Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Here is some interesting bible quotes I thought I would share with everyone Lets begin with the first three words in the Bible. In the beginning Funny how these writers knew the universe was finite around two and a half to three thousand years before modern cosmologist came to that conclusion. It is almost like it was inspired. Here is another interesting one Job 26:77 He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing. Predicting that the earth floats in what we now know as space. Something very out of ordinary for people of those ancient times to think. Here is a quote that many think eludes to the exp…

http://www.scribd.co...-Creation-Event Lets call this a public service announcement to all the atheist on this board. It seems that Alexander Vilenkin has showed again why a eternal universe is improbable. Their was off course a very well known Christian who also believed the universe had a beginning. His name was Thomas Aquinas. He was one of Christianity greatest philosophers. Among some of his feats was the formulation of a argument for the existence of God. Lets review his argument for a bit. Premises 1) Whatever comes into existence has to have a cause. 2) The universe came into being. 3) Therefore the universe has to have a cause. We cannot invoke…

This is a simple question to believers; Why does anyone in this day and age believe in a collection of 2000 year old stories which make claims to the extraordinary without a shred of verifiable evidence?Oh of course some would make the claim that many individuals who are named inthe bible, many cities and even some events did in fact exist. However it would be no different than if I were to write a story about Bill Clinton riding a flying unicorn and saving the world from evil with his magical powers... simply because Bill Clinton existed does not make it true in any way shape or form. The Bible is a story full of contradictions, atrocities, incest, murder and…

Why does the scientific community still continue to deny the Ancient Alien hypothesis? Are we to still asume that our ancient ancestors simply had an over active imagination? This is seriously not good enough. If we continue to think this way, we go into the future with a blindfold, this idea of the world - a mechanistic world view must change as we approach the end of the Kali Yuga. It seems ridiculous that the majority still hold the narrow view, considering what we now know and understand, to even claim that we couldn't possibly have had celestial interventions throughout our history and we must have then developed in more or less liner progression will soon be…

Three world religions exist: • Buddhism, • Christianity, • Islam. Mechanism of religious control was built in each of the world religions. Religious control consist in that priest compels by believers to observe the religious norms of behavior under threat to send to paradise or hell. As it considered in the Middle Ages, keys from sky are in pocket of Rome's pontiff. I am atheist, I don't believe to paradise and hell and if I will destined to be in hell, I hope to meet the most clever and merry group of friends in hell. I consider that it is necessary to believe not in God but only in itself and in own forces, therefore i the religion is considered …

Bible law exceeds God’s “Eye for an Eye” law. From this fact, it follows that human institutions have placed themselves higher than God, in terms of what laws they will follow. This includes religious hierarchies. They all break the first commandment. All believers also break the first commandment if following secular law over God‘s. There are ample examples in scriptures where the basic law of an eye for an eye is promoted. IOW, the penalty should suit the sin. A graduated scale of fault. A do onto others and brotherly love type of fiduciary thinking. Reciprocity is fair play type of thinking. Lev 24;20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth:…

When looking at science and more importantly the back bone of science, the scientist, one should not be too quick to disregard religion as having no part. For which scientist has proven all scientific knowledge? What I am saying is that faith is something that is not completely exclusive to religion and that the trust in humans of results and theories which have not personally been verified by oneself is very much the same as a faith in religion.

I wouldn't usually post the video opinion of another to start a thread, but I feel it does make it clear how myself and many others feel when confronting questions such as "You are rejecting faith." Or "You are rejecting God." The video explains how one persons rejection of another's faith is - at least in part - a rejection of their ego. It describes how disagreeing with a person's faith, or assumptions therein, is not necessarily attacking the individual making the claim. In light of some of the topics discussed recently, I feel it prudent to explain why many members of SFN post as they do.

I have found that when explaining creation among atheist beliefs, it's a lot harder to prove your points, because your trying to prove something. Meanwhile atheist belief is arguing to prove nothing. -That we all came to existence by the natural phenomenon of all physical things. So basically it's a lot harder to prove/argue something than to prove/argue nothing. This sometimes annoys me but I just need to explain it better probably(any tips?) Anybody in the same boat??

