Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

The way I see it, if God can do anything, even perform acts that are outside the laws of the physical universe He may even have created, it destroys most chances of meaningful scientific discussion about Him. If, however, God merely has a complete knowledge of the universe and operates within its laws, then we can actually have a decent dialogue that's not destined to end with, "Well, He's all-powerful, sooooo...." God still doesn't seem to desire direct observation, but with omnipotence removed He is less supernatural. What if He has been working with the Laws of Everything (all interactions unified with gravity and completely understood) for billions of years (wit…

Let A be the set of all things known by God. If God knows it, it's in A. It doesn't matter what it is; if it's a piece of God's knowledge, then it's in A. Now, let's take A and construct what's called the "Power Set" of A [we'll use "P(A)" for short]. The power set is just the set of all subsets of the set. So, if our set is {1, 2, 3}, then it's power set is {∅, {1}, {2}, {3}, {1, 2}, {1, 3}, {2,3}, {1, 2, 3}}, where ∅ is the set of nothing. An important fact to note is that there is a lot more in the power set than there is in the original set. In fact, for any set, its power set has a higher cardinality than it. This is a famous result called "Cantor's Theore…

This word kinda makes me giggle inside as, to me at least, it is synonymous with nonexistent. Natural, imo, is all that exists, something that is outside of the natural realm would not fall into the set of things that exist. 'Paranormal' would seem to be a better word. It's the same thing when people talk about things 'existing' outside of the universe.

  4. (I'm not really sure which subforum this belongs in) I'm just trying to understand how reality works but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Just hoping someone can help me make sense of this. There has to be someone out there that understands this stuff. If you've heard of the law of attraction, I'm very interested in this topic because I have manifested lots of things into my experience over those years. I know it works - I've seen it work many times. Some people think we "attract" our desires/manifestations to us, but I think what is actually happening is that we are shifting our thoughts/feelings/beliefs/vibrations (because everything i…

A documentary potraying the lives of victims of sexual child abuse by priests in Poland and showing the conspiracy of silence by the church. This has 2.5mln views in just 15 hours after the premiere. I briefly checked the English subtitles, theyre not bad, definitely watchable. This documentary has been done totally independently with private funding (obviously), I did contribute a small amount of money to the making of this movie but I have no affilation or any comercial gain from it. Its 2 hours long, the maker stated he will give the rights to the movie to Netflix for free, for now its available for free on youtube: I think this is an important step in c…

Why would god reveal himself to iron aged peasants and send Jesus at a time when there was no video or photos? Certainly he knew today's era was coming. Why not reveal all of that now? That way there would be no doubt. The entire world would see. Get the parting of a sea on video and all doubt would be laid to rest. Makes perfect sense. There's still time. Is no one worthy in today's era to have such power bestowed upon them? More people in this era need to be rescued from famine. What's going on?

If anyone can, then debate the proof I provided below and provide evidence to the contrary. As you will see below, the majority of the translations of the Quran into English (and into other languages, from the source language - Old Arabic - in which it was written down) are not to be trusted, whether politically motivated or unintentionally, at least in regards to the verses likewise for the Gospels (for the Gospels I will provide evidence at the end, for the Hebrew Bible I do not have proof, but I'd be careful regarding it too, given both the Quran and the Gospels being translated in a way which completely changes the meaning of the word), as you will see below.…

  11. Based on the Scripture: Energy doesn't appear physically except when it's changed into physical matter. It took scientists thousands of years before Albert Einstein confirmed God's Holy Word with his theory of relativity. Hbr 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds (multiverse) were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Einstein learned the SAME thing. He learned that matter and energy were the same. In order to make matter, it takes energy to produce matter in physical form. Then, you will have things which are seen, but made from things which do not appear to the eye. Then WHERE did the energy …

  12. Religions existed almost everywhere in this planet called earth. It's seems that humans are religious in nature. Religions are diverse. A question may arise, WHY? Here, I will provide the biblical explanation of it. Let me offer Romans 1:19-25:" 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and t…

so i was thinking about the "soul" concept and i have a few questions for any people that may believe we have a soul. as i do not. soul believers claim that when we die, the soul leaves the body and goes to heaven, or hell. so, im wondering, when and how did the soul enter the body? was it at birth, or conception, or when. if its at birth, what about a premature birth, or induced somehow. if its at conception, what if the mum has a miscarriage or some other complication. and where is the soul before it enters the body? and how how does gods cataloguing system decide which soul goes to which body? and does every human have one? what about spastics …

Why is it that all humans die someday? Even the Christians say “Jesus” died, but not: “God” died. In the Bible, Mark 10:18 says only God is truly good. I can believe this because all humans die and God does not. Humans are beings. God is a being. One dies, the other doesn’t. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll know you’re not really a good being. Otherwise, you’ll never die. It’s undeniable. Then it should be no surprise to know that humanity is on the verge of extinction; there’s a war between Good and evil behind the scenes. Goodness should have just deleted evil at the beginning, but strangely, evil has enough power to prevent its immediate death. This is why humani…

Hello everyone, I'd like some help on how to debunk a numerology on the Bible. It's based on the work of Vernon Jenkins. It's a bit too complicated mathematically for me, so if someone good at it could help me, I'd appreciate. So, here is the point made by the author: Genesis 1.1 and John 1.1 are mathematically linked as well as theologically (they are the 2 "in the beginning" passage) He says the gematria (in Hebrew) of genesis 1.1 = 2701 = 37*73 = 19*37 + 2*27*37 He then isolates the numbers 27, 37 and 73 from the calculation above and says that the gematria of genesis 1.1 (still Hebrew) + John 1.1 (in Greek) equals 6328 which is 73² + 27…
