Our cephalopod overlords have begun their assault on land, only a matter of time now! The extreme tides in the area seem to be a forcing factor for this species.

Do you feel Escalator racing game can be introduced in future Olympics games? There will be two categories 1 Bottom to Top escalator race. 2 Top to Bottom escalator race. There will be 8-10 escalators depending upon the number of participants representing their country. 150 steps of same constant moving staircase speed in the 8-10 escalators. Skills required will be speed, balance, concentration & focus for the participants. Thanks & Regards, Prashant S Akerkar

Who was the best James Bond? Below are my impressions of all 6 who have played bond. Sean Connery - Everyone's default #1 choice. While Connery had the most impressive body of work through his long career his Bond films themselves often appeared cheaply made (Thunderball being an exception) and were rather silly. Austin Powers satire of them was so hilarious in part because of how accurate it was. Sean Connery in my opinion is far and away the best actor to play Bond but wasn't the best Bond. George Lazenby - I have never seen his Bond film in its entirety so I can't judge. Roger Moore - First Bond I saw. I think who was Bond in the first Bond mov…

So, guys, what are your thoughts on Noam Chomsky? Regarding his linguistic work, I am not a linguist, but I happen to know something about linguistics, so perhaps I an have some opinion about that. I don't really see why is he so famous. Linguistics, like any science, should be based on falsifiable theories, and I don't really see what would falsify his theories. Also, his claim that languages are not learned primarily by experience and inductive reasoning, but by some innate linguistics capacity, really bothers me. The simple fact is, a layman who tries to reason about language usually gets things wrong. For example, the names of some Croatian rivers are Krka, Korana, …

Which is the better franchise? And why. I know it's not quite comparing like for like, one's sci fi and mainly a series the other is space opera and mainly films, but still, just for fun. I've not watched the newest Star Trek offerings, or seen the Star Wars series but here's some of my thoughts. For Star Trek Star Trek actually explores alien cultures, Star Wars just shows them. Its aspiration for humanity clear and well communicated. Solves many (perhaps too many) problems by using 'science'.- you know, realigning the warp core manifolds to increase the power output of the deflector dish. Really celebrates science. Spock.…

I'm watching this video with Quine and at around 1:29:00 he's talking about mathematical logic and he says how it was once "this trivial, stamp collecting offshoot of serious mathematics for pedants and playboys" until it became relevant for computer science. Now, I think I understand his general point, what I'm curious about is: 1) why does he call it a "stamp collecting" offshoot lol How was mathematical logic an activity akin to stamp collecting? 2) I get "pedants", but how was it the activity of "playboys" lol

Retailers often claim Amazon is going to put them out of business. They also said that about Costco and Home Depot, but even those big box retailers complain that Amazon eats too much into their brick and mortar business market. Part of me loves Amazon, since it let's me (seemingly) disconnect from the mainstream consumer train, only buying exactly what I need without having to mess with travel to a bunch of brick stores, being inundated by the general marketing once I'm there, and having to deal with all the people who dislike their jobs because of poor pay (because their employer has to compete with Amazon?). It pleases me to think Amazon knows who has just what I…

So a friend of mine who owns and runs a couple of local pharmacies got divorced recently. We have sit downs from time to time to exchange knowledge - I give him some physics, he gives me chemistry/biology. He's back on the dating market, he recently (hes 44) met a girl (35) at some party, they ended up on his porch watching the stars on a stary night. She inquired that the stars look so beautiful but they're probably very far away - like 200km far away. She also asked him what is Oligocen water (theres a lot of wells here, everybody knows/uses them), weather it is called "Oligocen" because its holy water or maybe something else. The end.

I would like to propose a numerically measure for quality of post, our likiness to be a crackpot (trends of this ratio are likely to be a key predictor). The misconception ratio = number is misconceptions / number of words (units are cracks) As this tends to 1 as I tend to hit my head on the desk. I'd speculate that 0.01 cracks is a general upper limit for a post, although would value some input and analysis of real posts... I'd also like to know a warning level, no one is going to have a value of 0 cracks for all of their writings but is 1 millicracks acceptable?
