  1. I overheard a particularly incompetant colleague of mine tell another student that you 'learn through mistakes,' just now. Whille I believe the statement to be true, if all you ever do is make mistakes (as he does), then have you really learned anything?

Well, yes. That much should have been fairly obvious given the fact that a.) I didn't say this comment in particular is what made him incompetent and, b.) my subsequent analogies.

This particular person is someone I think the person who wrote the wiki article on the Dunning Kruger affect had in mind when they authored it. He rarely makes the same exact mistake twice, but his lack of fundamental understanding and belief that he knows it all is quite alarming for a final year PhD student. Last year I had to allay a genuine concern he had that a drying agent, phosphorus pentoxide, would release HCl into his vacuum manifold. Note the lack of chlorine anywhere in that molec...

  4. If my body font is Times New Roman, 10.5 pt, 1.15 spacing, then what should table/figure caption content size/spacing be like?

    1. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

In my experience, universities usually have pretty strict limits on spacing. I tend to go 1.5x.

TNR is still the commonly used font for where I am. Typically I use size 12 for the body and 10 for captions. 10.5 for the body seems quite small to me.

  6. A paper accepted and another submitted, and it's not even lunch time! on a roll today!

  7. Today is a good day. I had my first publication accepted and have been asked by the editors to use my artwork for the cover of the issue. Moderate success!

  8. Will someone let Viper-Malevolent Turpentine she/he/it was a month late in closing water/hydroxide masers in the chemistry forum!

  9. Started training for a 100 km in 48 hr hike today. My legs aren't sure what they did to deserve this, but at least my fundraising efforts are going well.

We've been training every weekend so far, though I've had to skip a couple because of my ankle injury. I was in a hiking shop the other day to get the people there to double check my shoes fit well. The lady there told me that a lot of people would come in the day before to buy new equipment, having done no training at all. I can't even imagine doing that.

I was recommended some peppermint balm by the same store person, which I'm trying today on the second section...

Non-cotton everything is on my list, as it happens. Good tip on the sudocreme, thanks. I had read about using it not long ago as a cheaper and just-as-good alternative to body glide. I was going to trial both, but if you think that Sudocreme is the way to go, I'll just save my money / invest in more moleskin.

I'll have to see if anyone from my team can go, since I can't. I'll be sure to pass on any info they get should they attend.

Yeah. I've read the same as you. I have a few pairs of non-cotton Injinji toe socks to act as liners.

I live in Brisbane, so the trail is right on my doorstep. We've been training on the sections so far and most of us do a lot of cycling and walking outside of that. I am starting to do the last section most evenings and mornings, since it's very easy to get to and close by my house / public transport.

This is the trail, if anyone's interested: https://trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/brisbane/trail

And Acme, one thing I forgot to mention was also to cover your feet in body glide or diaper cream. Also non-woollen liner socks. Some places recommend corn starch or talc, but it seems to me that would get damp pretty quick and cause more problems over such a long distance.

They said that it can roll up or get creased, which is where it will cause issues. My tape didn't roll up or really crease, but I wonder if the sneakers constantly rubbing against the tape loosened its grip a little and so the tape ended up rubbing the skin in all sorts of horrible ways. I have a list of recommendations from them somewhere. They recommended applying some balsam and Fixomull to feet prior to walking, that smooth non-calloused feet are ideal and you should treat hot spots a...

It was something we were told by some podiatrists at an info session a week ago. Turned out to be correct for me at least.

Taping is actually really bad for blisters. I had it taped yesterday and got a rather impressive one on the back of my heel.

It's the same one here, I think. I was only able to start training this week because I partially tore the ligaments in my ankle a few weeks ago. Bodes well for my future.
