We all hear a lot of doom and gloom when it comes to man-made climate change. What I hear less of, is what science, technologies and policies are being developed that might have the potential to halt it. So here is a scenario; imagine we have access to the military budget of every nation and we could use it to fight climate change. What should we do with that money in this scenario? Assuming all nations agreed to cessation of all military conflicts until the climate is no longer under threat from us, for the time being. Obviously this is a highly unlikely scenario, but for the sake of argument I want to know what could be done with a massive re-prioritis…

If my understanding of human bone is correct; The bone makes blood for body and in return, body needs the bone. When in outer space in a micro-gravity environment or no gravity at all, the relationship between body and Earth decreases to minimum or none at all thus minimum or presumably absence of a type of sustainability for bone. The cause of bone loss is far more likely because of relationship between body and Earth (eg. gravity, etc), and of course with surface ecology in consideration. Assumption 1 - Optimal Function: Then I think that body uses up what is available from bone (eg. blood). Bone will likely continue to provide until it is completely used up a…

About 70% of microbial diseases are caused by zoonotic pathogens. These pathogens cause human disease when spillover occurs from the animal host to a human host. Certain environments are conducive to bringing about spillover events. Environments which bring humans into close contact with animals under unsanitary and unhygienic conditions can cause viral spillover. The current global pandemic caused by Sars-cov-2 got it's start about the middle of last November when patient zero contracted an infection from a wet market in Wuhan province when he purchased a pangolin from a wet market which he had for dinner. What can we do to prevent the next global pandemic? What environm…

I am beginning to hear rumors of how 5G technology in cell phones and other tech will result in all sorts of death and destruction or at least kill off birds or may just give your ears a suntan. Is there any truth to these rumors?

I’ve recently read an article by A.Mostovoi, scientist from Norilsk, about the influence of noise pollution. Noise pollution according to this researcher has fatal effects. Do you agree with it?

Summer 2018 I went to a place with a lot of grass, and I heard grasshoppers here and there, but nothing special, it was mostly very silent. Summer 2019 I went to the same place, around the same time, and I heard them absolutely everywhere, coming from every direction, even when walking a good distance, they were making noise everywhere. Do they tend to skip a summer?

Hey. I'm making sort of science videos about our future, technologies, ecology, etc. And a few days ago I've made video about the water crisis. I tried to figure out this topic by myself, but I'm pretty sure that there are some mistakes and so on. So.. Can you review it and tell what do you think? Feel free in criticizing. I really appreciate it. Thanks. Edit: video removed ! Moderator Note We do not want folks to use this site to direct to video channels as per rule 7. If you are interested in discussing things, please provide a short list of issues that you are not certain about.

I need some help identifying a bug. I took a picture with my phone when observing it through a dissection microscope. It's about 4-6mm in length and I'm currently storing it in spiritus so it won't spoil (or so I've been told it works like this). The insect is gray on the outside. It was found in grass in Poland by the beach in a place called Hel (just next to the Baltic Sea). I'd like to try and dissect it, but I want to know who will be the subject of my experiment. Any help will be gladly appreciated.

The title is self explanatory. To me, some of the examples are obvious. The smallpox virus, the Leprosy bacterium, those parasitic worms that get inside your eyes, the syphilis bug, the world would surely be a better place without them. But would you let the mosquito go extinct, when so many animals eat them? Or would you just exterminate the malarial parasite? I personally would let the warble fly go extinct tomorrow. I'm sure others would disagree, but I can't think of any redeeming features of it. But, if you started killing off parasites, where would you stop? I suppose all predators are sort of parasites, including us humans if you stretch the wor…

Majority of modern agricultural plants have photosynthesis efficiency lower than 0.5%. It is claimed that sugar cane has ph. efficiency 8%, while record claimed efficiency in nature may approach 20-30% (in some microalgae). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthetic_efficiency The vast majority of modern plants cannot extract carbon from soil or organic fertilizers (correct me if I'm wrong). But only from air, where is a meager amount of CO2. Majority cannot fix nitrogen from air. None are capable to active breathing like animals, but only to passive sorption, what should be a thousands of times less efficient. I …

A homing/racing pigeon was hanging around our home tonight. Kept returning to our porch. It flew to the roof when our dog chased it, but then came back. It’s really docile and not at all afraid of us. My neighbor said it was in his garage and yard earlier today, and another neighbor said it was in their deck yesterday. It has a tag with an ID on its leg. Looked it up online and submitted a form (and separately an email) to the pigeon clubs that we identified from the tag, but it’s Friday night on a holiday weekend during social isolation, so I’m not terribly optimistic we’ll hear back any time soon. We tried to shoo it away, but it kept returning. Decided …

Dear All! My idea is that the alternative Nobel Prize each year would be spent to buy as many school buses as possible for that amount of money. Of course it woudl be best that such a bus gets a school which can't afford , but anyway, each bus counts because of making kids aware of the problem. All the money goes just for buses, nothing else. Please, write your either name or nick, as you wish, the school you widh to get a bus (if you have one) and the email of a journal you want to be contacted with the idea. Each name counts, so if you like the idea lets stay together. We will talk about everything what happens in this topic. I faced wi…

Question for the field biologists in here. I am responsible for performing monitoring on some sensitive habitat restoration areas, and one of the things I look at is invasive species coverage. My question is, when performing my invasive assessments, should I count plants that were treated by herbicides recently and so appear dead (brown, crispy, all that) but that I have a high degree of certainty will regrow by the next growing season? Many invasives will just laugh after the first or second herbicide treatment, and I don't want to misrepresent results to make it seem that infestation rates are lower than they actually are, but I have sample plots where the coverage…

or try to hunt invasive species to extinction? Doesn't matter if it is carp, in the missisippy or pythons in the everglades or zebra mussels in the great lakes. For some reason humans seek to exterminate any species that moved into a new zone. By this standard we should be eliminating the people who drained the everglades and dammed too many rivers exterminating them of native fish species. So isn't the human the Earths most invasive species and should they be eliminated in order to preserve the ecosystem? Or are ecosystems designed to change which is the reason that 98 to 99 percent of all species are extinct? Food for thought as you step on that anthill

To mantain balance and regulation in ecosytems is a priority for survivance, but once we alter the natural order a chain reaction begins and it an affect almost every organism that is part of it... So, is sustainability and ecosystems homeostasis related to the increasing development of lung cancer?

Fishing boats have an allowed quota for a certain tonnes of captures each season on certain areas/countries. Would it be feasible, to allow additional tonneage to fishing vessels that bring to shore the sea of plastic ? For a ton of plastic removed, an extra ton of fish allowed to capture. Just imagine these nets doing cleanup when the vessels are done for the season. It has to help, hasn't ? The planet wins, the fishermen win, rewarded right away or for the next season with more quota than their competitors. And a cleaner sea has at some point to benefit the fishermen too, right ? How to implement details ? Acceptance expectations ? Whom t…
