Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

So. The DoubleChrist Twins. Hmm. Call me crazy, call me sentimental, but it seemeth to me that there were two heavily prophesied figures inhabiting one physical body of Jesus the Christ; two great Spirits contained in the body of one very enigmatic Godman. C'mon now, hear me out, I'll be brief: One was named Immanuel; named way back in days of Isaiah (Isaiah 45: 3, "I, the LORD... 4 I have surnamed you..."). And the other was named Jesus by his adoptive dad Joseph, on the advice of an angel. The Isaiah prophecy as seen when Christ was born, in Matthew 1: 23, "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his n…

This is a continuation of discussion between me and John Cuthber from the Paris attack thread. There, John quoted a verse from Mathew (10:34) that says: To begin this discussion my question is - what type of sword did Jesus bring and how did he use it?

Why has there been a change in the idiom of religion from emphasis on apotheosis to compassion. This is evident in most modern religions like Buddhism, Islam, Christianity etc.? I think modern religions contain less of folklore and more moral construct. Do you agree ?

In the beginning, there was the Nothing, Darkness Then God awoke and became aware of The Nothing. God became self aware. God felt.. " I Am, I Exist ". In the moment of self realisation, God Became the One Consciousness, Which Became Light. Then God Felt, What is the reason, Why do I exist, What is the meaning? " I Am Alone ". God needed a meaning, a reason... So God decided to Create.. And the Answer to Loneliness became Creativity. God found the meaning of Life, God Became the meaning Of Life.. Gods creations became the meaning of life. But now Gods creations are asking the same question. " What is the meaning of life " and Gods creation decided to create for th…

I was wondering about once you "STATE" yourself an "Atheist", Most in this forum understand the universe on many levels, and most religions do not agree with what is known in science. I do not follow any written religion but I would not call myself an atheist. Do you lose some of that spark of "human imagination/freedom of thought" once you state yourself an Atheist, only believing in what you can prove?

could sentience, given enough knowledge of the "why anything" question, take that knowledge and affix a meaning to the word "spiritual" that would infer a way of changing (upgrade) the spiritual environment of the observer, given that the knowledge acquired allowed a spiritual realm to have a plausible reason to exist? If the start of the universe was 13.7b years ago, then everything from that microsecond after the big bang is second hand news. So, an upgraded religion would take the central idea of that there is a physics, or proto-physics of a prior era, and that it will eventually be ascertained.

There are many web sites and books written on the subject that uses scientific evidence to support the case of a creator. i.e.. “The Case For a Creator” Auth. Lee Strobel. The biological evidence that supports a Creator is the fact that there are tens of thousands of irreducibly complex systems on the cellular level. In our cells we have hundreds of processes occurring in harmony but no explanation why organelles without intelligence perform functions to sustain the cell. The eye is another irreducible complex system, parts that work together that can only be explained by design. Our bodies are made up of systems, working together and without them ther…

The Beast Revelation This letter is dedicated to all Christians. The following letter is a summary of Revelation 13. Its purpose is to show the method used in finding the conclusions which have been stated. Nothing new has been added from my previous letters. It is more of a compilation of them all. This writing is the same material in different words. The Bible uses this same method of explanation. There are four Gospels. In each you see a different view of the same material. This can be beneficial because the meaning becomes more exact. Although, if this is a first time reader, then this will all be news to you. With that in mind, here we go. The first thing that sho…

So from general consensus I've decided to make a broad list of Question and Answers for the general topics and arguments constantly reused. If your thinking of starting a new topic relating to creationism and it's listed here then please save your time as scientifically there's no use. However if you have a totally unrelated topic regarding creationism not listed then feel free to open a new thread. Q.1) If you take any living organism and examine it, it has the hallmark of being designed exactly that way for exactly that purpose which means someone must have designed that organism, because there's no other reason a cow or dog would exist otherwise. A.1) Th…

I was researching humanism and I'm a little confused. Is it a religion? Ideology? Philosophy? I understand that there are "humanist organizations" Do they have meetings? Churches? Congregations? Literature? Do they preach? I guess what I'm looking for too is it like an organization that people belong to? Like "baptized into" sorta thing? Like do you become a member? Or is it just like saying that you are of a certain school of thought? Your help us appreciated :-D have a good day.

To help christians and evolutionists understand the bible, I will try to explain it in a simple way. Let's assume you have a computer in front of you. Before working on your computer, have a good look at your screen saver what ever it is. This picture on your screen is made up of many pixels of different colors. To illustrate my point, assume you can remove all these colored light pixels three feet from your screen. Now your screen is blank and all these colored light pixels mingle among themselves within the same dimension of your computer screen and, every ten minutes, 100 pixels of light will hit your blank computer screen in a strait line. If these pixels of…

Hi friends: As some of you may be aware, it is common for religious apologists and creationists to claim that their views are treated unfairly by those who follow a secular agenda. John Lennox, for example, has said that atheism is wishful thinking in that it is the hope that atheists will never have to meet God. As a result, secularists have a bias against the supernatural and treat it unfairly by censoring it especially in regard to science. Although I am an atheist, I must agree with Lennox in that I do hope I will never encounter his god! Atheists are as human as the religious and have biases and can act irrationally. I know I'm like that. Nevertheless, I do …

My agnostic friend told me that all religions have their strong points, even those religions like Islam. However, every single religion has it's downfalls and this is where all the violence comes in. In your opinion, will mankind ever invent the perfect religion? I think many religions are correct of there being a creator, because we couldn't have gotten here any other way. But at the same time they each have imperfections of what a creator would be like. Now let us try to imagine what a perfect religion would be like... 1. No violence of any kind (even for religious reasons). 2. No contradictions. 3. Agrees with science and reason. 4. Choosing this religio…

The physics theory is competition with logical ability. So we are fighting with each other to win the war by logical thinking. So physics theory is the memory for the war with logical mind. And as a result, it is good to BE.

There are reasons why I have become an atheist and I am going to explain them. My personal experience has led me to atheism as well as naturalism which is the idea that there is no supernatural (God, spirits, afterlife, heaven, hell, etc.) and I am very skeptical of the idea that God exists and that the afterlife and supernatural exist. So I am going to explain and question those things. However, I should also leave my atheism/naturalism out to question as well for others. I have struggled with depression and I think it is my depression that has given me a rational view of life which made me an atheist and a naturalist. Now I am also going to question my atheism/natur…

When people are claimed to have near death experiences when their brains are said to completely shut down, we have to look at this both ways. First off, these people claim that they are very real and vivid experiences far more real and vivid than their dreams. So it would have to take much more activity of the brain to yield these near death experiences than the activity that is needed to create dreams for these specific individuals. Why is that? It is because to create a mental experience or image that is much more vivid and realistic requires more brain activity to do so. So there could be a surge of brain activity that the scientists just simply have not manage…

There is a UK hospital called Bare Below the Elbows (BBE). It requires healthcare workers in the clinical area or upon patient contact are have nothing covering their skin from the elbow down. Its aim is to reduce hospital acquired infections. There is some debate as to whether it actually works, but for the sake of this thread let us assume that it is effective. There are some female Muslim healthcare workers who, for religious reasons, want to be exempt from this policy: that is they wish to be able to cover their arms at all times. The question then is whether this exemption should be allowed. We are balancing peoples right to practice their religion against a…
