Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

This is what I arrived at by taking part of the Epicurean paradox and reversing it. (In some quotes, I've heard it argued that God is malevolent if he is able and not willing to prevent evil, though according to Wikipedia, it argues that God is "not completely benevolent"). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicurean_paradox Therefore, if God is able to prevent good, but not willing to do so. God is not completely malevolent. Or that if God is both able and willing to prevent good, then where does good come from? I think this would make a good counter to arguments that "God is evil" merely because of the existence of evil or on the basis of God "having created …

According to the bible Jesus Christ was a supernatural character who could walk on water, occasionally talked to Satan, and could turn water into wine, amongst many other marvels. Can you be a scientist and still believe in this stuff? As far as I am concerned, you should not be called a scientist or be allowed anywhere near any scientific endeavour if you believe in fictitious myths. Am I being too aggressive in my attitude? Probably, however science and the scientific approach to research application is a serious technical field that should not be sullied by ridiculous fairy tales. >Please move to the Religion section..

This is not arguing for the existence of a God. I'm merely making the argument that, since people are emotional beings, many people may likely disbelieve in God for irrational reasons than rational ones. Examples might include: *Fear of the afterlife or not wanting to have to existentially challenge themselves by speculating about life after death *Negative experiences with religion or a specific religion (e.x. wanting there to not be a God simply out of spite against followers of a God) *Not wanting to be morally accountable to anyone other than themselves *Not wanting to have to think outside of a specific paradigm (e.x. a materialistic paradigm) due…

I personally am an ex christian turned agnostic. I became an agnostic after studying and researching the history of The Speculative Society. I came to understand that it does not matter what we believe, and it is not something we need to argue about. In fact, what we believe does not even need to be spoken about. It can be our own little 33rd degree secret if we wish. Of course, it also does not need to be a taboo subject, and of course, it can be discussed if we so wish. However, for me, agnosticism is ultimately about admitting that I do not know either way whether there is a God or not, so therefore I am not involved in the argument between believers and atheists, as I…

While violence in the the Bible is often used as a point of criticism (and has been even historically, with the Gnostics having criticized the violence in the Old Testament), I think it should at least be put into some historical context. The violence and draconian laws in the Old Testament originated in the Iron Age where similar laws would have been a norm across cultures. (These would have included laws proscribing capital punishment for various crimes, and acts of war). These were simply the laws and practices of a particular place and time (just as how laws in the 19th century US which permitted slavery would be considered barbaric by modern standards), and ther…

the new testament talks about demon possession many times. they say 1/3 of the NT was about jesus casting out demons and you can find those verse on openbible.info. so you believe in christianity then you would have to believe in demons and fallen angels as well. and my belief is that the aliens abductions and ufo activities are fallen angels and not extraterrestrials like the media claims.

Why are Christian's very reactionary in the US? And so anti far left? Why is christianity in the US very different christianity brand than other countries is that because of the strong baptist and born again in the US? In the US Christian’s don’t really seem to view millionaires and billionaires being sin. They say if you rich you have God blessing and if you poor you have to turn to God and God will help you. The Christian’s in the US are against raising taxes for the rich and against state run universal healthcare, they believe God created rich people and poor people and it just part of society. They say people can volunteer and donate money to help the …

Since Trump sells Bibles, and he calls it his favorite book, why don't his Christian followers face these verses? He has overwhelming support from the Evangelicals and other Christian groups, so why don't they ever face the Antichrist verses from their favorite book? Trump said his favorite Bible verse was "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Of course, liberty for him to escape justice and be the dictator he has fantasized about for so long. THE ANTICHRIST The word "trump" is an abbreviation of "trumpet" associated with the last days, "God's Trumpet" appears in two verses in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, published in 1611, lon…

Was Einstein a Christian? I don’t mean if he claimed to be one. But did his discoveries and how those discoveries manipulate the physical world lead him to believe what other ways the physical world could be made?

commercial link removed by moderator Please note real tawheed as a topic will be one of the hardest ones to understand, and can look wrong/off/illigitimate at first until you start to understand it. the more details/truth you know the more easily you can see the truth in it if you are told lies over truth then something that is supposed to belong now looks like a lie.

