I realise this is a bit late, but I don't always see status updates straight away. Congrats! He's beautiful.

  2. Shut down by hypervalent_iodine. Some people are allergic and most people dont care. No one is following this anyways. How many points am I allowed?

As swansont mentioned, all we ask is that you follow the rules. If this isn't an appealing prospect to you, you are welcome to leave.

  3. Its not a discussion if you dont listen. Its more like oppression is what I get from this site. Just like when people pretend that air is not matter and only see it as air.

Hi. We have a section of the forum dedicated to letting members test out these functions. See here

  6. Turn up - arrive at a conference.

Turn out - end up with a certain result.

Right? Check nr 2 here: https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/turn+out

So it turns out that my command of idioms in the English language is not so great. Or is that dictionary stating some unused dead form of the „turn out” phrase and it might turn out that I’m not in the wrong here? Does anybody use „I didn’t rurn out at that function on Sunday”?

    @StringJunky, @Phi for All, @Strange, @John Cuthber

I know this is late to the party, but I would say turn up if speaking in first person. The example given in nr 2 of your link reads perfectly fine to me though. I believe the main difference is how many people you are referring to. I cannot think of an example where you would use turn out to refer to one person. Also, generally speaking there is a difference in the implication of something that is planned (as in turned out) vs something that came about unexpectedly (as in turned up), although this is not so much the case in the way you have used it here.

  7. So there's this gene, IDH1. It's responsible for the production of the protein IDH1.

    An c.395G>A mutation in IDH1 leads to p.R132H IDH1.

So if a tumour is IDH1-mutated, can I say IDH1 is mutated? Or is "aberrant" more preferable?

What do I call "p.R132H" if it is not a mutation?

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

I guess it depends on whether or not the mutation in gene sequence leads to a change in the amino acid sequence. In your example, yes, though I believe convention with proteins is to only capitalise the first letter, making it an R132H Idh1 mutant. I may be wrong in that though. Edit: just realised that the capitalisation is species dependant. I work with fungi, where you don't capitalise every letter, but I believe you do with humans. Go figure.

  8. Man, it is hard to get hold of an administrator here! Anyways, I have ideas for your forum!

To attract new traffic to your site, so that more people want to advertise, you could include a new forum called 'bright sparks' or 'patents by law' or something? If you get the people posting their ideas here, like new products they want to perfect or assemble, but need help, they will all run here! This will be where you will need a simple contract written up by the court, through a lawyer, costing about a hundred dollars, where if it is posted here, it remains your property, and the rights of those posting on it, if you will?

Then, as an aside, you would get more traffic if you had two more forums, humanities, like for psychology and culture, and language and teaching and stuff, and, one for finance, hey?

Thanks for reading this, sorry, you seem to be the only one around at any given time...

Could you please send me PM’s in future. I don’t look at my profile often and don’t get notifications when people post to it.

      Thank you for your suggestions.

  9. How do I delete my account? I was thinking of asking an administrator or moderator but they are probably too busy moderation or doing administration. i did not want to burden them with questions. I want to delete it because I'm not sure how much im going to use it. I used it a lot in college but now I work a lot and i dont have as much time to pursue my interest in science.

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

Sorry, I don't get email notifications about people posting statuses on my profile, so I frequently do not see them. I'd suggest using PM next time.

You cannot delete your account, and anything you have posted here will remain. As Phi suggested, we can ban you if you would like, or you could simply change your password to something you won't remember and log out. .

  10. Hello there. Would it be okay to write about 'kissing techniques,' as that is 'kosher?' I mean, I can keep it clean, but, I would like some feedback on these ways I have developed to see what others think?

I don't want to break any rules, so if the answer is no, I will understand. It is scientific as it embraces the sciences of biology and music, or, 'melodious mathematics.'

    Thanks all the same.

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

Looks like it was hidden, yes. It was largely nonsense, so I'm not sure what you expected.

I suppose it’s not against the rules, but it’s a bit odd. I would suggest a more rigorous approach to any thread as compared to, well,  virtually all of your previous ones.

  12. I just read your post on Mordreds feed about the dielectric field in star trek. You sir made my day, LoL !

  13. Tried to rescue a Bee today...  I am way too soppy...  I fished it out of a pool of water that was probably alkaline due to the cement. I hope the little fella/girl is OK.  I put it on a leaf over the fence but it fell into the bushes.  It seemed to have some strength left in it so it might survive.  Just gotta leave it and hope it survives - it probably has more chance in the bushes than it did in the cement water.

I do this a lot with bees - I never know if they survive or not... some are just too weak. I have tried sugar solution in the past with varying successes and fail rates - Sometimes they tuck in and sometimes they are too far gone..

I guess every little helps.  :-(

I do this often with snails and lizards if I think they are in danger of people crushing them. It's important to be mindful of the little things, I think. :)

  15. Hi Hypervalent_iodine,

The other 3 science forums below that I posted this on didn't get linked back to the OP, especially as I tested all the links before I posted on all 4 sites.

Can you please restore the correct links in the OP on the following thread and ask the moderators not to change them. You can remove my reply after the links are restored if you like.

  16. Do you routinely stop participating in threads when you've been handed your ass? When may I expect a proper response to my repeated queries in the thread on planetary energy? Too frightened to continue discussion?

Area54, I hardly think this is appropriate. Please use your better judgement when engaging with members here, and refrain from acting so hostile.

  19. image.thumb.png.dd6b493a7fa16a2f2add3207ae892c14.pngThe first post was made on December 31, 1969.

Then the site sat idle for the next 33 years until 2002.

And I'm assuming that's a glitch. Check out the forum announcement and go to page 7...

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

I think it's just a glitch with how the old software used to handle people posting who didn't register for the site. You'll see it all over the forum if you go back far enough. That one was possibly the first thread by one of the site owners past or present. However, I think the first post / thread to stick around was this:

It's actually the 4th thread on SFN, but the preceding 3 seem to not exist.

We only ban people for persistent of egregious violations of the rules, not for posting topics that spark debate. You could always start a thread with a synopsis of the film.

Apparently the HRMS we have is actually in the $2.5mill dollar range. Taken down (hopefully temporarily) by one single possum. I wonder if he knows how much power he has?

  24. There is a flaw in the forum engine. I am unable to open a thread in the trash can section of the forum. I would like to be able to do that to lure some of the users to discuss things there...like Pymander & John Lesser.

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

The trash can isn't there for members to post in. It's there for staff to move posts and threads that don't belong anywhere but. Having it open to members would be pandemonium, since the whole point is that the threads there are utter rubbish, deemed not suitable for discussion.

Furthermore, I find your attitude disheartening. As frustrating as some members are, you should always hope that they improve rather than continue as is or get worse.

  25. I overheard a particularly incompetant colleague of mine tell another student that you 'learn through mistakes,' just now. Whille I believe the statement to be true, if all you ever do is make mistakes (as he does), then have you really learned anything?

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

I think one naturally follows from the other. If you're convinced that you're better than you actually are, it's reasonable that you aren't going to assess mistakes as being your fault / responsibility and something to learn from.
