General Philosophy
General philosophical discussions.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Hey guys what is you opinion on this: Perception what is it? It is the way we view things, the reason some people can learn better than others because they perceive it worth learning where as others do not so they will put less effort to the task and are less likely to remember what it is they are learning. perception is what makes us able to view the world and see things as we do but what would it be like without perception? Maybe it would be a world without mental barriers like seeing everything as a blank canvas and just being able paint anything any time. Maybe the reason people can… say do advanced math in their heads because they can perceive it not as a sum …

This topic imposes the idea that all of us presupposes. We are bias of our own worldviews. Example, for a scientist, he is a presuppositional being who presupposes for example that an things if drop will always go to the ground because of gravity. He presupposes that it will also happen in the future, but there is no evidence for the scientist that it will happen nor he can predict it. He just presupposes. He has only a faith that it will happen. Scientist can't really know that things still fall to the ground in the future because his knowledge is finite or limited only. I want to explain more but let me begin by this introduction.

For ease of modern reference, I am going with the Greek source; ψυχή (psyche) . The 'English root ' seems obscure and relates to specific past concepts which may not be generally relevant to the 'modern western person' ; " The Modern English word "soul", derived from Old English sáwol, sáwel, was first attested in the 8th-century poem Beowulf v. 2820 and in the Vespasian Psalter 77.50. It is cognate with other German and Baltic terms for the same idea, including Gothic saiwala, Old High German sêula, sêla, Old Saxon sêola, Old Low Franconian sêla, sîla, Old Norse sála and Lithuanian siela. Further etymology of the Germanic word is uncertain. The original con…

It is the inherent nature of all things that they are a compilation of two different and distinct things. It is axiomatic that these two things are space and value. The value of any given thing being what it is, while the space is what it occupies. It is true that, abstract or otherwise numbers are a thing, therefore they must also contain a compilation of space and value. It is an axiomatic truth that space is the labeling of quantities of dimensions. It is an axiomatic truth that value is the labeling of quantities of existence, other than dimensions. It is an axiomatic truth that space and value exist in one of two forms. So that any given quantity of s…

When you’re outside and you push the send button on the screen of your smartphone to send a message to someone, the smartphone sends this message in every direction from your smartphone in order for your smartphone to reach the nearest cell-tower. This message in every direction must have a weight bigger than zero in every direction. Because what weighs zero or nothing is nothing and nothing can only remain itself. And when this message in every direction has a weight bigger than zero in every direction, for not being nothing, one can see this message in every direction as very tiny bullets that leave your smartphone in every direction at high sp…

Some scientists say that space and time didn’t always exist and that it was the absence of time and the absence of space that led to the presence of time and the presence of space with the big bang. So let’s take a closer look at the absence of time. How long was the absence of time able to remain itself before it became the presence of time? Since the absence of time isn’t any period of time it ends at the same time as it begins. The end is the beginning. The absence of time became the presence of time at the same time the absence of time began and so the absence of time is always the presence of time and that makes the presence of time dominant. In other…

"intellectual conscience"---the ability to distinguish right from wrong in the intellectual realm (My words.). When I set out to read Nietzsche (in English), after reading repeated references here, there and, yes, everywhere, I decided that I would do it with the following in mind: I would not read second-party analysis; I would read the originals only; and that I would read mulitple translations, which I did for a few. One particular passage I've always liked--I call it a lamentation--concerns the intellectual conscience: . From The Gay Science, BOOK I, #2, by Friedrich W. Nietzsche. (Possible translator, Walter Kaufmann, 1974. Alternate titles: The Joyful Wisdo…

Can we imagine at least theoretically and scientifically a conscious creature which is completely invulnerable to any kind of harm or destruction? That no one and ever would be able inflicting a pain or cause a suffering to such a creature? Isn't possibility to become such a creature the ultimate aim of human existence and scientific exploration?

Spherical earth dates as far as 6th century BC where it appeared in greek philosophy. It remained a speculation untill the 3rd century when hellenists established the spherical earth as a physical given. This alone is an astounding example of a large discrepancy between scientific and technological advancement and human mentality not being able to keep up. It seems that over the period of the last couple of thousand years we’ve made several, huge leaps in science and technology and ended up in 2017 with quantum computing, advanced genetics, silicon technology rulling the earth and the space in our solar system but mentally we are not keeping up with for example reli…

I practiced psychology through the use of the mystery method. My wife, a doctor in psychology, hates this blemish on my reputation and fears that I still perform (which I do, but not the same way). It truly is an abomination what Mystery did to a lot of innocent lives, including my own. The difference with me is that I'm an apex anomaly and my fortitude is other worldly. Anyways, here is my noted system. I call it a method of gaining a strategic advantage (a lot of stuff in the mystery method worked so I kept it). I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if it requires revision or more work in any way. Specifically designed to help you achieve a strateg…

