  1. Hi all. I’m Sanghyun Baek from Pluto.Network, a team in South Korea developing a decentralized application (DApp) for Scholarly Communication (ScholComm) with the aid of blockchains.Basically we plan to establish a NON-PROFIT foundation to innovate the ScholComm space. I’m posting this to introduce our core concepts, explain the current stage, and get some feedback on it. If you already well recognize the need of decentralizing current journal system, skip the rest and read the design document linked at the end of this post for the detailed design of our concept. The background is very straightforward. Current ScholComm system is an Owned Business. And we believe it should…

So I sometimes do freelance programming work and I got an email last night I am kind of worried about. Whoever it is wants to hire a black-hat hacker to hack a university for $1000 which I definitely wouldn't do but I don't want whoever this student is finding somebody who might do not so nice things to them.

Hi. My friend has been through a hard time and is suffering who has been through a lot of abuse. She is looking for video clips that give a happy type feeling or vibe. She liked the bit of this video starting at 5:27 but mostly liked the 5:39 bit (when they are all floating and morphing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_OYbV2Mo8s Do you know of any video clip that brings happy /cozy/ etc feeling's. Or something like the floating and morphing part in the video above?. Any input or help is greatly appreciated. And may you please describe something that would make her feel cozy or happy. Thank you very much.

After some talks with two moderators at the site, I quickly came to realise my terrninology was actually offensive under the surface, which was much deeper than I intended at the time. I won't defend myself again, this is a public post to say, I recognise that behaviour should not be tolerated and my words to you about not wanting to talk or commune over the subjects here, can come to an end. I am sorry and it won't happen again. regards. G. Lee

So much food comes in some form of packaging - from supermarkets and food outlets - that it represents a huge waste stream. A lot of it is - technically - recyclable, but a lot of food packaging ends up contaminated with food residues and almost all recycling, even when it's done well, is more correctly downcycling. ie materials can be re-used only at lesser quality and usually only a few times before ending up unusable. Separation of biological waste from other kinds of waste seems to me to be the most basic kind of separation and biological waste is the kind that can be most completely and efficiently recycled, via biological means. I can see that the kinds o…

  11. How unhealthy would it be to go to sleep every day with the windows closed? Would the lack of air give me headaches in the morning? Or is it fine? On another note, it would probably be better to sleep with earplugs, but they always give me headaches when used for a couple of hours + it's finicky when you have an alarm clock to wake you up.

Which games are you playing or are you going to play? I'm going to play Assassin's Creed Empire. And I just heard on a YouTube video Bethesda might be making a Game of Thrones RPG.

I've always been a fan of Ray's. I read his book and love his ideas and the product of his labor. It's truly amazing to see what Google is doing with AI under his leadership, but... It's just hear say at this point but it's nothing I didn't suspect from him. Allegedly he weaseled his way into the upper echelon. I guess it doesn't matter much but it is kind of humiliating to hear that you believed in a fraud, especially when all of Google's products involving AI are so game changing. I, for one, am utterly embarrassed because I am inclined to believe it, as are other highly respected people. It's eerily quiet when it comes to rejecting this notion.

  14. This thread concerns a discussion about why physicist need to study consciousness, and probably involve themselves in the development of artificial general intelligence. Firstly, below is a scintillating talk on artificial general intelligence given by, Theoretical Physics PHD, and former Dwave CTO, Geordie Rose. He left Dwave, and is now instead CEO and co-founder of Kindred Ai. He gives an entertaining talk in the tech-vancouver video below, about why the development of artificial general intelligence is crucial for mankind. Extra: See also a talk here, by Suzanne Gildert here (She also left Dwave, to start Kindred Ai. She has an Quantum Physics PHD…

  15. In case you hadn't noticed by the number of internet rules and self proclaimed "trolls" there are, the internet brings out the absolute worst most perverse and downright awful side of humanity. Please note that this discussion is not to simply "diss" humanity, it is a legitimate intellectual discussion started by me to discuss thoughts on why this is using rational thought; in other words this is no place for politics or any hotheaded spewings about how you, like everyone else are treated quite poorly online. I personally think that it comes down to this: Anonymity basically turns off inhibitors that keep all that nasty irrational anger and perverse thoughts a…

Hello forum, I hope this doesn't offend anyone but I just wanted to look back at the fun aspect of this forum and many times that is caused by specific members either on purpose or not. One recently fun occurrence on the forum is how Sherado has threatened to put more people on his ignore list than I had bad days. Other members like Handy Andy and Roger Dynamic Motion have very original Ideas which sometimes cause amusement especially when a serious member who is ready to talk about facts and science comes back after their post with sentences like: "And now back in the world of science:" Another gold nugget is from a member that refused to listen to r…

Today is the s***iest day of the semester. I got the assignment of writing an interpretative essay on War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. So raising the question: Why is this "necessary" for a chemistry degree? What do I learn from it? Better writing skills? No. I have no need to "perfect" my writing skills because I can write perfectly well already. The degree of "Writing perfection" that schools demand is preposterous and frankly whoever thought "Let's make students who don't give a flaming flying pigs**t about perfecting their writing write long essays that have been written millions of different ways for no intensive purpose whatsoever" should be drawn and quartered if they…

Post an experience with a pet that was important to you. We had a good, long experience with a family of 2 cat sisters, and a little dog (the same size as the cats) for 14 years. The cats lived to 20 and almost 22, the dog lived to almost 15. This is what happened to me with one of our cats. She liked to explore the back yard. She, and her sister, would beg to go into the backyard. I tried to supervise as much as I could but she and her sister would get left alone, and even though they could escape the block wall around the back yard, they didn't. We restricted their time outdoors more over time, because of the dangers of wondering off. Our cat was waiting…

If/when fusion energy is actually developed, what would most likely be the economic model? My understand is that if we were to create a fusion process that it would be a plentiful amount, and would be a huge supply. So would energy be cheaper or would it be priced as more expensive? Reasons? ~ee
