Many institutions are plagued by what is commonly referred to as an "Old Boy Network" wherein the top brass engage in a program of mutual protection and self-interest; overlooking -- perhaps even encouraging -- each other's transgressions at the expense of stifling merit and creativity in the lower ranks. Have you had any first hand experience of this? Discuss.

Hi Everyone I would be very grateful for some clarification about something. I have been watching the news coverage about "antisemitism" in the Labour Party and, to be honest, I don't think that the media are explaining it very well. The media are being very vague about it. I should state at this point that I think that genuine antisemitism is 100% evil. I believe that to treat anyone differently just because of their race or ethnicity is an evil thing to do. However, I do not believe that there is anything whatsoever antisemitic about criticising the Israeli government. I might be wrong but I get the impression that some of the campaigners against ant…

It is said they do not exist, previously people have tried to find the links between people that they are all based on the same stuff mentally, and, found that there is no definite answer to the questions of all being the same sort of creature. I found this strange so decided to try to find some for myself. Three things I found between all people is that they think they are 'right,' they think they are 'loved,' and they think they are 'better than others.' These three moral absolutes led me to define more specifically the human psyche, and then found more absolutes, under those, of course. I have also found the root of love, hate and all emotions - "strength." W…

As a man of few encounters, I have observed that there is some misunderstanding between men and woman, and, am fully prepared to explain myself, with evidence based on, well, observations that nobody can argue with, as they are that abundant, if you will. Serenading the woman is the job of 'the seeker.' The man seeks to woo the woman, [woo] + [man], and the woman seeks the security the man affords her. This is because the female is full of estrogen and seeks to be comforted and protect her babies from harm so seeks the embrace of a strong man, yes? This is the flower to be pollinated, of course. The man needs to accept that nothing bad will happen to him if he i…

So I was watching a video on Youtube channel of lindybeige about historical perspective and it got me thinking. In the video linked below he talks about how in Medieval England if a villein woman was widowed and didn't find a new husband after a while her lord could go and arrange a mariage, selecting suitable husband for her himself. And from a modern point of view that sounds ridiculous. I mean, he selects a husband for a woman whom she might not even know and even if she knows, might not even like at all? How horrible. He then goes and takes us to 200 years in the future (our future) and what would people then could potentially think of our society. Like the social…

With the issue of education in the United States, I would like to gather a consensus from the community. In your experience as a student/past student, what qualities in any of your past or present teachers enables them to engage and motivate the class as a whole? Is the emphasis on standarized testing appropriate to gauge a student's skill level? Why is there a high turnover rate in teaching positions? If given the financial opportunity, what would be the best way to go about teaching a student? Please feel free to add additional information that could elaborate on the topic of education. As well, any teachers here, I would greatly appreciate your fee…

This thread is about the competitiveness of society, and the need for grades from early age, what I call the meat grinding machine. From the age of 6 kids are forced into schools, where the competitiveness is high, and also the demand from them, to bring grades and school accomplishment, mainly through tests they have to take. From the age of 6 they are thrown into the meat grinding machine. The parents want their kids to succeed, and push them towards the earning of good grades. The competitiveness is not just at school, but also at home, from their loved ones, from those who need to look out and care for them the most. Is this really the best system ? Why not a system o…

If there will be a way invented in the foreseeable future how to transfer human personality to a chip, shouldn't the legislators start to pass a laws already now, which would protect the rights of such a digitalized humans? I would suggest the following rules to think on: 1) A digitalized personality suppose to have the same rights as a "common" human. 2) It has to be protected against abuse and slavery. 3) A dig. personality suppose to own a carrier it is located on automatically. So, if someone settled a personality to its own futuristic smartphone he looses rights to owe this smartphone automatically and dig. person gains it. Government suppose provide a…

What’s an appropriate age to begin educating a child about finances? So many of us as we mature look back and think, “gosh, if only someone had mentioned that” or “if only I’d known that sooner, imagine what I could’ve done differently.” In financial terms, examples include: - Save 20% of every paycheck - Compound interest is one of the most powerful wealth generation tools available. Summarized: The sooner you start the better - Maximize 401k contributions - A company match on retirement savings is basically free money - Getting the lowest possible interest rates will allow you to both pay off the loan sooner and make smaller monthly pa…

In my opinion it both leaves vulnerable to exploitation. For the false hope of being cured many terminally ill patients would probably pay anything. This also turns people in to test subjects pharmaceutical companies will use to increase shareholder value. Perhaps my fears are wrong. Is this ethical?