God shall be defined as all-encompassing. In other words, eternal. All that exists is God, and God is all that exists. There is no other acceptable definition, and any definition contradicting this is paradoxical. A paradox is an idea which represents incompleteness, e.g. a failure in understanding. If it appears that ideas which are otherwise acceptable exist in contradiction to each other, it shall be assumed that these ideas are incomplete, incoherent, or just plain incorrect. This will not be disputed because it is fact. There is no debating fact where fact is indisputable, and this point, while widely accepted, implies an endemic shortfa…

Some have said that the universe appears to have been designed intelligently and this has been cited as an argument in favour of a divine creator. Arguments have gone something along the lines of "Take the complexity of the human eye, whether it came into being 6000 years ago or evolved over millions upon millions of years, it looks kind of like how we would design a camera." There is a reason this argument falls flat on it's face. The same reason an argument in favour of the chicken coming before the egg would fall flat on it's face. There is a temporal bias at play wherein you see how we have designed things first and you see those same patterns in nature ar…

Most discussion on this forum seems to be about Christianity. But what do you guys think of Islam? My thoughts about it are mixed. I appreciate parts of it like a strong emphasis on charity and support of free market but I dislike other parts of it like death penalty for adultsry, apostasy and blasphemy or a generally lower status of women. What are your thoughts?

I believe in Yeshu the Anointed, a sent Son of the true God. Blessing in the name of Yeshu the Anointed. I am not a scientist, although I am an independent researcher. I do not consider myself a scientist simply because I do not use any scientific method, but rather my own method. Here is one of my proposals on the forum: I understand the points of view of scientists, it seems to me, and yes, science as a discipline of human knowledge contradicts religious beliefs. I think I'm being objective, but one can be wrong. It seems very complicated to me to reconcile science as a discipline of human knowledge with religious beliefs, among other things because de …

Good day. Is there any found causal or relation between the fall of Rome by the middle of first century and the legalization and rise of christianity ? The prosper peaceful 'pax romana' era that had abundant reported wealth in many roman citizens... Where did that people obtained/earned their wealth ? What business were they involved in those times ? There were also the not wealthy population; but what activities not tied to government made the rich rich ? Yes, can be moved to somewhere else as deserved. Into politics, history, lounge...

Allah says (Ye who believe intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination, of Satan's handiwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper. - Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of God, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain?) 90-91]. Allah forbade about drinking wine the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him forbade drinking wine even small amounts , this is confirmed by the verses and hadiths by a thousand and four hundred years But some doctors were claiming that a little wine can be a cure a…

The prophet’s mercy to animals, Even the bird found a place in his heart The prophet’s heart would be shaken to its very foundations if he saw a distressed bird that lost its babies. A wounded animal, a hungry animal, a sick animal , insects burnt, water being polluted moved his heart, too, and stirred his compassion, yet on his shoulder he onus of imparting God’s message to the whole of the world. How great is such a prophet! How miraculous is this prophet! He is the message of heavens to the earth, the message of mercy, the exemplary to be followed. God says in the Holy Quran what means; “you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exemp…

Can science prove God or afterlife? Is there any evidence for that? I'm not asking about an evidence that proves 100% these ,i know it's impossible ,i'm asking that kind of proofs that increases the chances of a God to exist . If not ,then science disproves God?

When I first read the Bible (at the age of 30), when I came this "Introduction to Romans", I got the idea into my head that Jesus had been added to (interpolated into) the text by someone other than the original author. That the original text was: Paul called to be an apostle having been set apart to the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through the prophets of Him in the Scriptures Holy. To all those being in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God the Father of us. First indeed, I thank the God of me for all of you, because the faith of you is being proclaimed in all the world. Now my witness is God, whom I ser…

Rather than just rebuttals of far-fetched "designer" claims, how about a thread that concentrates on the evidence that the universe is NOT designed? And in particular, that it's not designed by a god with humans as the object of the exercise. Of course, those opposed are invited to try to rebut the arguments, but it would make more sense if they kept arguments FOR a designer for the other thread, and just posted rebuttals on this one. Here's a few to start with. If a designer wanted to create a home for humans, why did he create a universe so mind-blowingly vast? The only bit that's relevant to humans is one tiny solar system, in a galaxy of 250,000,000,000 st…

At one time many religion where very anti wealthy, rich and big businesses but now it seems so many religions support the ultra rich and big businesses? I believe at one time there where lot of priests and Church’s very anti capitalism and supporting communism because of the class hierarchy of homeless, poor, low income, middle income, upper middle income, upper income, rich, really rich and supper rich and so on and also hoarding of large very large amounts of money. But when the USSR, North Korea and China became evil and anti religion many priests and Church’s started supporting conservative as only way to preserve religion as even liberals well preserve…
