  1. Hi. I am facing a decision on which I could do with some advice. I am currently working in two jobs. One is a company that manufactures and sells 3D printers (the type that prints from plastic filaments). The other company makes money by running a bitcoin mining pool. I'm looking to only keep one of those jobs, as it would be somewhat more practical for me. I'm wondering which one of those two jobs is less unacceptable from ecological standpoint. Intuitively I'm leaning towards 3D printing being less bad, since bitcoin (esp. bitcoin mining) consumes ridiculous amounts of power, but it's kind of hard to say and there are multiple factors in play. …

  2. According to Scott Denning, prof. of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University, we don't need to worry about the world's oxygen supply, despite of the thousands of wild fires in the Amazon and other places around the world. https://theconversation.com/amazon-fires-are-destructive-but-they-arent-depleting-earths-oxygen-supply-122369

Hi everyone, This is my first time on this site. I am doing this for a science project. I am wondering what everyone thinks would be the most sustainable type of renewable resource? There, of course, is Wind energy which there are certain parts of the world where there is a lot of wind, but how do we store and export that energy. Another option is Hydro if we take rivers and build dams that pass the water through water wheels it is the same problem as wind, how do we store and export. Now my personal favorite is solar, the one main problem with this is how long each day is and how direct is the sun. Yet again we have the same problem with storing and exporting. Hope every…

https://phys.org/news/2019-05-dome-pacific-nuclear-coffin-leaking.html Under the dome: Fears Pacific nuclear 'coffin' is leaking: As nuclear explosions go, the US "Cactus" bomb test in May 1958 was relatively small—but it has left a lasting legacy for the Marshall Islands in a dome-shaped radioactive dump. The dome—described by a UN chief Antonio Guterres as "a kind of coffin"—was built two decades after the blast in the Pacific ocean region. The US military filled the bomb crater on Runit island with radioactive waste, capped it with concrete, and told displaced residents of the Pacific's remote Enewetak atoll they could safely return home. But …

I was listening recently to a podcast about bonobos and chimps and how bonobos are much more peaceful and it got me wondering: 1) if there is no violence, how is the status of an alpha male established The guy didn't say that there was absolutely no violence, that's my assumption, so perhaps I'm wrong there and I'm sure that status can be established through games and not direct violence in other species as well, so is it something like that? Does anyone know specifically? 2) How is the status of an alpha male reflected? What exactly distinguishes the alpha male among bonobos from betas?

  7. Good Evening All. I have started this thread to get some unbiased advice and knowledge for the above people. I am fortunately being encouraged through work to look at starting Phase 1 Surveys. However I am looking for some advice there are many companies offering training courses for this but through my personality i want to know opinions of this from experienced an Ecologist. I am looking into doing a Open University course too. Would it help me to do both or would either one suffice. I have struggled to get any advice on this so please any response would help me. I would like to add i am a surveyor but in a unrelated field but thi…

  8. Hello everyone,, Ii'm at a two year school majoring in biology and i want to transfer to a four year school to major in either ecology or environmental science. i took an ecology course and i loved it and i did well. i was looking at the graduation req for rutgers and one big thing i noticed was that for a degree in envi sci, you have to take organic chem, and for ecology you dont. i am leaning towards majoring envi sci. there are a lot of little differences differences with the course titles too i noticed. so whats the main difference between these two sciences?

  9. Found him living behind my drawers. What kind of spider is it? I don't know what kind of spider it is. In any case, if it isn't a long leg, it isn't going to live anywhere near me. I regret smushing its guts all over my clean tile floor, I should have put him in a container with Hector the Brown Recluse. Pennies for scale. I wonder how long he will survive for.

  11. Please I'm running this project topic and my supervisor told me to check how many cells can be found in a 2ml of Chlorella species. At first I thought about a Neubauer counting chamber but he suggested that it can be found online. I'm confused here, please can someone help me? Thanks and I'd appreciate your help.

