We ask that if you have an issue with moderation you use the report post function rather than further derail a thread, and we thank everyone for doing so. This thread can be used as a response for communication by the staff, to further clarify the actions. ____ http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/72856-how-many-photonscm3/page-3#entry729892 The post was a hijack with non-mainstream physics ("heavy photons"), though that remark has since been edited; mechanisms for creating and annihilating photons is (currently) beyond its scope. The thread in question was not split off from an existing thread (as the report claimed), though it would not matter — discussion…

How do you do those quotes. If i try to quote 2 people the page changes with only one quote ? and you have a picture as an avatar. How do you do that?

  4. The quote function - a brief tutorial; although I expect/hope that this might grow into a thread as other members explain techniques and tricks that I don't know about. 1. Plain Quote Box The simplest form of quotation is used to make it clear that some text is copied from elsewhere and isn't yours - a link or source is expected as well. From Wikipedia page on Plagiarism - here a. Copy text from source b. Paste - you can just right-click / ctrl-v or you can use the paste plain text button if you want to remove formatting and hyperlinks c. Highlight the text - click the quote button d. Go back to source and copy webpage address e. Paste this into your post…

Michel, very interesting. Could you tell me how you were able to insert your hand-sketch in your post? I'd like to try that.

Since the topic comes up every so often, here's a good summary on why internet moderation (among other things, like boycotts) is not a violation of free speech rights http://xkcd.com/1357/

  7. So. If you were in charge, what would you change about the new ScienceForums.Net?

  8. Started by SamBridge,

So normally it takes months to build a good reputation as any good experienced member will tell you, but often times the reputation system is abused for emotional purposes while the reputation itself doesn't seem to have a logical place in concluding of something is logical or not, so instead I propose a new type of reputation system: Instead of having "I like how you talk, therefore you are logical and a good scientist" and "I don't like how you talk, therefore you are illogical and are a bad scientist" and all sorts of other non scientific uses r illogical fallacies, we simply have a button for each post that you can press that says "This post answers your current in…

Some answers to frequently asked questions (or paraphrases of questions) that have come up in moderation efforts or in the Support forum. This will be amended as needed. 1. Someperson is wrong! Why don't the moderators step in and do something? We don't do that. The role of the staff (when acting as staff) is to enforce the rules, so we don't make determinations on who is correct. We do, however, participate in discussions as members of the site, and may weigh in in that capacity, but generally do not mix the roles of enforcing moderation and participation in a discussion. (Some "housekeeping" actions, such as moving posts to a more appropriate area, can sti…

  10. If you have the last reply in a thread, and you post again, the system merges your new post to the previous one. Unfortunately any delay in the system during that time can cause the user to wonder if the system has recognized their input, and during this time they may click on the Post button again. An example of this may be seen in the 3rd and 4th quote-and-reply sections of this post. I've played around with this a bit and found that it's very easy to reproduce the behavior. It's perfectly understandable because the system doesn't give you a lot of feedback that it's processing your request, and we're a pretty board so it does fall behind from time to time. Be…

Food and nutrition threads seem to be quite popular, but they bridge a number of our standard fora, and hence get scattered across Chemistry, Biology, Other, and the Lounge. Could we consider a dedicated forum? It would certainly help search and locate old non-highlighted threads, and provide a convenient parking space for off-topic excursions. In my schooldays, it was called 'Domestic Science' though I appreciate that terminology might not be everyone's cup of ginseng tea.

  13. I'm curious as to what might be the motive for today's attempt to flood the forum with spam. We've had these in the past from time to time. It can't be to advertise a service or a scam, because of the random subject matter. Can this be an individual with a grudge against the forum, or something like that? Seems pretty pointless and ineffective.

Is there any way to change one’s display name on this forum? Maybe I’m blind, but I wasn’t able to find such a setting anywhere.

  15. It may be me; as I often goof... where did I this time ? The order of posts at ---> https://scienceforums.net/forum/25-computer-science/?&sortby=forums_topics.last_post&sortdirection=desc are not sequential. Also, at this same subforum ---> https://scienceforums.net/forum/25-computer-science/?sortby=start_date&sortdirection=desc same disarray ☹️ ¿?

To whom it may concern, please look into both these quations. I was asked by another member how to change their avatar. As I have never done this, I looked through the settings and other facilities available by clicking on studiot at the top right of the home page. However I could not find the option in 'edit profile' or any of the other options. I did note though that members profiles still contain the option for a Skype address. But of course Skype no longer exists so can I suggest that option be updated ?

Somebody joined the forum in 2018. Their last activity was 2018. Though they've only made two posts they downvote every post I make. Small minded science people are so predictable and stupid. Who's sock is somebody? This is for @Somebody

Does anyone have problems with the quote function? I can quote an entire post using the button underneath, but when I select just a snippet out of the post, I no longer get the option of just quoting that snippet…?

  19. I find the [...] button at top right doesn't work this morning, so I can't edit my posts. Is the problem my end or it is the website?

  20. Started by Eise,

Hi administrators, For 3 days I could not reach these forums. As I see no postings telling us what happened, must I assume it was not a problem at science forums itself? I could not connect from my work, and neither from my home. The error suggested that the URL could not be resolved. Was this a local problem? Swiss? European? Or was it really some problem with the URL registration? I was already desparately trying to find somebody I could contact to find out what was going wrong (WHOIS, trying to find out the email address of one of the moderators). SF is one of my daily mental vitamins. Glad to see y'all back again! Eise PS My, lucky enough ver…

The old forum software used to send Email notifications to my phone when someone on SFn had sent me a PM. The new software doesn't seem to do this anymore. Is that feature not supported, or can it somehow, be turned on in the settings ?

The following was posted in the forum announcements AI-generated content must be clearly marked. Failing to do so will be considered to be plagiarism and posting in bad faith. IOW, you can’t use a chatbot to generate content that we expect a human to have made Since LLMs do not generally check for veracity, AI content can only be discussed in Speculations. It can’t be used to support an argument in discussions. Owing to the propensity for AI to fabricate citations, we strongly encourage links to citations be included as a best practice. Mods and experts might demand these if there are questions about their legitimacy. A fabricated citation is bad-fa…

Is this happening to anyone else? I frequently have to wait about a minute to get to this site(to check that I am human) But just recently there is an additional barrier and it is this "invisionsetup" that has seemingly "blocked me" I immediately refresh the page and the page then changes to the "veryifying that you are human" page which opens up to scienceforums dot net after a short time