Dear All, Following is an article that I published very recently. Like to hear your view on this. Thanks! Multiple Personality Disorder Also Known As Dissociative Identity Disorder: The definition of the illness: http://www.minddisorders.com/Del-Fi/Dissociative-identity-disorder.html “Previously known as multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a condition in which a person has more than one distinct identity or personality state. At least two of these personalities repeatedly assert themselves to control the affected person’s behavior. Each personality state has a distinct name, past, identity, and self-image.” …

We can think that there is a purpose for why we are here also somebody could also think there is no purpose at all. For you, I just want to ask, which is more valid base on evidences, purpose or no purpose?(For me purpose-I will provide the justification of it but let me know your part first if it is ok) Thank you

This thread was inspired by the recent long philosopy thread and by Edward De Bono. The discussion is about the difference between mathematical proof and scientific proof. One form of proof that is available in Mathematics but best avoided in Science is that of showing the negation of a proposition leads to a contradiction vis-a-vis some more basic statement. For example the proposition that gravity causes objects to fall to the ground is false. I struggle up a podium lugging a large ball. I stretch, holding the ball out and shout to an assistant standing below "Catch" I then drop the ball But instead of falling the ball shoots upwards.…

I'm sorry if what I say is complete nonsense as I I don't know too much about sience, but if everything that begins and everything that is ends eventually, has it really ever existed? There's no time to go back in, there's nothing left of existence. So there isn't anything it could have been into. This also gave me another thought, as everything that can be will be. What if time was actually a loop?. I mean what if when everything that could be has been and instead of existence of everything just ceasing to be, it all begins again. I'm not good at putting my thoughts into words and my english isn't too good but I hope you still can understand what I'm trying to …

What is nothing? I mean the real or actual nothing. Quantum fluctuations is somewhat not nothing but something. It is pseudo-nothing. Actual nothing lacks space-time, matter, quantum states, laws of physics and information, -completely nothing. In other words, actual nothing can never create something. Any counter arguments is very welcome. Let's discuss it here for the accumulation of understanding on the reality which we exist.

There have been a couple good threads recently which deal with awareness and consciousness which has gotten me thinking a bit about the function of consciousness and what it actually does and doesn't do. I consciously reason and make choices in life but only after I have unconciously interpreted things. I know instantaneously without any thought what I do and don't want or how I feel about everything. My consciousness chooses an action but the action chosen seldom ever changes what I want or feel. Simply examples of this happen all day everyday. While walking down the street I see a jacket in a store window and immediately am aware that I want it. The desire to have i…

I am psychotically enraged and I am on the mission here to destroy the moral version of good and bad since it has mocked and insulted me long enough. It is deluded ignorant nonsense to say to a severely crippled depressed person that he/she can still have good meaning in his/her life. The moral version of good says that if we personally judge our lives to have good meaning through our thoughts, then that will make it so. But this is nonsense because this would mean that we could go up to a severely crippled depressed person and say in a joyful/excited tone: "Yipee! Your life is so wonderful since you told yourself that your life was great! Forget the fact tha…

In the 1970s, the USA switched to a fiat currency system. Today's U.S. dollar isn't backed by anything. So why is gold still valuable? The current price of gold is about $1,290 per troy ounce, according to this source: http://www.apmex.com/spotprices/gold-price Gold is so valuable that, unless you're dealing exclusively in $100 or $50 bills, the equivalent value in paper money would actually weight MORE than the equivalent value in gold! Each U.S. banknote weights 1 gram, and there are approximately 31.105 grams in a troy ounce, so if you were dealing in denominations of $20 or less, it would take at least 65 banknotes (or twice the weight of a troy ounce) to co…

I am new to this site, and I would not think of myself as a philosopher, but I thought of the meaning of life. I couldn't find any other place to put the idea to the public, and I think I made the right choice. The meaning of life is to improve. Improve on whatever you want, but as long as you improve on something that would make the world better in your eyes, it gives your life meaning. Now fellow philosophers give me your thoughts on this idea, was it too vague, or it doesn't make sense?

I believe that life is a long chain of chemical reactions. Therefore, when we die, the electrical impulses in our brains (and any other reactions occurring in our bodies) are converted into other forms of energy and are recycled back into the universe. I think death is something like a dreamless sleep. We close our eyes, everything goes black, and we simply cease to exist. I know it sounds depressing, but it's the scenario that makes the most logical sense to me. The part I am struggling with is how to come to terms with this idea of what death is. It upsets me to think about it because it makes me feel like we're living out our lives just to be forgotten. I know I will e…

There is, in my estimation a 100% chance that the Sun will rise tomorrow. I may die, it might be cloudy, there could be nuclear winter, a meteor bound to split the Earth could be on its way, but the only thing that could stop the Earth from turning away from the Sun tonight, and toward the Sun again tomorrow is some Cosmic burst that would be so powerful and violent as to blow the Earth or Sun to bits, in which case we would not be around to notice I was wrong, as the definition of tomorrow would be moot. and the burst would have arrived at the speed of light, with no warning and brought the turning of Earth, or the integrity of the Earth immediately to a halt. So no …