  12. Hello everybody, this is my first post I am a scuba diver and snorkeler/freediver and I have a very basic question about marine biology I am planning a trip in the Maldives, in other cases it could be Egypt or Philippines. I need a reliable and let me say "scientific" source of information on marine animals behaviour, in this case whale sharks and mantas. Is there a comprehensive and reliable resource on the marine animals (say sharks, mantas, sardines run, etc.) and the "seasons" in which they are more likely to be seen while diving in the different areas of the world? For example, mantas and whale sharks are supposed to be common to se around south Ari a…

This wine glass was sitting in my sink with tap water in it while we were at work. When I got home I noticed this thing suspended within the water. We noticed something similar in my daughter's sippy cup when it was in the sink with water in it one other time. Does anyone have any idea what this is or might be? Thanks in advance.

  15. Has there ever been any studies on the effect of intelligent animals on ecosystems? (excluding modern humans) My hunch is that they would have a stabilising effect because they could shift strategies to fill in niches as they arose and fell quicker than other creatures could normally evolve into them. So the ecosystem could restabilise quicker in response to changes in the environment.

Here in Australia the "proverbial has hit the fan" and a formal health warning has been issued about the contamination of our drinking water due to the presence of lead in our taps/pipes etc. The Gov have released an advisory that we are to flush the tap for 30 seconds when say getting a glass of water or filling the Jug/Kettle. Further advice is to run the tape for 2-3 mins if we have been away from our home for a few days before drinking the water. My Questions - I understand that LEAD is present in the Brass fittings/taps etc but why doesnt it dissipate over time on the surface area of the fittings in contact with water How does it continue to co…

Short: If I put a small plant specifically chosen for air purification in my room, could it help with the air quality significantly? Long: I keep my room door shut to keep house animals out of it, and it gets musty/stale smelling. Opening the window would waste AC/heat. Also, I like the idea of sleeping in a room with "cleaner" air. Cleaner as in more oxygen and/or less contaminants. I envision (and I'm open to changing all of it) a small box with moss (I'm told it has the most leaf mass and therefore cleaning ability), an appropriate grow light, and maybe a slow fan to keep the air circulating over the moss. I've sen some ready solutions on amazon for this. I don't …

  21. If a whale has Almost the same organs as us then why does it need such a big brain? I wouldn’t think for example a bigger colon would require such a large section of brain to control because it would still be the same function just larger size. Also are the neurons bigger? If so that makes even less sense to me.

  22. As far as I know, Porifera (sponges) and Cnidaria (jellyfish, corals and hydroids) can thrive in conditions where oxygen contents are low. Jellyfish, in particular, thrive better in warmer, oxygen-lower water than cooler, oxygen-higher water. And sponges were around when oxygen contents really were lower than they are today. But is that everyone? What other animal phyla, if any, can thrive in water that have low if not no oxygen content at all?

  24. I was just watching that old movie 'Swiss Family Robinson' and quite frankly, during the scene where the two great danes managed to scare off a fully grown tiger, I actually laughed out loud at first. I'd be absolutely astonished if the dogs could take on a tiger and live to bark the tale, but I'm not a Zoologist so I don't know for sure. The tiger might just decide that it's not worth the trouble and flee, but I'm just curious: is there any realistic chance that were a pair of fully grown great danes to viciously attack a tiger to defend their owners, that they would stand any kind of chance of winning? Or even of scaring the tiger away (which is what happened in the mov…

I was talking with my father yesterday and he was talking to me about how cats are the superior and are truly most perfect of all creatures. It got me thinking, what makes an animal superior. The question really is complicated Size? Well It cant be because whales have been hunted to extinction by things much smaller than them, and millions of humans have died because of a bacteria known as the plague, to small to be seen with the naked eye. So that cant be it. Ability to kill other creatures? That would render most plants, many parasites, some would even say herbivorous animals completely obsolete, and we know that cant be the case, also because animals like wha…
