If we had a clear ethical boundary: not to destroy the life of another creature that feels, for food, this would be out of the question. But here, in modern ethics, everything is based on the ephemeral assumption that human life is more valuable than the life of an animal. It is a stone's throw from such a postulate to cannibalism, if it is recognized that the lives of some people are more valuable than the lives of others. Moreover, the statement about the a priori higher value of a person's life is not substantiated by anything. On the contrary, from the point of view of traditional morality, man is mired in sin, and animals are cleaner, at least herbivores Thi…

In it's 2016 report on problems with reproducibility, 70% of scientists surveyed by the journal, Nature (https://www.nature.com/news/1-500-scientists-lift-the-lid-on-reproducibility-1.19970), cited "selective reporting" as a significant problem, while about 40% cited "fraud". My definition of "selective reporting" is as it's given here: “when results from scientific research are deliberately not fully or accurately reported in order to suppress negative or undesirable findings” (https://authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/an-introduction-to-research-integrity-and-selective-reporting-bias/#:~:text=Selective reporting bias is when, suppress negative or undesirable findings.…

Actually, Neil, there are 5 kinds of truth. The forth being an unreliable source, i.e. a non-proven expert or "pseudoscientists", whom is offering a low-potential truth and a proven source who has demonstrated a superior grasp of overall physics and mathematics compared to others with the same education and resources. In other words, a quick learner. Recently this prodigy has, without aid, hit some geometric bullseyes and now has hit 4 physics mysteries with one "potential" theoretical stone with a possible medical implication that would increase longevity if disclosed. Given his expertise and confidence in the matter compared to how reluctant is to share this new data no…

The industrial revolution resulted in a massive increase of automation, and when combined with the exponential growth of technological progress which has taken place since then it has resulted in many forms of menial labor being made obsolete. Consider the following premise - relative to the past, a greater percentage of the population today is unable to make economically useful contributions to society, since the menial labor which they would have been capable of has been automated. Assuming that the premise is true, then this problem will only get worse. Automation and technological progress will only continue to grow, and that rate of growth is also likely to…

I'd like to start by quoting from this forums Statement of Purpose. I love this Purpose statement, yet I also hate it, because despite there being a Philosophy section here, I like to think that I try hard to discuss philosophy and ethics with the highest degree of integrity and respectability. 'Try' being the operative at least. I am by no means perfect. So it would be nice if the purpose statement of this page extended to mention this of ethics and philosophy, as well as science. For I have a love for Ethics and Philosophy that is just as bright as the one I have for Science. When I look around me, I am valuing everything as a something. We often talk of w…

People have belief system of what is right, or wrong. Which is inherent to them. Even babies will cry, if they need attention, when people are fighting, or are frustrated etc. But that's a basic emotion. When we are angry, that's because someone is damaging our interest, so we get angry at someone who wronged us. There are 2 basic emotions: pleasure, or pain. All emotions can be put to one, or another of these categories. Emotions are universal in any demographic. Yet moral standards will differ from country to country, from group to group, from person to person. To be honest even emotions aren't universal to some event: for one person something can be pleasure, for …

Most people aren't experts in any particular thing, and if they are then their competence is limited to a specific area. Yet we have a need to make decisions related to many subjects we do not fully understand, and in those cases we often rely upon authoritative people and organizations to guide us in that process. But how can we decide who we should trust? Governments have been malevolent and dishonest in the past, and scientists have gotten things tragically wrong. How should we as laymen decide where to place our faith? Because that's what trusting an authority ultimately is, faith.

My claim; All bads are wrongs. Not all wrongs are bads. A 5 year old claims; 12+50=71 Wrong, but bad? Clearly mixed up the tens and units column in 12. 5 year old child hits his sister. Wrong, but bad? I have attached a simple logic puzzle, image in attachment. This logic puzzle is a good example of where we are also being asked; How many times do you need to be wrong, before you can be right? Let's add the ethical spin; Let's imagine that each time an incorrect choice is made, a bomb will go off, killing a nearby person standing a safe distance away from the boxes. Now imagine two individuals, they have both …

Many aspects of our society are harmful to stupid people. If you cannot get good grades in school you are unlikely to get the education credentials you need to make a decent living. Even if you manage to get a decent degree you are still faced with the challenge of not coming across as a troglodyte during job interviews, and actually performing well if you are hired. In 21st century Western countries almost all of us have had decent nutrition and ample opportunities to acquire knowledge and cultivate our minds, and therefore most of the variation in how smart we are relative to each other is determined by our innate design which we had no control over. Should we accept th…

I've noticed recently a lot of people describing themselves as utilitarians and I'm always puzzled by this, because there are old objections to utilitarianism and I'm not aware that anyone resolved them. Utilitarianism being the maximum amount of happiness for the maximum amount of people would permit killing an innocent person for the purpose of harvesting their organs and saving 3 dying people. This would increase the amount of happiness in the world. How do utilitarians defend from this?

