  1. Started by tar,

Happy Mother's day all you Mom's. Saw a thing on my browser just now that said "Celebrate your Mom", "Share something you learned from your Mom." Thought I would like to share a thought or two about my departed mom, and start a thread where others that wished, could do the same. (In the "privacy" of the select group of folk that frequent or pass through Scienceforum.) My Mom was a Mathematician and Teacher, took me and my sister to Presbyterian Church, my father did not attend. She was eccentric, and became more so as she and my Dad diviorced, and she aged. Still substitute taught and moved around throughout the States, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and "retired"…

There is a Doogie Howser (TV show) screenshot that has a picture of Albert Einstein in a poster. However, to date, I cannot find any images that have Albert Einstein looking like this. I cannot tell if it is a real or fake image. Does anyone have an idea what year Albert Einstein would have looked like this:

  3. I found discussion online stating Einstein was really an idiot. A lot of this is saying the fact that we CAN go past the speed of light means that the idea that we could not means that Einstein was stupid or the fact he was a German means he was an idiot since all Germany cares about is destroying Jews. Even if his old Research and ideas are today proven incorrect does that necessarily mean hes a complete moron or just that we are improving on ideas he created?

  4. Hello SFN community, I will not be taking summer classes this year and opting to work on research instead. I am currently a biology and mathematics dual-major. I have no difficulties in determining research for either field, but ideas bridging the two is becoming more of a challenge than I originally expected. Could anyone share ideas they have had for research involving both math and biology? I would greatly appreciate it and would certainly share credit in any presentations in which your ideas became a reality. Michael Rohly

  6. Relative to the major advances in science and technology, what field of science (i.e. medicine, chemistry, engineering) is losing purpose in the world? I was reading on a different science forum about how some medical tests that used to be done in hospitals can be accomplished at the home bedside now and some advanced ones in the next couple of years. - or an even simpler question if you prefer: What college science degree is least likely to attain employment in the future? -My pick is biologist.

Hi. Hope this is not against rules; am trying to buy a few cheap electronic components at an specific store and refuse to pay abusive minimum shipping fees, as am in tight income now, and parts costs do not justify. Or, if anyone knows some sort of web site where this personal kind of contacts can be requested ? Thanks

I normally watch from the sidelines, But i notice in quite a few forums, that a lot of "senior members" use a lot of different accounts, I normally enjoying watching how they argue with themselves, Or gang up when the need arises, I am not just on about this forum, As i have noticed it big time in other forums, Does anyone else notice this in forums they may visit?

  15. I'd hate to pick a fight in relation to people's personal life philosophies; but I'm going to pick a fight. I hope it won't get too bloody. So, I like the transhumanist train of thought in the 21st century. I think we'll learn so much more about ourselves and the universe by expanding upon ourselves with technologies and medicine than researching other things. So, I've been learning about quantum physics and quantum mechanics as of late: I believe I'm start to grasp the mentality required for it. However, I just see a lot of it as pointless. You might say that I'm the kind of person who would say, "Let the world burn if that means the Truth about reality and the unive…

After seeing many topics abandoned or caught in circular argument i wonder how to use them to contribute to the SFN community over the long term. For me science is more than argument. it is about collaboration too. I feel that the answer is in using the friending resources available to us on this site. However i would like to hear what other people think so that i can get a better line of sight upon the subject. What do you think about it?

If you wake up in the morning wondering where you are and hear that you were being an asshole the night before (but not quite an asshole) and was told that you were treating your friend like she was your girlfriend (but not quite like that), should you have anxiety over a night where you completely lack recollection? I didn't know if I should post this but I feel like a complete idiot after last night. I was thinking that someone may have drugged my drink. I had to do a lot of explaining today and I was thinking that people were wayyy over analyzing my behavior. I told them what I was probably thinking (I was treating the girl like family and talking shit with my …

  20. Started by Moontanman,

I had a thought... in the attempt at SETI have the idea of mega structures been discussed anyplace? I know i haven't read much about it if anything. There are some possible mega structures that could be seen across interstellar distances. There is an orbit called a rosette where 5 masses can orbit around a large one if they are all the same distance from each other. last about 5 seconds with out some energy input intelligently directed at keeping them that way, or the idea of a sphere surrounding a star to collect all of it's energy. I have seen some images of proposed space structures humans could make, the recent asteroid that was found to have a ring mad…

I have a pair of miniature National Trust wellington boots at a pen holder that has become encrusted inside with old ink and other detritus from the pens. I am looking for suggestions as to how to clean this out. So far I have tried white spirit petroleum spirit caustic soda, drain cleaner hot persil solution without success Cleaning suggestions welcome. The wellingtons are made of thick pvc or polyethylene.

Just ran across this site, and others might enjoy the humor. In particular, the adventures of Fallacy Man, parts I and II, which has so much relevance for discussions at SFN http://existentialcomics.com/comic/9 http://existentialcomics.com/comic/21 I also liked the Germans playing Monopoly http://existentialcomics.com/comic/19 and Philosophers playing D&D http://existentialcomics.com/comic/23
