  2. Hey guys, For a few years now I have been employed in a few blue-collar jobs but I am wondering, how do white collar jobs compare in comparison? Is a regular white-collar office job stressful? If you have an office job, what do you do exactly in your work on a daily basis? Would one feel less exhausted at the end of a working week if they have white-collar work in comparison to blue-collar work? My dad died when I was young and I never saw him work and same with my mother (she's only ever worked a few temporary jobs but those didn't last long) and hence my reason for my asking. Both my parents were relatively uneducated so my reasons for seeking the life exper…

I'm curious whether when writing a CV it is ok to come up with your own custom layout or is it expected that you will follow some standard format?

  4. Anyone here have any ideas? I believe the average person consumes 8700kJ each day. But what is the optimum daily kilojoule needed to be consumed to boost life expectancy, taking into consideration that intermittent fasting has been shown to extend life expectancy?

  5. I.e. If all humans are 99.5% similar to one another is there much point for a white european intentionally looking for someone who is ethnically african to increase the genetic diversity of any children they may have (e.g. To increase their genetic fitness)? People say that biracial children are smarter and taller on average. Is there any truth behind this? I have heard that there is more genetic variability within a nation/continent than between nations/continents. If this is true, is it still worthwhile to look for someone you think might be "less you" genetically speaking, to procreate with? If you live in a monoracial country is it worth it to go abroad t…

  7. Started by StringJunky,

This question was raised in my mind after reading a comment from one of the most knowledgeable and experienced member's on this forum which suggested they were so dispirited by the content of some of the speculative threads that they don't want to come here as much, which is a great shame, as i have valued their input in the past. The Speculations forum was spoken about a year or two ago and I thought it was high time there was another conversation about it as I myself feel there is a need to reassess it's purpose and where the forum admin might draw the line. I don't want to say any more at the moment as I'd like to see what the poll says in terms of the distribution o…

You don't have to state your age within the thread. It's my suspicion that there aren't many young active users. My guess is the most will belong in the 40-50 group, followed by the 50-60 group, or the other way round.

Did you learn much from completing highschool? What do you think are some of the problems of the highschool curriculum in your country of origin? Do you recall anything from highschool at all now? Do you use anything practical/useful from highschool today in your day-to-day life? If you could change any one thing about the highschool curriculum in your country what would you change? What was the most useful thing your learnt or benefited from attending and completing highschool? How can the highschool curriculum be changed (e.g. achievement based model with different aged peers in classrooms perhaps?) to make it more relevant and useful gauge/indic…

As a 54 yr-old middle-aged man, I have a number of things which really grind my gears. However, after reading another thread on how to pronounce De Broglie, I have to let off some steam. You Yanks are lovely people and I have an American colleague who is a good friend BUT... What really grinds my gears is the way you guys pronounce the name of the artist Van Gogh. It is not "Van go" - that sounds like an advert for a bloody delivery van. The pronunciation is "Van Hoch" like coughing out a half eaten kebab. Please get that right. IIRC, they don't pronounce the letter "G" so Greggs the bakers are not likely to be found in Holland. Now your turn. What rea…

  14. This is an idea I've thought about for some time. I, for one, love theme parks, and I've always wanted there to be one that is fully science-based. It's fun to sit and dream up all the possible ideas one could put into some kind of attraction of this sort. I'm talking about the idea (hypothetical of course) of building a major theme/amusement park that is fully based on true representations of science (not science fiction or pseudoscience). This park would contain a myriad of thrill rides and the like, but would also contain mini museum-esque attractions, shows, activities, etc. All attractions would be centered around factual representations of true science, and would be…

  15. I majored in biotech and do research on diagnostic kits for infectious diseases. Say I "teach" myself programming and even become certified in R or some kind of programming language involved in data science/ bioinformatics. Would industry knowledge (working in biotech 1-5 years) plus moderate knowledge of programming allow someone like myself to move into bioinformatics and/or genetics? Just trying to build up my assets without going back to school and majoring in another program. Thoughts appreciated. ~EE

© In a day of boredom, I had this thought that a conventional keyboard was such a mess. So I decided to make a new layout. The characteristics are the following: 1.The keyboard is symmetrical, the spacebar is in the middle of the length, 4 keys away from the left, and 4 keys away from the right. 2. the letters are in alphabetical order 3. the alphabet is composed in 3 lines of 9 letters with last the ? 4. the letters are in the center of the layout. 5. the numbers 123456789 are above the letters abcdefghi 6. The zero is placed before the number 1 (as in the number line) and not after number 9 7. the F1 key is above the number 1, the F2 above the 2, a.s.…

Hey, college exams are really strict in that they force you to hand them your phone, wallet etc to stop cheating. While I can understand where they are coming from am I the only one here that feels uncomfortable with handing their important personal belongings to people they don't know?

  18. For a story in Reader's Digest, I am putting together a list of the most mind-boggling discoveries/inventions/findings so far in 2017, and I need your ideas! The list could include findings from every branch of science-- astronomy, behavioral psychology, medicine, genetics, biology, etc. Our main criteria is that the findings are interesting, surprising or useful, and that they were published in 2017. Please share your ideas here. Thanks so much for your help on this!

  19. I thought it would be interesting to see what the current age distribution is here. If you wish to declare your age group or age, you can in a post in this thread but it is not required for the purposes of the poll. I'm in the 1961 -1970 group.

Hi friends, When we were kids and young, we all had some kind of misconceptions about the world around us that we see. I had several of such odd thoughts that I want to share with you all. When I studied in class 4/5, I was introduced to the concept how a electric energy lights a bulb (don't think it to be in detail, for we had only a simple diagram of a DC circuit). In the picture given in my book, there was a battery which was connected to a small bulb through two wires. As a convention two signs were given overhead the battery terminals ( + and - ). At that time, I presumed that + and - denotes the two charge types flowing through the wires. I guessed that proto…

I follow (not "like") a lot of pages on Facebook and I use the "see first" option to prioritize certain pages, but it seems I've reached my limit and can't put anything on "see first" any more. I'm wondering if there's a way to see the list of pages I follow and see what's set on "see first" and what isn't? I know I can go to "News Feed Preferences," but that seems to give me a mix of things I like and follow and only allows me to prioritize one thing. Is there a way to see only things I follow?

You are not teachers, why do you all presume your explanations are correct? Thread closed again for no reason but your lack of teaching skills. Nowhere else on the internet do I observe such arrogance as this forum....You get my worse forum vote , so you might as well ban me again for about the 30 time. You all think you know it because you explain wiki , in reality can not think for yourselves or even understand your own science. In short not many of you know what you are actually talking about. Bye cya next time around when I might be a teenager or a single mum or some other type sock. Ban my IP so I can just float it and return with my mult…