If you believe that everyday people should be allowed to operate motor vehicles then you are enabling immoral behavior. There were 36,560 motor vehicle deaths in the United States in 2018. There are far safer methods of transportation; including subways, buses, trains, planes, and bicycles. Those methods do not involve allowing common peasants to operate a machine weighing thousands of pounds that can reach speeds of over 100 mph. Older drivers, particularly those aged 75+, have higher crash death rates than middle-aged drivers (aged 35-54). If you are in favor of allowing common folk to operate motor vehicles then I have to ask, are you OK with letting your grandma …

I feel like opening another thread, because this phenomenon bothers me increasingly. Quite a lot of people, if they are not sure about the exact explanation of a topic, they may go to Wikipedia, or if they have more time, sit down and watch an educational youtube video. Most of us will have to admit to doing this, on occasion. The problem is what kind of experience this may bring to you. Mostly I am personally interested in mathematical topics. I can read a Wikipedia page and identify mistakes in maths, and make corrections, so that is fine, it seems. Except when the work required to do so begins to exceed my capacity. I cannot spend every working hour on this p…

What do you think about Eugenics? I personally think it would drastically change the world for the better. By Eugenics I mean sterilizing everyone with an IQ below 100, and forcibly aborting any fetus which will be born with a genetic deformity, retardation, etc. Also encouraging geniuses to procreate by giving them tax breaks and benefits for each child they produce. Can you imagine a world where geniuses are a dime a dozen? Classrooms full of gifted children, no more government funds wasted on special ed classrooms, all this we can achieve. We just have to set aside pointless emotions and see the bigger picture. It might be difficult to accept forc…

I read an article that says they noticed that Chinese peasants dealing with covid seemed to be doing better than their rich counter parts the aparent difference being famotidine. So, now they are going to do a study. Apparently, where they use 9 times the usual dose. https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/27/health/famotidine-coronavirus-northwell-trial/index.html It explains the study to a small degree. Maybe I should not question it in the ethics section? Maybe I should not question it at all. I take meds that help and I take meds that seem to have side effects to the effect that I pick up my tablet then stare at it trying to remember what it was I wanted to do. There a…

LIFTING RESTRICTIONS BETWEEN SCIENTISTS COPYRIGHT Copyright is the exclusive right given to the creator of a creative work to reproduce the work, usually for a limited time. The creative work may be in a literary, artistic, educational, or musical form. Copyright is intended to protect the original expression of an idea in the form of a creative work, but not the idea itself. A copyright is subject to limitations based on public interest considerations, such as the fair use doctrine in the United States. Some jurisdictions require "fixing" copyrighted works in a tangible form. It is often shared among multiple authors, each of whom holds a set …

It seems majority of people on this forum support designer babies. I don't claim I do support it myself, but would be glad to know opinion of other people: if designer babies will ever become a commonplace, should humanity try to erase any difference between males and females and any sexual inequality by means of genetic engineering and modification? Should females become as tall, physically strong, having brains of the same size as males? Should they have the same ability to aggressive self-defense and military jobs? Or even humanity may go so far some day and endow females with ability to impregnate the males, making equality complete in this way? Or perhaps we ne…

What is known about this organization principia-scientific.org ? On the extreme end of being anti scientific, so far as I can see. I wrote a book review on Amazon of a book apparently written by one of the members or affiliates of this organization: www.amazon.de/Mathematik-für-die-ersten-Semester/dp/3110377330/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&sr=1-1#customerReviews My entire mathematics department immediately got attacked by spams from one of the members of PSI, Klaus D. Witzel, and the review itself got angry replies also from John Gabriel, a well-known extreme racist anti-semitic anti-science crackpot, as well as Stephen Crothers himself, who needs no furth…

I don't really see the ethical reason for having a statute of limitations. Especially now that people are living longer lives. To some extent, it could make sense in some cases to prevent miscarriages of justice, when memories of witnesses get more unreliable over time. But today, with modern forensics, it's possible to solve a lot of serious cases without relying on the weakness of human memory. DNA is a prime example, but fibre evidence, ballistics and even photographic evidence have the potential to be reliable evidence way into the future. Plus stuff that hasn't been thought of yet. It's not beyond the wit of a decent judge, to direct a jury so that unrelia…

I’VE HAD A CYBERSTALKER SINCE I WAS 12 Stalkers using bugging devices and spyware to monitor victims The Reality Of Having A Stalker A cyber stalker and hacker has ruined my life for two years and counting. How do you deal with internet hackers turned real life stalkers? I posted links to most prominent cases given with Google search to give a good idea of what methods stalkers might use to torment their victims and outline the seriousness of such behaviour. So, say you met someone on a message board or perhaps you didn't converse with them but they saw your posts. Now, they have a personal photo on their avatar supposedly…
