If you're unfamiliar with it, microneedling is a proceedure used for skin rejuvenation (including removing scars) and hair loss. A device is used to create many many tiny needle puncture wounds on the skin or the scalp. It's something htat is becoming increasingly popular, but it seems to me, with my limited knowledge, that there might be some cancer concerns here through two distinct mechanisms: 1) What is described here starting with the header "Dermarolling May Trigger Tumor Formation" 2) generation of new hair follicles through stem cells When used on the scalp, microneedling induces the creation of new hair follicles through stem cell division. From…

This issue has long been an obsession of mine, since before I even really had an accurate understanding of what it was. I used to think embryonic stem cells came from aborted fetuses; yet I get angry when hearing others spread the exact same myth. (For the record, for anyone reading, they come from in vitro fertilizations or from cloned embryos.) To avoid falling into the same sort of trap as before, I want to make sure I know what I'm talking about amidst an issue left murky by controversy. A. One popular talking point against embryonic stem cell research is that because other stem cells have (supposedly) gotten better results. Firstly, aren't they supposed t…

... is the title of a Discovery Channel documentary my wife and I recently discovered and purchased. It is about the NIH Clinical Center, Building 10, the largest research hospital in the world and, unfortunately, one of our best kept secrets IMO. This documentary is the first time the NIH allowed a camera crew to follow 4 patients, from admission through final treatments, as the patients sought final option care. I thought it was a very well done, often times moving production. I highly recommend it.

In many psuchiatric/neurodevelopmental disorders extensive loss of grey matter and damage to white matter tracts is clearly present. In schizophrenia thinning of grey matter all across the brain is extensive, it can reach as much as 25% in some regions. What would be some potential strategies to restore lost grey matter? There is almost no neurogenesis in adult human brain outside a small part of hippocampus.

  6. I will be using a 1.5mm dermaroller on my scalp as part of a hairloss treatment and I'm wondering: #1 What can I sterilize the needles with and how long do I need to soak them? #2 What should I use to disinfect the skin I will be needling?

  7. Im doing a research assignment for school in biology. I was told by my tutor that a good experiment to do would be charcoals effect on preventing the absorption on aspirin in which i would get participants to split into two groups (maybe more division later but this it the basic idea), have both groups take a single dose of aspirin but one group ingesting activated charcoal straight after, and then testing urine for signs of aspiring. I like the idea of this experiment and have access to the right reading to be able to write a lab report and discussion to follow this, but I had an idea to edit the experiment by testing the effectiveness of other edible adsorptive substanc…

I clicked on this expecting to watch a couple of seconds of it, but I ended up watching it right through which is rare for me. It follows the mystery of where syphilis came from. Did it come from the Americas, as has long been thought, or did we give it to the Americas ? There's plenty of proper scientific detective work on off in the documentary. The answer given in the film is interesting, and the film also gives an insight into the horrendous suffering that people went through in the past, and how lucky we are, to have modern health care. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found it well worth a watch : Apologies if there is some rule against re…

  9. I believe my co-renter has recently started poisoning/ drugging some of my food. After eating a few things such as my salad dressing which I didn’t have any reaction to just after buying it, now makes my heart pound my left arm pulse with my heart beat, weird feeling in my stomach, hard to concentrate and ends with pains, ringing and a headache. It starts about 20min. after eating and goes away in about 2 hours. I thought it was all in my head so I tried the salad dressing again, same symptoms. This also happens when I use my mustard.. If I had to speculate what it is, I would say: 1. old co-rente…

  10. Hi Everyone, I have an assignment where I have to label the areas of the brain in the right place on the brain map. Based on what I know, I attempted the assignment on my own. I am a little frustrated because the labels seem a bit off from the locations displayed on the brain map. Can someone please check my work to see if all of the areas of the brain that are labeled on this brain map are marked correctly? If some things need to be switched, can you please tell me which. I am panicking being that my assignment is due tomorrow. I would truly appreciate if someone could help me out. Thank you and Kind regards.

Clinical trials as of now are very long and expensive, it takes $1-2 bln and 8-10 years for a promising molecule to be tested and approved. MAny promising drugs cannot be tested in trials because they cannot be patented. Are there any potential ways to shorten the process and make it less expensive?

