The story has been making the rounds lately and I thought it worthy of attention. Put simply, a person is on film from the opening of a Charlie Chaplin film in 1928 who has their hand to their ear as they walk and talk. It looks for all the world like someone talking on a mobile phone. Here is the original youtube post where the "finder" describes exactly where the footage is on the DVD. If you want to skip that, go to about 2 1/2 minutes in and see the footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv9f-s0KmOU&feature=related There have been a number of opinions and explanations put forward for the footage and why it could not be a traveller, but all so far fai…

Well, some may say I am the peculiar guy... I read the goodbye post of Bascule. I don't want to discuss the content. I just wondered, why did he login under a new name? This post was not from Bascule, it was from a new member named "Goodbye Bascule". Did Bascule forget his password? Was Bascule banned? (Bascule has a 723 reputation score, and is member since April 2005). Or is this imposture?

Hello everyone. I used to be a regular on these forums. But I purposefully changed my account credentials to the point I can't recover my account. This is because I don't think posting on these forums are productive. I feel that, at best, all I can accomplish on any of the controversial forums where I generally post, such as climate science and politics, is to get people to agree on single points while they continue to disagree with me as a whole. Other than that, I generally feel that the climate science forums are dominated by climate denialists, and that the politics forums are dominated (and administered) by Fox-style spinmeisters. For example, I strongly …

  5. Hi everyone, I hope this is the right forum to post this in. I wanted to raise awareness that Invitrogen has developed a new Life Science on-line search tool called Select. It has been designed to significantly reduce the time spent searching on-line for the latest papers and developments and is ideal for those studying and researching. Select uses unique RSS spidering technology to constantly monitor over 200 Life Science journals and libraries, including PubMed, Nature, Biocompare.com, Bionity.COM and Cell, to name but a few! Users can define their own search terms and subscribe to any number of journals from within the Select Library. Any matching pap…

Hi everyone. I'm a writer, amateur comedian, philosopher, and have always had a great interest in science and skepticism. Recently I started writing articles for a site entitled "Things that Shouldn't Still Exist." My most recent article is on hatred towards science (which seriously has no right still existing-- particularly in developed nations). Anyhow, I'm always looking for more topics to write about, so if anyone has suggestions, let me know. So far, I've also covered: Racism, Ghost Hunting, Square Dancing, and Circumcision. The site is an odd mix of philosophy and humor (which is necessary when you're an analytical thinker in a world of dubious, frustrating c…

  9. I wasn't sure where to put this, since I am not meaning to discuss gay marriage here, but wanted your opinion on a thread at rationalskepticism.org. As you know, this is SFN's "partner" site, so I think it is a fair enough topic. Could you please take a look at this thread and let me know what you think. In particular, please take a look at my own posts and the reaction I go to them (I lost it a bit at the end, so edited my last post out). I genuinely am confused as to what the problem is. I gave the argument (which people here are familiar with) that I am opposed to state organised "marriage", irrespective of the gender of the participants. But these guys just do…

In fact , I am still thinking of how I will present my bridge , would I add some videos clarifying what is a truss bridge , how it works , or what ?! I'm working on modeling my bridge at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance NB: The bridge is made of balsa wood.

I'm always trying to find others interested in similar things as myself to work on projects together. I scour here there and everywhere and honestly have never worked with anyone on anything outside of a professional environment. I'm just curious if anyone here is aware of places that have something which addresses the needs of individuals such as myself. Like a hobbyist projects help wanted adds system but closely nit to the scientific community. I have the added disadvantage of not being educated! For the most part I am looking for others who are interested in Scientific Computing/Mathematics, Robotics and General Engineering. I would like to work on Bio projec…

  16. We're starting a new project about science. We don't really want to wait to finish it before talking about it. It's gonna be a long way and we would like to do it step by step with people who are interested in science. To do it short we need your help and support. The aim of the project is to gather high quality resources in one website. Those resources have to be enjoyable and instructive, level by level. That's what we do with our students and we would like to share this kind of work. But we need to develop it with a more ambitious project. Here the alpha 0.0.0.1 version : www.sciencemashup.net We've got only videos but we want gather every kind of suppor…

I'm a bored college student. I'm going to school for Chemical Engineering and I'm looking for some fun projects to do. I don't want anything crazy hard or expensive, just something to take up some free time. I was thinking about growing bacteria or something like that. Any good science DIY projects?

Cool idea. These guys attached an iPhone to a balloon, along with a parachute for recovery, turned on the HD camera and let 'er rip. Some insulation and hand-warming wire kept it from freezing for almost the whole trip, and the built-in GPS function allowed them to quickly locate it after landing. One of the neatest DIY projects I've seen lately. Check it out, with video, here: http://www.i4u.com/41078/what-else-can-iphone-4-do-how-about-record-video-space