I am a believer in god. And a believer in science. I have found that i can (to a certain degree) manipulate bodily heat throughout my body. I have measured and have been able to increase the temperature of my hands by 6 degrees, according to my thermometer. However during my last several trips to a new church i have found that every time i get a feeling on my right shoulder. I would describe it as if someone smeared icy hot onto my skin. Strangely enough i am able to move the tingle throughout many of the parts of my body. Any comments on energy manipulation and your opinions on my dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

A question for atheists. In a world where there's no proof of God's existence or of life after death; how will you explain to your children why you brought them into the world and why they should die?

Impossible. It is impossible that there even was a big bang. If there was a big bang, how did the complex life become? How did the molecules even stick together? See That is Case for a Creator, and all of those videos show how there could not be any big bang.

As an atheist I have a question, if I lead a “perfect” life according to the bible but refuse to believe in God would I go to heaven or hell?

It is possible that every religious person that ever lived, or ever will live, can tell you that their God is perfect in every way. Can we discuss just what 'Perfect' means, and if it's even possible for any intelligent entity to live in a state of perfection? What makes this even more difficult is that the catholic bible informs us that God made man in his own image. So, how does a perfect being exist perfectly within a humanoid form?

The physical sciences so contend that we humans are but skeleton, muscle, tendon, blood, internal organ, sense receptor, and nervous system: that being humans are essentially defined by the physical parts constituting them. If we so had a different array of constitution { say different nervous system } humans would not be human as we define them. That being then→ to ultimately understand humans we must then understand the physical physiological systems that as such comprise them. No system comprising humans can so be deleted. That includes the functioning of the brain and the nervous system. Thoughts and memories can't be literally screened, measured, nor dissected. They …

Is it myth that most folks bring their childen up to do the right thing, or is this idea just some more BS? The video is a tear jerker, but only if you try using it as a crutch. There are several viewpoints the boy may have offered under different circumstances. Especially after spending a summers vacation on the farm. I wonder at his reply had the old man sent him there to bust ass and work it as a full time job?

I always liked Paul Harvey and his delivery, but had no idea of where he was going next with his rhetorical BS. This audio was made 3 or 4 years before his passing, but has a ring of truth to it regardless of your convictions.

I notice a falling away of people from their faiths. And I wonder. What would be the "perks" for becoming Atheist? With faith one has hope in prayer to help them through difficult times. Faith brings comfort. Comfort that a higher existence is looking out for that one. Faith allows one to face death without any fear. "Each person views their own death in their own way."[sic]→ Niche← With faith it's not "lights out" it is not an end but a new beginning; whether true or not, the assurance that death is just a transition, not a deletion of oneself has a pacifying effect upon the truly faithful facing death. It seems to me the faithful are enhanced through their…

I get it now. I understand. Why should I hide my talents; others don't. Anyone who thinks they're important is usually just a pompous moron who can't deal with his or her own pathetic insignificance and the fact that what they do is meaningless and inconsequential. William Thomas At risk of sounding foully pompous I think that writers' groups are probably very useful at the beginning of a writing career. Bernard Cornwell I'm not ashamed I graduated from a high school for the gifted at 15 1/2 years old. Why waste time learning such easy stuff. And hey, Someone's got to graduate #1 in their class, why shouldn't that one be me? Dr. Ushie Mayn…

There has been something that has been bothering me for an hour or so now. The bible says that god is all powerful, but when I ask Christians why god doesn't do anything to help the people in suffering they say its because it was humanity choice and act of free will that led them into it. If god is all powerful than why doesn't he help these people, It doesn't matter whether they did it to themselves, if he is truly great he should forgive them and help them. Can someone clear this up for me? EDIT: I am an Atheist.

Why do so many atheists believe in the existence of extra-terrestrial life despite the fact that it's not scientifically proven? They are not ready to accept in the existence of some form of a god however they are willing to believe and have faith that aliens exist? Could anything be any more ridiculous?
