Informal poll / pulse check... What do you think would happen if Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders ran on a single ticket in 2016? Landslide or laughing stock? Also, what if they ran against a Rand Paul / Ted Cruz ticket? Thoughts?

Several years ago I heard a woman with a Jaquar complain that sometimes when she went over a significant bump, the car would die (crash safety protection automatically cutting fuel supply) and she would have to pull over, with no power steering, come to a stop with no power brakes, and wait 5 minutes for the system to reset. I often find my car locked when I go to open the back door to put my computer behind the seat. And since it is parked in my garage, I have no need to have it locked, but even if I leave the window open, when I reach in to hit the unlock button it does not function. I have to either put my computer down and get out my keys, or reach in through t…

In the wake of the shootings in Connecticut, the lawmakers in the state of Oklahoma (my home state) are working towards legislature that would allow CLEET-certified teachers and principals to carry firearms at school and school events. http://kfor.com/2012/12/17/rep-wants-teachers-to-carry-guns-at-school/ I am aware of our other thread concerning gun control, but I would like to hear what other members and parents here at SFN feel about this type of action being taken by our lawmakers. Sure, you may not live in Oklahoma, but if our lawmakers here can pass this type of legislation, then governments can pass the same sort of measures regardless where you live. Pers…

Wouldn't psychological and neurological testing of the candidates give voters a better picture of who they actually are than witnessing them trading barbs and insults in their interviews, speeches, and Twitter posts?

New laws in Texas now allow students to carry guns - and in particular concealed handguns - on all campuses. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36948149 Is this not a bit crazy? Will it scare off potential students from other states and indeed international students? What about the saftey of staff? Armed students does not sound great when it comes to dealing with differnces of opinion - say in relation to grades. What are your thoughts on this?

The US earned the title of the "melting pot", and for a time, we were proud of our heritage of assimilating immigrants into our society and benefiting from the strength it gave us. We understood that a blend, a mixture of peoples, ideologies, and cultures gave us a power few nations at the time had. For-profit media practices simplify issues down to a single point. They need to get their messages across quickly in a way that locks in viewers. It seems to manipulate many people to identify themselves in those single aspects; conservative OR liberal, capitalist OR socialist, but never both, the way it really is. Did the media upend the melting pot? Single ideologies do…

While there may be a number of racist cops, I find it hard to believe that these guys go out to find a 'black man to shoot today". Might a lot of it have to do with the fact that cops are actually scared when they make these stops because EVERYBODY is armed in the US ? As a matter of fact both of the two black victims were carrying. Is America's love of guns at the root of the problem ? A lot of good cops have been included with the bad in the eyes of black America and brought about the BLM movement. I now fear that a lot of decent black Americans will be lumped in with the two jackasses who opened fire on the police in Dallas.

(40% from the all 7000 judges @ Turkey) That's nonsense what erdogan is saying about these judges.. that they had links to some ex- imam, on exile in USA for years.. Google translated post of some T…

This question came out of a friend's comments about whether or not the RNC should be allowed to use a song by Queen. Long story short, my friend asserted that a Christian baker should be required to bake a cake for a gay wedding, but Queen should not be required to sell song usage rights to a conservative. His reasoning was that "one you're born with, one you choose". This got me thinking. In the first place, I don't believe it is as simple as "one you're born with, one you choose". My understanding is that there is some evidence for the heritability of both, and both are open questions. It is even possible, based on my limited reading on the topic, that political ori…

The revenge of Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is worrying. We have seen this kind of action before throught history - chop off the heads of those who can think for themsevles. Same of the purge of the armed forces. We have seen this before... "More than 1,500 university deans have also been ordered to resign and the licences of 21,000 teachers working at private institutions revoked." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36838347

As if not enough is going on, it appears that there is a coup attempt by the military in Turkey. http://nyti.ms/29E5o4X What has to be taken into consideration is the unusual role the military plays when it comes to ensuring secularism, for example.

Once more we see those celebrating brutally attacked with the promotion of terror and creation of hatred as the primary motivation of terrorist murderers. I cannot begin to imagine the shock and horror of those directly involved nor even those just in the same city; but my heart goes out to them. France - the birthplace of so much that is good and progressive is being recast as a place of callous division, and extreme hatred, but this is not true, will never be true, and the French spirit will not be subverted by violence. I hope that the citizens can remain strong - as they did after the last two, so recent, outrages; and that they continue to refuse to give in to th…

In June the UK will vote on whether to leave the European Union (known to my chagrin as Brexit). My intuition is that this will be bad for science in the UK in particular and Europe in general: collaborations between UK and European institutions will be that little harder, students mobility will be reduced and EU funding for UK universities will be lost. What do you think? Are there any positives to science for leaving. Any negatives i've missed?

To clarify on striker: I'm not being anti-the rights of people to strike, I'm anti the need of anyone to strike - which is to say that civilisation is wrong to exist such that people need to form unions. Housing, healthcare, education and food and beverages should all be free, able to be free because people make the effort to build the correct foundation.

The more I hear about this gorilla getting shot and killed because a 3-year-old was able to climb into the enclosure, the more absurd it seems that it would even be possible for an infant to get in. If an INFANT could get in, then a crazy but agile adult person would have an EASY time getting in there to cause trouble. The zoo seems terribly guilty to not make such a dangerous place less easy to access for anyone. What do you think?

In the wake of Brexit there have been growing calls for London to declare independence from the rest of the UK. I've lived in London for over 10 years and have heard such calls before, but now they seem a little more appealing. If we had a referendum tomorrow I would vote to leave the UK, preferably in favour of the EU. However, i'm aware that this may just be an emotional reaction: also i am not too versed in politics so would like to know some opinions on the matter. Does the idea have potential or is it a non-starter? How would you vote and why?

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/mar/25/ohio-anti-abortion-heartbeat-bill-passes-house Although unlikely to become law due to opposition in the other house and the executive - but still a state's legislators feel that they should, de facto, ban abortions in the state. And before we breathe a sigh of relief that the Senate and Governor are more sane and cogniscent of the rights of fifty percent of the population - it seems the reason that the bill will not pass through to law is that it is so unconstitutional that it may harm future attempts to constrain women's right to choose http://www.acluohio.org/archives/press-releases/ohio-house-passes-dange…