When I was about 12 years old, I was visiting my Grandmother and watching some awards show on TV. She was making dinner. As I watched the TV, a man walked toward the camera with a big smile on his face and two incredibly beautiful, and tall, women on his arms. Innocently, I asked my Grandmother, "Do you think they are his daughters, or his granddaughters?" She looked up and said, "No. They are his escorts." At my blank look, she explained, "His dates." "Eeww", I said, "Why would those women want to date a wrinkled up, bald-headed, old man?" Grandma smiled and said, "Beautiful women will buzz around powerful men like flies on shit. It has always been that way. It will alwa…

For the sake of argument let's assume we've found a planet around another star, beautiful planet, perfect for and compatible with earth life.We have a star ship capable of getting 5000 people there along with tools, machines, and technology to build cities. In other words colonise a Terra Nova! Just one bad thing, studies had shown that the perfect Eden like planet would be destroyed rather abruptly by it's star in one million years. Would it be ethical to send people who did not know the time limit to colonise this planet? What about 25,000,000 years? How long is long enough to justify colonizing the planet?

Kevin Myers (born 30 March 1947) is an Irish journalist and writer. He writes for the Irish edition of the Sunday Times, having previously been a columnist for the Irish Independent and a former contributor to The Irish Times, where he wrote the "An Irishman's Diary" opinion column several times weekly. Until 2005, he wrote for the UK Sunday Telegraph. His articles criticise left-wing opinion and the "liberal consensus", sometimes incorporating hyperbole, sarcasm and parody. This essay appeared in The Irish Independent: Somalia is not a humanitarian disaster; it is an evolutionary disaster. The current drought is not the worst in 50 years, as the BBC and all the ai…

So I've been reading some H. P. Lovecraft stories and one of those stories is called Herbert West - Reanimator. It got me thinking about the ethics of bringing the dead back to life and how grey these areas often are. If bringing someone back from complete death (brain-dead and other types of death) becomes possible, what would we do with it?

According to some studies: https://www.maxim.com/maxim-man/men-date-younger-women-live-longer-2017-7 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/active/mens-health/5426895/Men-live-longer-if-they-marry-a-younger-woman.html Should every educated person dating have these preferences in mind when considering a potential future marriage partner? Furthermore, would anyone care to speculate why men who marry younger women tend to live longer while for women it is those who choose to marry a man closest to their age that live longest? And also, in regards to "high quality" as used in my thread title question, below are some definitions. High quality man: Handsome, has a go…

Jokes are to make people laugh, they don't need to be morally correct. If you don't think it's funny, you just don't laugh with it....don't go reacting because you think it's morally incorrect. Something that's morally correct in your opinion can be offensive for someone else. It's imo necessary to make jokes about serious stuff, it's a property of a healthy/modern society. It's all about freedom of speech. A forum of course doesn't have freedom of speech. Take for example Rowan Atkinson's sketch about immigration. He says that all immigrants are black and some of them can do some jobs almost as well as white people...This is morally not correct but what does that …

If we were to somehow bring back the Neanderthals from extinction, would they be afforded the same rights as human beings, or merely treated as animals? Or even just as a science experiment?

Sometimes I feel bad when some people I know see me eating alone in a restaurant. Is it normal to feel this way? Anyone care to share some of the experiences when dealing with people you know while eating by yourself in a restaurant? Is it ok to eat alone in a restaurant? Does it make me look unsocial/selfish if I only eat by myself? Every time I go out, must I eat with others as to not seem unsocial/friendless/selfish?

The ethical need to sustain life, the Achilles heel of the NHS? Most of the cost to the NHS is in the last years of our life, and it's my intention to sign a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) as and when my time is nigh, so as to play a small part in its continued success. When is it reasonable for a doctor to sign a DNR, despite the wishes of the patient, if it means a huge saving in costs and will ensure its sustainability.
