Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.

Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

I am asking about possible drift of personality traits. If we have a small founder population (200-500 individuals) who just happen to say, less neurotic or more extroverted (I'm talking about Big Five traits which are hereditary) would it be possible that the population will shift in distribution of said traits?

What would the microbiology of a torus-shaped microorganism look like? Under what circumstances, practical or hypothetical, might such an anatomy be useful, if such a circumstance exists?

  3. Presume temporarily, for the sake of hypothesis, that there was an afterlife, and that this afterlife existed separately from time. Now, say the life of a friend or loved one meets its end, and in an effort to see them once more, you travel back in time via a Tipler Cylinder. Would the soul of the person in question reside in their past body, or would it remain in the afterlife which exists separately from time?

  4. Ok... I am a medieval guy living approx 1300 AD. I've had a vision that the Chrisitan God is false and in reality Satan more worthy of worship. I set up an altair in my house consisting of a goat's head and a Pentagram. I gather a small group of followers and start practicing the religion. The practices are rather minimalistic, just invoking "Ave Satan!", homosexual sex and self flagellation. After some time someone denounces me to the authorities.... what happens?

What if meta-cognition is the brain thinking about the concept it has formed of itself just as how the brain thinks about the formed concepts it has developed of different objects inside of its environment. And instead of the brain thinking of the brain thinking of the brain recursively the brain thinks of different cognitive objects in which it has direct mirrored control over such as say a hand or an arm which surmise to a singular entity it has formed and connected it to a concept learned known as "itself." Learning in this case just implies that the language and working for the word "itself" has been acquired through some sensory means.

I just had an idea. What if gravity is two forces instead of one? The primary force: An incompatibility between spacetime and matter. Spacetime repelling matter. The secondary force: Matter attracting matter. Being the same it wants to unite. (Surrounded by repelling spacetime.) It's a bit like water and oil. Stupid?

  7. Imagine that we attach a label to each elementary particle in the Universe, each label having a unique natural number ... In this model, everything who can be send in past is represented a series of labels. If a thing is sent back in time...a phone for exemple (we assume that it contains the elementary particles with the numbers 7 and 1003) then we will find in the past, simultaneously these elementary particles twice, in the same Universe and at the same time. Do you think it is possible?

Lots of folks say time flows faster the older you are. That's ofc a subjective illusion. Is there some subset of population for whom its' the other way around?

  13. All speculative science only like mathematics and so on. If the model is a generalization of experience, then it is real natural science. And astronomy is still considered as such At least formal Only that it is not found on the surface of the earth (leaving aside the question of correct measurement for now)? By the way, in my personal opinion, the wave nature of light is direct evidence of aether, because a wave outside the environment is an oxymoron So, in my personal opinion, the evidence of aether is exists

We know that there are people with very good memories. There also people with extremely vivid imagination who can basically experience their imagined world as if it was real. IT's called hyperphantasia. Would it be feasible to create (say via gene editing) a human being who would have a memory so good that he would remember every second of his life and experience it like a movie/

I’ve always been skeptical about the idea that all the particles in the universe were always present, but were once confined into a very small place, which then supposedly gave rise to the Big Bang. It’s as if supporters of this idea can’t seem to leave Fred Hoyle's ‘static universe’ hypothesis, by continuing to assume that there is this fixed, unchanging amount of particles in the universe. The opposite of this idea is of course that the universe went from 1 to 2 particles, and eventually lead to the vast amount of matter and energy we have today. The total number of particles in the visible universe is estimated to be 3,3 x 10^88. Well, living organisms evolve b…

Here's how to make racing cars fly: Put raised spoilers on the front and back of racing cars to create lift. The more speed the racing car has, the more lift it will have, and racing cars can go really fast. When the car starts flying, turn on jet propulsion on the back. The spoilers will continue to create lift, and the car will fly. There, you have it! Sincerely, Marlon Schmitt

  17. Hi everyone I was watching this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ2czFuIYmQ starting at 7:25) where they took an air quality meter (it looks like it was this one https://amzn.to/3kBUmCe), placed it beside a record on a turntable and the hazard levels started increasing for both TVOC and formaldehyde. Therefore, do vinyl records truly pose a threat to human health temporarily or over time? Also, was the experiment performed here solid or are there holes in this? Has anyone tried to replicate this experiment with a similar outcome? I've encountered many different comments in regards to vinyl toxicity for records and just PVC based ite…

  18. Started by RefractiveReflective,

I came up with this odd equation to explain the Tunneling Effect that exists at the event horizon of a black hole. -1<=0=>(-10)+11 This may not adhere to any standard format. I typed this up awhile back and don't want to edit it. I'll type up a better version with some art. I would like feed back, you may as well save "you're wrong." On the surface -1=0=1 cancels out and is mathematically sound. I will do my best to clarify this concept. My math was derived while doing paintings and research on the paranormal. My methods would be considered scientific nonsense. Much of my data was derived from tearing through every layer of reality in my imagination. Hence…

  20. One of the fundamental laws of electromagnetism is the “Faraday's law of induction”. This law states that the induced EMF in a wire loop is equal to the rate of change of the magnetic flux enclosed with the loop, or E=dΦ/dt (the minus sign before “dΦ/dt” is left out because it is not important for our discussion). In the textbooks is often given an example of a loop in the shape of a rectangle which rotates in a magnetic field (figure below). What is meant by “the rate of change of the magnetic flux enclosed with the loop”? To explain this, we will make a comparison. If we hold a ring in front of our eyes as if we want to see through it, then it has a shape o…

  22. Dear moderator @Phi for All, Thanks to the valuable feedback of the members of this forum (especially thanks to @swansont, @joigus and @Ghideon) I realized where I was wrong (use of wrong definitions and unclear arguments) and I am asking for a third and final round (revised work) regarding the same discussion about the possibility of triggering motion in an isolated system through internal forces (Euler Inertial Forces). Again, I would be thankful to show me where I could possibly be wrong. The revised paper (abstract, first two pages and References. Check the new paper in my profile) is now named "Circumventing Newton's third law through Euler Inertial Forces". M…

  23. Can Anything Be Relative to Empty Space? Such as in Special Relativity, "example here." But, in this question space would be "nothingness" the void or barrier beyond this universe, or maybe a black hole, "whom knows." I get this idea from particle entanglement. And if we could do this, how would this change our technology?

Causal: Cause and Effect Questions Designed to determine whether one or more variables causes or affects one or more outcome variables. A random variable is a mathematical function that ""maps""outcomes of random experiments to numbers. It can be thought of as the numeric result of operating a non-deterministic mechanism or performing a non-deterministic experiment to generate a random result.