So a few days ago I started drinking alcohol, the 3% alcohol cocktail by Suntory that is sold in the market. After continuously drinking for a month, I have not caught a cold since. And there really isn't any other symptoms besides no longer afraid of heat and sneezes from time to time, it probably killed too many germs. Anyway, there was this myth that drinking eggnog cures cold. So, this is unconfirmed medical advice, meaning you shouldn't try it when you are sick. If the cold is not going to kill me I might experiment with the cold by drinking that 3% alcohol. But I want to hear what you experts think. I mean drinking alcohol goes into the whole body and bloodstream in…

  18. https://sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S073567570800332X Maybe I am reading it wrong, but is this implying that she is allergic to sodium chloride? Since it mentions in the full text she did not react to the intravenous dextrose solution so now I am curious. It seems to imply this woman has an IgE mediated reaction to Na+ and Cl-, but we're told that such allergies are impossible since sodium is just an atom and you can't be allergic to glucose, oxygen, etc because they are too small to bind to antibodies, so I am very confused by what I have just read and I want you guys thoughts on it. Full text - Anaphylaxis is a severe multisystemic hypersensit…

I almost ingested something that smelled and tasted toxic and similar to nail polish remover in food my wife bought using a food delivery app and then placed in the fridge. I knew there was something off before I even put it in my mouth when I saw a lot of liquid beneath the food that shouldn’t be there. The second I placed it in my mouth I knew immediately something was very wrong; I spit it out immediately and rinsed thoroughly. Only then did I sniff the food and realized there was something in there that is not meant to be ingested. Now I would like to know what the substance is. The reason I’m posting about this here is it seems there are some people here who are know…

  21. Thank you for posting links to actual information. I created a thread a while ago that received the generalized "Go talk to your doc." responses , I mean I wouldn't have asked for information elsewhere if my doctors where more informative. Or on the other hand maybe I wanted to be more informed before I talk to my doctors. Anyway thank you for helpful information, I wish more people would had out tools instead of advice (unless it's advice with tools... BONUS!)

  22. Humans wiped out mosquitoes (in one small lab test) If we could eliminate a species, should we? Science News. BY SUSAN MILIUS, 8:26AM, DECEMBER 17, 2018 "For the first time, humans have built a set of pushy, destructive genes that infiltrated small populations of mosquitoes and drove them to extinction. But before dancing sleeveless in the streets, let’s be clear. This extermination occurred in a lab in mosquito populations with less of the crazy genetic diversity that an extinction scheme would face in the wild. The new gene drive, constructed to speed the spread of a damaging genetic tweak to virtually all offspring, is a long way from practical use. Yet this test…

If it is the wrong area please suggest the correct area I know a lot of conflicting information exists on the topic of B17 or Amygdalin But I have seen a man's health descend rapidly after discontinuing use and die of cancer and I have seen evidence of major remission of cancer with the use of oral B17 products that was harvested naturally and no other medicine was used The extraction of Amygdalin appears to be extremely basic and easy however I am hoping someone better educated than I can help me to understand in what state Amygdalin is safe for Intravenous use. …

Something scary and depressing and its certainly not putting me into the frame of mind I want to be in. Apparently, Poland is a country in which the ratio of men suicide to women suicide is highest in the world and the difference in men/women life span is largest from the 35 countries studied. If anyone knows how to debunk this or at least has some tips on how to stop thinking about it I’d be much obliged. Source: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(16)32381-9/fulltext I would also like to disclose my „hidden agenda” beforehand so I will not be accused of anything fishy if/when this topic evolves. 25. What has caused STIs to reach epidemic and record levels in 2018? Is it the water we drink? The air we breathe? Dirty toilet seats? (CNN)Rates of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia have climbed for the fourth consecutive year in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday at the National STD Prevention Conference in Washington. Last year, nearly 2.3 million US cases of these sexually transmitted diseases were diagnosed, according to preliminary data. That's the highest number ever reported nationwide, breaking the record set in 2016 by more than 200,000 cases, acco…
