After a recent update to our forum software, typesetting equations on SFN has changed a little bit. Although we are still using LaTeX, for a variety of reasons, we've elected to shift over from our custom-written LaTeX generator to the excellent MathJax library, which will take your equations from post text and render them in your browser. Much as before, the idea is that in your post, you surround equations with special characters, and MathJax will convert the contained text into an equation for you. This is a short guide to using the new LaTeX system that has been implemented on the boards. First off, for those who don't know what LaTeX is, a short description. LaTeX is, to all intents and purposes, a fully fledged math typesetting system - basically put, you can write math with it. Do points lie on tangents lines "only?" From: "The slope of the tangent" Or on the curve itself?? If it's not on the curve, then: Where did that curve come from?? I'm not getting the ideas behind the following. ok so i want to know if there is an easier way to figure out how many times you would have to double a number before getting to certain number. (other then going 2x2x2x2x2x2x2 question two lets say we take the number 1080 is there a way to figure out how many times it had been doubled assuming the start point is 1 what if the starting number was 4 any way to figure that out besides the long way and this is not homework, i was just folding a piece of metal on itself over and over (like Damascus steel but i used indium since its soft and doesn't require heat to get the layers to bond but it also doesnt add any strength i just wanted to see how many layers i cou…

On my site www.constructorscorner.com I have found a way to break any triangle into 2 right triangles and solve it knowing only 2 sides. I know it sounds unlikely and it could be wrong, but if you go to the homepage you will see 2 trig parabola pdf downloads. Did Issac Newton know about numeral systems? IE Bases 10, 2, 1 etc etc? If not then, why do we use them "in calculus today??" Moreover, how can computers compute calculus? Issac Newton didn't have one, or did he?? Was it a Macintosh?? seriously.. This should be a very interesting thread..

A few days ago I solved a challenge I had made myself, and think the division is neat, with a lot of nice symmetries and such, but several searches on the web and I have not found its name, or a breakdown of it, to study the angles and descriptions and such. So I am presenting it here, in the hopes that someone will recognize it, and point me to a link with its description. What is the largest number value in base-10 you can write with just 3 digits? No symbols and characters allowed. Hints: it's not 999 Ask someone to write the largest 3-digit number and they'll respond with 999. Logical answer, but we can go bigger. Some may get the "power" brainwave and think of 999 (99 to the power of 9), which calculates out as 99×99×99×99×99×99×99× 99×99. Even better is 999 (9 to the power of 99) which calculates out as 9×9×9×9×9×9×9 ... and so on 99 times. Hey, I have a question about math. If you take : - 8 = 3/19 n (imagine the 3/19 as a fraction.) you need to find N. To do this you would flip the 3/19 to get 19/3 and put it of the other side of the equation. Getting: 19/3 * -8/1 = n Getting in the end the answer: -152/3 = n How does this give the answer?

I saw this game played first in the classic 1960's French film 'Last Year in Marienbad'. I learnt how to play it to always win, by trial and error. I believe there is also a simple maths algorithm for winning play but I have neither the skill nor patience to figure it out. Can anyone help? The game: For two players. Ok this is a bit of a strange question but this is my last place to turn. Ok High output fans or any fan really is measured by CFM (Cubic feet ,Minute) Ok now what i am interested in is how to convert a fans CFM to actual WINDSPEED MPH I am sure some variables would include the following. Size of Area, Resistance, CFM, and possibly other things. But is there a way to calculate this or is that something that is just impossible. and i would just have to build a wind tunnel and run a fan with X CFM coming out of it in a specific area and then measure windspeed. i would hope not, i would like to think that is a way to mathmatically figure it out …

Does anybody have any ideas on how to work out [imath]\sqrt{0.9}[/imath] without a calculator (to approx 10 d.p.)? I know there are a few methods for working out for working out square roots by hand, but i was wondering if there was a cleverer/easier way of doing it.

For example, I know sine is: x - x^3/3! + x^5/5! - x^7/7! + x^9/9! ... But how would one express 4! without saying 1x2x3x4 so that I can solve such questions as 5.6! I heard that gamma(n-1) = n! , only problem is I dont know anything about gamma, can somebody offer some insight?

So whats the relationship between an angle and its sine? I typed out all the degrees between 0 and 89 into a spread sheet and wrote out the answer then made a graph. Using the mighty powers of excel I got equations for the graph. I had the option of choosing how many polynomials I wanted in my function. here is the one to the order of two: y = -0.0001x2 + 0.0208x - 0.0227 Here is the one to the order of six: y = 2E-13x6 - 4E-11x5 + 6E-09x4 - 1E-06x3 + 5E-06x2 + 0.0174x + 1E-05 each one of these will allow me to put in lets say 10 degrees and get an answer of 0.1753 or 0.17357 or 58 degrees and get an answer 0.88018 or 0.8473 These are app…

Ok I wanted to see if this idea had any potential and I figured if it didn’t it would be shot down in a matter of minutes. This is my final work on the Prime product problem. I know it is just x^2 * y^2 = PNP^2 However the terms would just cancel out. Instead I have decided to let x^2 equal a pattern of x and PNP. So I just substituted the equation which is more complex and will not equal the right side of the equation for x^2. In calculus where you have a complex derivative where you let du/dx equal a portion of the derivative so you can understand and simplify the manipulation of the integral.
