of nuclear is not so deeply held that many would abandon it were there compelling need for it. And there is compelling need for low emissions solutions and it seems unreasonable to me that somehow such advocates can have set the energy agenda in the face of it. Something else has to have been going on - or perhaps not going on - for them to h…

Majority of Ukrainians want Ukraine to become a developed, civilized European country. But development of this country is going slowly staggered by internal and external problems. What do you think about implementing some kind of "Marshal Plan" for Ukraine under which developed countries would take most of administration in Ukraine in their hands and develop new administrative system for this country? Also Ukraine may form some kind of Confederacy with more developed country. From what I know about Ukrainians, the vast majority of them would agree to live under foreign administration if it will help bring down corruption and increase level standards drastically.
