So normally it takes months to build a good reputation as any good experienced member will tell you, but often times the reputation system is abused for emotional purposes while the reputation itself doesn't seem to have a logical place in concluding of something is logical or not, so instead I propose a new type of reputation system: Instead of having "I like how you talk, therefore you are logical and a good scientist" and "I don't like how you talk, therefore you are illogical and are a bad scientist" and all sorts of other non scientific uses r illogical fallacies, we simply have a button for each post that you can press that says "This post answers your current in…

If you have the last reply in a thread, and you post again, the system merges your new post to the previous one. Unfortunately any delay in the system during that time can cause the user to wonder if the system has recognized their input, and during this time they may click on the Post button again. An example of this may be seen in the 3rd and 4th quote-and-reply sections of this post. I've played around with this a bit and found that it's very easy to reproduce the behavior. Sounds like a results oriented philosophy. We are afraid of the 1.6 billion Muslims so, for god's sake, let's not be critical. A thread I participated was closed due because I essentially shared legitimate science being done in a science forum. This site is ridiculous.

I'm curious as to what might be the motive for today's attempt to flood the forum with spam. We've had these in the past from time to time. It can't be to advertise a service or a scam, because of the random subject matter. Can this be an individual with a grudge against the forum, or something like that? Seems pretty pointless and ineffective.

I think only Cowards give motivated negative Clicks on Posts without any rhyme or reason ! To avoid this bad trend those who give negative Clicks must be shown with the reason behind it. Then it will be a fair game and at least one can make out who is a friend or an enemy ! For the same reason I have reset my friends list and will wait for anyone to add me as a friend as against my adding friends which I did earlier ! Also, I do remember those who had not accepted my invite earlier and those who had removed themselves from the list. I don't believe in forcing anyone. Perhaps I might still have some courageous friends standing up for me !

This has been brought up before, but I would like to gather some consensus from members as to what is wanted so that I may do something about it (or not, as the case may be). Do you think the ability to down vote posts / statuses should be removed (and why)? It has been a bit more problematic with this new update, as we can no longer set independent limits on how much negative rep a person can give in a day. That being said, I think it can still serve a valuable purpose in separating the wheat from the chaff, and can give newer members an immediate sense of what we accept as a community, as well as giving an indication as to the scientific veracity of certain …

You know, since I participated in this forum I found out that reputations shouldn`t be a function for members in this forum. Voting someone`s post down is really hurting someone sometimes. Maybe I don`t take it for granted, but others do. So, I urge the administrator to reconsider whether it is a must to remove this function because this reputation points can`t just tell you how famous or how well a member has done. You can see the words but somehow you can`t see the face.

I am blown away by the censorship in the forum. I have a message apologizing for a warning and an explanation from the mod that the action was taken without reading carefully. I think that just happened again, only instead of a warning the thread about Hitler and science, correcting a public broadcasting show last night, was closed. There could not be a worse offense to the very reason for our protected freedom of speech, than this kind of censorship.
